Went to Vermont for a little "vacation". I drove 869 miles the first day to Syracuse. Was going to drive to Troy, N.Y., but my father in law had enough. No biggie. Drove the other 430 miles the next day to get there.

So when we get there, we have to open the place up. It hasn't been used for a year, so the water, etc., has to be turned on, cleaning to do, etc. Primed the pump for lake water use, and it fired right up. Heard something, and there were some pvc fittings that were broken, and had to be replaced. Tried fixing the leaks with what we had, to no avail. We had minimal tools, so had to wait until the next day to go to the hardware store. I replaced the fittings, and turned the pump back on. There's two bathrooms, upstairs and down, and both toilets were cracked, and leaked water all over the place. So, I replaced both toilets. Heating element was out of the water heater, so that was replaced twice, the first being a lemon. The water pump for the well water had a busted flange. Turns out, the guy that did some work for Pop didn't winterize the place as he said he did. He didn't drain the water, open the valves, put anti-freeze in the toilets, etc., so everything busted. Then, the water pump stopped working. We looked for hours trying to figure it out. Checked the switch in the box, it was good. Ran an extension cord to the pump, and it worked fine, so wasn't getting any juice. Turns out that Pop forgot about a switch he made upstairs, to turn the pump off, without having to go to the basement. Wife was cleaning, and turned the switch off.

We left with my step son (19) having a fever. Thought he was over it, as he was feeling better. Get a call from the step daughter, saying the son went to Prompt Care. They told him he had to have his gall bladder removed. WTF??? 19, gall bladder removed??? We were going to take my wife to the airport so she could fly back, but before we did, we got a call, and he went for a second opinion, and turns out he has mono.

But, with all that going on, we still managed to have a little bit of fun. What the hell, we're in the beautiful state of Vermont, just a few miles from the Canadian border. Wife and I went for a couple hundred mile ride, and took some photos.

Pop's summer get away. He's had this place for over 50 years:

Found a trail, and walked back a bit:

Went to Stowe, VT. This is Maria Von Trapp, of The Sound Of Music fames, lodge. Apparently after she fled the Nazis, she settled here, as it reminded her of her home in the Alps:

Did a small hike to these falls. Crappy photos though:

On the road in Smuggler's Notch. The road was twisting and winding, and sometimes one lane:

Got out and walked a bit, for some photos:

As you can see, it wasn't all bad, and I'm ready to go back. Hell, we want to live there. Thanks for looking.

Damn Dubz. That's incredibly beautiful. Thanks for posting. Sorry about the crap you had to go through, but my goodness that's just pretty.

Great photos, thanks for sharing. It there wasn't a 2700 mile drive involved, I could see myself vacationing there too. :)

You know, sucked while it was happening, but great when it was over. Hard to be upset in a place like that. Incredible area. My Father in law wants my wife and I to have the place there, but there's no way we can afford it.

Thanks. We're road dogs. We love to travel.

BTW, here's a brief history I just found about Smuggler's Notch:

Welcome to Smugglers’ Notch State Park. The famous Smugglers’ Notch is a narrow pass through the Green Mountains. Lined with 1,000-foot cliffs, the winding road is closed in winter. In the earlier days, only a footpath and trail for horses existed here.

In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson passed an embargo act forbidding American trade with Great Britain and Canada. This was a severe hardship for northern Vermonters, since Montreal was closer than other markets in the US. Many local people continued illegal trade with Canada, herding cattle and carrying other goods through the Notch. Later, fugitive slaves used the Notch as an escape route to Canada. During the Prohibition years, liquor was smuggled from Canada over the improved road built in 1922.

Thanks guys, appreciate it. Father in law was talking about going back in Sept.

I can't believe it! First picture I've EVER seen from you that is over-processed!

The pictures are all pretty damn impressive though! It's a gorgeous place man!

Your pics and our weather almost make me wish I weren't in Texas right now. :D

I really need some dirt time!!!

If you're talking about the lodge photos, it wasn't over processing. It was a wrong setting on my camera. It was set to the setting I use for my light box, hence the blue tint. If you're talking about the last waterfall shot at Lake Willoughby, you're right, it is, haha. Knew it before I posted it. Thanks for noticing. ;)

The weather was beautiful. Had to have a jacket at times, my kind of weather.

Beautiful area Warrior. i know...i live there. ;) :D

That "notch road" is truly awesome...and pretty gnarly too. I grew up in Mass but have been up here for almost 16 yrs. It took a bit to get used to, but now i am the bumper sticker....i.e. i LUVERMONT. but, you know what? i've never been to Lake Willoughby, and after looking at your pics, i must remedy that.

if you come back in Septemer, hit me up (if you want). i can get you a couple places to go or meet up for a pint or both.

thanks for all the great pics.

Lake Willoughby is a must. What part of VT do you live in?

It's just nice to know that the Great Dubz is fallible! It was the waterfall shot. But at least I was honest not just blowing smoke eh!

Thanks for posting the great pics - I've traveled thru some of those parts but its been a long time. Sorry about all the broken plumbing, happened across the street from me after the owner passed - cracked some cast iron radiators that weren't fully drained.
I know what you mean about wanting to live there - I feel the same way when I get to drive through the Whites here in NH. Lucky for me, I already live in a real pretty place and I can be hiking in the mountains in as little as an hour, and Mount Washington is only 2 hours away.
You are lucky to be able to call your Pop's place home, even if only for vacation now and then.

Wow, didn't know I was thought of as perfect, haha. :D BTW, this is the original. Not as over processed as you might think:

This is the 4th time I've been there, love it. NH is awesome too. Wife and i drove through Franconia Notch State Park, and did a hike at "The Basin". Absolutely breath taking area. I didn't get to see the old man of the mountain though. It was after it fell off the side of the mountain. I've actually been through there twice, on the way to Kittery Maine.
