many thanks once again folks... we had a great time.. i am definately into doing it again soon..

Mike

I know I still am! and Mike Vagnino was too when I saw him tonight! I think the WS&S crowd was very well represented and I would be happy to do it again...might be a good excuse to "collect" another grinder, so we would have two grinders to go with the two forges and anvils! Lord knows I need another reason to buy more tools! :p

I had a blast, really. Lovely time.

I am working on a no weld grinder... and I've been toying with remounting the Coote I have on a work stand that would be portable. Really easy, I just have to cut one slot in the top of an old tool stand I have to mount the (110V!!) baldor motor underneath.

Great pictures Mike!

Mark, if you ever do another one of these, I will surely be there, especially if Mr. Vagnino does a demonstration for us. Thanks again for opening your shop, it was too much fun.

Me too. I can't wait for the next one. Hopefully we'll meet up again soon at the bushbash in Sequoia or archery in Los Olivos.

What is the small forge? Is there a link to making it? I would like to make a forge but I don't need one like the large one in your pictures. Thanks

It is a soft firebrick. Drill out the center all the way through, long ways. then drill a hole roughly center, to a little forward of center of the brick and as high as the bottom of the long ways hole. That's it!

The brick is real soft and easy to drill or dig out. I'd use an old spade bit, or you can even use a butter knife, I've done that.

The rest of it is just a stand to hold the brick and the propane torch, but you can accomplish that in a number of ways.

It's basically the one brick forge from Wayne Goddard's $50 knife shop book. I love the way it has been mounted, really kick butt.

righteous.

hammer-ins. nothin' better.

if you have the chance to do one, i highly recommend it.

just some super cool people.

Mike - I really liked that little scandi, too. Nice score!

Now I wonder if Freud would have something to say about the fact that Sierra was swinging a bigger hammer than Christof....just sayin'.

now i need to get to work on a sheath for it..:)

Great pics!

The small forge is based on Goddard's one brick forge. You can contant Wayne Goddard directly for the book, or find it on the web. If you Google the 50$ KnifeShop you can find lots of places to get it. I have forged for years using the one brick forge. It is great for blades up to 6 inches (I have done 12). Firebricks are very fragile so I welded up a steel frame out of some plate steel. The brick will slide in and out with the idea being the frame gives alot of support to the brick so it last longer and the brick is easily replaceable. I welded the frame to some other scrap steel to make a post and the two short 2 x6 complete the base. The propane tank sits on the 2 x 6's to make a counter weight.
