Vest pocket carry ?

Well I got the Jimmy Hourihan and while it says it's a small, it's like a smock on me o_O
It's very nice, but it's also on the thin side and just really not the kind of vest I had in mind.

Right now I'm really interested in the filson, but I'm not sure I'll like the pocket setup and don't quite need that many extra pockets.

I've actually been quite liking that first vest I bought in overall form and it actually hasn't been too warm for all day wear, but it's still not great to wear under a jacket so I do need another vest.

I'll have to think it over.

Looking into it I really like the filson Mackinaw and was going to get one, but they don't offer quite the right size for me and I'm not comfortable paying that money for something that's not quite the fit I'm after.

I went looking and discovered an Idaho manufacturer named C&C Sutlery who produces what is essentially a copy of the filson Mackinaw, which they call a modern challis vest and they're flexible in their sizing because they're made to order.
They only use a 21oz wool vs the 24oz filson uses, but I think I will still be happy with the thickness.

I don't 100% love the idea of getting a copy, but it's really the only model they offer and they make my size which filson does not.

I just remembered that, in my teens, I had a Levi's denim waistcoat/vest. Took a while to find an online image

Well I just ordered the C&C sutlery Challis vest, sadly they're made to order so it's going to take 8-12 weeks :(
Oh well I suppose it's worth the wait for a better fit :)

I'm assuming it's not going to be the most premium of wool and it's probably imported wool on top of it only being a 21oz, there's just no way otherwise that I would be getting a vest made to order in the USA for under $90 shipped.

I suppose I can be the Guinea pig and report on it when it gets here.

Here's a different take on "Vest Pocket Carry"

A WWII pilot's survival vest with two examples of what might have been securely stowed away in the pocket designated for such a knife. Definitely not a fashion statement! T-A

Very cool.
I've seen the life raft kits and such with these colonials in them, but I'm not sure whether or not I was aware of the vest or not.

Just been checking those Filson vests on the Bay, SECOND-HAND they fetch over 100 Euro plus a huge shipping tag plus import tax  I wouldn't pay that money for something somebody else has been sweating in...:D

the-accumulator the-accumulator That's a very decent outfit, lot of room for knives and all manner of stuff too. Just don't fall in the water in one

I just found one for just under $50, but being a filson it wouldn't really fit me and I wasn't huge on the color anyways.

The thing I've been loving most is that even while sitting down I can easily retrieve my knife or flashlight from my pocket.

Damn thats cheap!! Looking forward to hearing how it turns out!

Here's a couple of mine, with multiple pockets (the lower one - Keela Heritage Waistcoat - has a dozen).

I've had this one (also with 12 pockets) nearly 30 years, and worn it a lot, made by an Australian company who don't seem to be around anymore. There are two HUGE pockets, which take up the entire front of the vest, I can carry an axe or a large camp knife there, comfortably and discreetly. All 3 of these vests have large poacher's pockets at the rear, but they see very little use

That's a good looking vest. :cool::thumbsup:

Thanks John, it's French, but it's actually a bit large for me, and while I still like it, I should really have swapped it for a smaller size

Vestaranza! Our branding last weekend. Daughter had her Carhart on as did the wife and good friend Cara:

Because the pockets aren't good on a Carhart for holding items like a knife, the wife went with boot carry while branding:

The guys for the most part went with the soft shell vests:

These vests always have zippered pockets ideal for stashing a folder. But fixed blades on the belt still are the majority around here:
