USPS Pricing Up Again

go figure. so the government keeps the dollar weak on purpose and then prices go up. go figure. but hey things are looking up for 2011

This is the way it works: The Fed prints hundreds of billions of new dollars. The oil producing countries demand more of the (now less valuable) dollars in exchange for their valuable oil. Gasoline prices go up at the pump. Each 1 cent increase in the price of gas costs the postal service around $8 million a year, so USPS is forced to raise its prices.

Nothing happens in a vacuum!

I just sent (3) knives to Hawaii, USPS Express mail for less than $20. My outside insurance will even cover them to $15,000, they are that confident.

Still a great deal. BTW, they lost a boatload of money last year. I can see why. They aren't charging enough.

(SHHHHHHHHH!!!!)

Coop

Actually, USPS only lost around $1.5 billion last year from postal operations. They have actually turned a profit over the past 4 years since they were reorganized under the Postal Enhancement and Accountability Act (PAEA).They had to make around $7.5 billion in prepayments to accounts that will fund pensions and retiree health benefits around 40 years in the future. Congress requires USPS to make these payments under the PAEA because they want cash now so they can understate the amount of the deficit.

I meant the price for packages, not for normal envelopes (stamps, letters)

Yeah, the prices for most packages got bumped up. The letter prices will probably go up sometime later this year.

Here's a really cool new feature of the Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes: There is now a new version of them called Hold For Pickup. We all know the horror stories about packages being stolen from mailboxes or off porches before the recipient gets home fom work. Now a notice will be left and the Hold For Pickup Flat Rate Box will be held at the post office until called for. Best part is it doesn't cost any extra!
