I am in the process of making a bunch of knives to become a knife maker on bladeforums, however, I have a whole bunch of steel lying around and would like to create a passaround/contest of sorts.

Here is how it would work. I will ship a 9” x 1.5” x 1/8” piece of 1095 steel to someone who will in turn do something to it (most likely cut out the profile). They will then send in on to another blade forum member who will bevel it then send it on to someone to heat treat then to someone to handle then to someone to make a sheath etc.

There can really be an unlimited number of people in on this as long as people can keep coming up with things to add to it. However, due to the nature of knife making, there must be some sort of sequential order to this so, please post what you want to do. I will leave it at first come, first serve.

Once the knife, sheath, and attachments (firesteels etc) are completed it will be sent back to me and I will create a contest for W&SS members to win it.

Here are the rules. Once you receive the piece, you have 2 weeks to do your modification. You also must take photos of your work along the way. Also please let the person you are sending it to know when you ship it out. Also please note there will not be funding for this, so it will rely on generous donations of parts or material by blade forum members or by the people using their own supply of stuff.

Hope people are interested and let's hear those ideas!

Currently selected parts:

CShepard - Initial knife blank profile
Big Mike - Main bevel
sicily02 - heat treat
PB Wilson - Handle
Talfuchre - Sheath
Richard J - Final edge and sharpening

Now that's what I call "thinking outside the box"

Could be very interesting to follow.

I would love to get in on this. At this time I can profile one nicely. I'm limited on the bevelling to a 1x30 and that takes way too long so I would pass on that. The other thing I can do is handle or make a sheath.

Awesome! So that others can begin choosing things, I would like to have you make the initial knife profile. If you decide you don't want to do this, let me know and we can work something out.

if people in the uk can join in, i'll handle it

Unfortunately, I think we have to limit this to the Continental US. This is only because I don't want to burden someone with international shipping costs, plus extended shipping times.

If this works really well, maybe we can do another internationally.

I'd be interested. I've got a good deal of exotic hardwoods that I'd be willing to turn into handles. Keep me in the loop please.

I could also profile an annealed blank into something resembling a knife.

Cool idea.

Cool! I will put you down for the handle.

I can see it now...1095 nessmuk, with a chisel grind, tactical handles and a kydex sheath with leather strap. Is there going to be some sort of theme to follow? Or will everyone just throw whatever they want on the knife? There's a lot of different preferences out there.

I could do the Q/A.. :D Sounds like everything else is spoken for. About all I could do is a crude sheath and TF has the sheath covered.

We have a lot of experience on these boards as to what makes a good knife and we also have a lot of creativity, so my plan was to let people do whatever they want with it. Hopefully, it will remain in the realm of functionality and usability.

There are other things that need to be done. For example, someone could make a lanyard strap or a firesteel to match the handle material. Also the main bevel grind still needs to be done.

I would consider doing a passaround, but I don't want to drag this out too long as each person has 2 weeks to complete their contribution. Maybe the winner would be nice enough to pass it along to you for some good old fashioned quality assurance. or maybe you could win it ;)

That would be an honor. Anything in particular you looking for? Or is it up to me. I will tell you that I go for function over form and like the classics a lot.
