USPS told me shipping a knife is prohibited???

Secure packaging is what makes the difference between a knife being considered dangerous in the mail or not. I ran into this issue before and had to be VERY persistant, patient, and polite with the postmaster (say that three times fast!) and she ended up having to call a higher authority to clarify the matter. She called me later that day to confirm that I had been correct and that knives are mailable both domestically and internationally but must be sufficiently packaged to prevent risk of injury to carriers.

How did she/they know what was in the package??

I have filed an insurance claim for a knife I shipped that evidently got caught in some kind of sorting machine. The buyer received the knife but the box and knife were a mess. They paid with no questions asked.
Unless the knife was shipped from or to a prohibited location he is overstepping his authority. If the sender insured the knife tell him to file a claim.

Thanks for all the input. I hope it turns up.

It sounds like the shipper owes you a Kukri! That is the real issue for you my friend, the fact that you got robbed by the PO sucks, but its not your fault that the packaging was lousy.
A kukri can generate some energy sliding in a box, and the tip of most sheaths on these is pretty sharp, that would go through a box in short order.
All knives need to be kept stationary in the box or package they are shipped in...if nothing rattles, maybe the scummy postal worker won't take notice of your goods.

I have found this saves a lot of grief. Place an (empty) No. 303 steel food can over the sharp end of the typical khukuri scabbard and taping it in place carefully. Make sure the khukl is secure in the scabbard. THEN package well in a stout box with with stuffing to hold the "canned" scabbard in place so it can't slop around inside the box.

I have received two khuks with the point sticking out of the box. I appreciated the fact that USPS delivered them.

(I have lost one knife - a little puukko that a clown mailed from Finland in, I swear to you, a typical Christmas Card envelope with no tape.)

I know this is a late reply by 8 years. But fuck USPS. Ship UPS and save yourself a headache.
