USPS ever lost your knife during shipping ? I'm going through it right now

No problem at all.
I would bet 8 out of 10 shipping complaints I handle are due to SHIPPER error. Either a bad house number or the wrong zip code. Be careful when addressing packages and always insure for the replacement value.

My hatchet loss was due to seller stupidity.

A few of my "delayed delivery" packages have been due to the seller/shipper goofing it with bunged up addresses. Had one where the shipper had everything right in the address but the zip code. They put the zip for a little town outside Corpus Christi. I watched the package bounce back ad forth between Austin/San Antonio/Corpus Christi several times. Corpus would ship it back to Austin via San Antonio because of the town on the address and Austin would ship it back to Corpus via San Antonio based on the zip code. I finally went to the Cedar Park PO and told the postmaster about it and he put something called a "touch" on it that would force the system to kick it out for manual intervention. Got it a couple of days later.

As I have had 3000+ packages flow through the the Cedar Park PO over the last few years, everyone there seems to know me, at least by PO box number :D I've had a couple of packages where the shipper really screwed up packaging and something would come out and bounce around in the bottom of the big canvas rolling carts.

I had one knife that was supposed include the WW2 dog tags of the original owner. The box had not been sealed properly and the dog tags were missing. I asked the postmaster if they had found any old dog tags. Sure enough, when they searched the rolling carts, they found the dog tags down in the corner of the canvas.

Had another package where the knife had fallen out of its box (again bad packaging). Teh PO folks weren't absolutely positive that the knife in the cart belonged in the box with my name on it, but they were pretty sure it did. They put the empty box in a parcel locker with a note to see the postmaster. When I checked with him, he asked if I could identify what should have been in the box. I pulled up my tracking list of outstanding packages and compared the return address city on the box to my list of shippers' hoe towns. I pulled up the ebay auction on my phone, showed it to the postmaster and said "It should be a knife that looks like this" and told him the ricasso stamp that should be on it. He went back to his office and came back with the knife, compared it to the picture and said "Yep, this is probably yours. Tell the shipper to get a clue on packaging."

why were they not insured for more ?? who is to blame ??

This was before I asked for full insurance and the seller did not include it; I basically chalked it up as a loss and a learning experience. Still doesn't make up for the fact they were stolen/lost in the same month from the same facility though :/

8 day is nothing, especially free shipping. what's the big deal? if you wanted it sooner other shipping options were available. expect longer for ups for more money, and the best part is they'll use usps to deliver it anyways.

I have now had well over 100 knives shipped to me from the US....along with all and sundry other packages. I have never lost a knife, had a few languish in Customs bout here and in the US for a bit, and a couple that have taken some time to clear various USPS hubs, but all have arrived.

Luckily, the town I live at now is so small, and I know the PO folks. If a package had just a zip code and my last name, I'd probably get it :D

Bought a super cqc8 few years ago knife showed delivered and no knife in box . After calling several times they said the knife had been delivered and I was SOL basically.

Just so happens I have honest neighbors and they brought me my package .

Another time had bought my kid a dress online had a fill in mail carrier and she brought a few packages to the door but no dress .

I checked the tracking and it showed delivery with the other packages. Called usps and they did some digging and the dress was delivered a few minutes AFTER the other packages letting the bosses know the driver took it to the wrong house . They did a 3 way call with myself and the driver and the driver denied this even with a boss saying the dress was delivered to another block 10 minutes after she left my house . That was on a Saturday on that Monday my kids dress was in a box at the end of the driveway.

Ordered a custom machined safety razor from Canada dew months back . 3 weeks after getting a tracking number my package showed it went into a NY post office but never left . I called the postmaster and gave them the tracking number . They tracked it to the post office and called them . They swore up and down the package had left their facility .

I contacted the maker to start his insurance claim on this razor because it looked to be lost at this point . He went through the motions of getting his money and a few days later I get a call from the post master , my package had been found "on the floor at the post office buried under some old boxes" They sent it out and I got it about 3 days later.

I do a lot of shopping online I list the hiccups I've had ,but let me say this out of the countless good transactions I've had I have had a few bad ones . Considering the good ones I'd say the usps does a pretty good job .

Ups has lost my stuff before ,actually more than usps . I'm friends with the ups driver and him being a ups employee he has his problems it's not just us common folk.

His wife has some disease and gets her meds by mail each month . The ups driver told me that about every other month his wife's script shows delivered and turns out its a few states over ...

So none of them are perfect but they aren't bad IMHO.

Incoming I've had a couple that "took the scenic route", but all finally arrived. Wish I could say the same for the ones shipped UPS and FEDEX. Outgoing I've only lost one, but that one made it to the destination country before disappearing in their postal system. Also had a couple bounce around. The slow ones, coming and going, could almost all be traced to incorrect zip codes, either because the postal worker who accepted the package keyed it in incorrectly and the package went to the PO serving that zip first or, more rarely, because the sender got the zip wrong.

I bought a lnib BM 630 from a guy on the Jerzee Devils(sp) forum about 6 years ago. I insured the knife. My mail lady handed me the small box, it was Empty.
A USPS employee got a really nice knife. I contacted the seller and got my refund in 3 days. Ever since that happened, I always insure knives I buy, or trade on BF.

I sold a Spyderco Barong, like an idoit, to a guy on BF. He didn't want to pay for insurance so I paid for insurance. The priority box with the knife in it was stolen
from his porch. He contacted me for the insurance # and got his $ back form USPS.

Insurance looks like the way to go. Especially for peace of mind.

What about when ordering a knife online from a dealer? Is that automatically insured ? If not then can it be insured ?

Sometimes I am amazed that I get stuff shipped by morons. They tape a box close with one little piece of Scotch tape or tape the shipping label on with two little pieces of tape. I have not lost one thing in the mail. Zero, none. I have received thing shipped UPS that were severely damaged. We had two shotguns temporarily lost because UPS ripped the end off the box. The guns were damaged, but we got them back. After that, we learned to use a lot of tape. 25¢ worth of shipping tape versus an expensive knife or gun? You decide.

^ Signature confirmation, is also another excellent option to add when shipping a package. This guarantee's, that someone will sign for the package. If I had to choose between purchasing signature confirmation, or insurance, I choose shipping my packages out with signature confirmation, along with the USPS insurance that that comes with USPS priority shipping boxes. Hundred's of transactions later; still batting a thousand with USPS! :)

^^^ How about no tape, or better yet, envelopes!?!? There are some really stupid/lazy people, in this World!

This^^^^^ Also one time i sent a drive to Kingston for warranty. I dropped it in a blue box and it got stuck inside. I called and told USPS about it numerous times and I checked it daily. One day it was finally clear so i assumed my package was on its way. No luck. tracking showed nothing. I called, complained visited, etc. no love. 6 Weeks after i should have received it my drive arrived from Kingston. Tracking never updated. I have my theories, but in the end it worked out.

Just happened to me...and the second time in 5 months. pissed at the USPS.

I live in a small community where the mail is delivered to a community postal box station, that also has parcel boxes.\got a notice from tracking that my knife got delivered to my postal box Sat. afternoon. When I checked this sunday it was not there, also all the parcel boxes were empty.
I went to the post office and the lady looks over the tracking info and actually tells me three times, " looks like we delivered it to your box." I asked to see the postmaster but she was on the phone. Apparently tho there was a substitute driver that saturday. Will be back tomorrow.

They told me 5 months ago, on a xmas gift that was never "delivered" , "you will have to trust that the neighbor that it got delivered to is honest." It was a small item, and the dealer told me that they couldn't do anything cause it has it recorded on tracking as delivered, additionally it was not their fault.

I will be making a formal complaint this time and also discuss with the PD my options...which aren't probably many.

Delivery by signature confirmation from now on...
