W&SS knifemaking passaround and giveaway

I'm curious what finish was eventually put on the handle? I merely sanded it with a high grit paper (can't remember offhand), buffed it with a soft rag and it had a nice waxy look to it with no finish at all.

Danish oil if I remember correctly. It was tough to remember - I was throwing things away so fast.

LOL. Yes, I put several coats of "natural" (no dye added) Danish oil on it, let it soak in/dry, and rubbed with 0000 steel wool between coats, until it wouldn't soak up any more. It only took 4-5 "coats" as I recall; I agree that the raw wood itself seems to have a good amount of natural oils. Maple can take many, many "coats" before it's done, in contrast to the wenge.

I'd like to say everyone involved did some good work on this puppy. It's a good handy knife. TF's sheath looks great! It was also the first time I examined one of Richard's edges in person and good gravy, that thing is sharp!! Thank you guys for letting me be a small part of the project.

I'm still in for putting together a firesteel to go with it, if PB sends me a piece of wenge. I have everything else needed.

I agree - that baby was really sharp - and in my opinion it would be a PERFECT small camp knife - or even an awesome kitchen knife (like a small Santuku).

It's on its way, but like a dumbass I forgot to include the brass tubing. James, do you have some laying around?

Yup, no problem. It has a little thicker wall than what you used on the knife but it will work.

Got the knife. It looks great. Nice work everyone!

No kidding. I would like to see more collaborations in the future like this. Thank you for putting it together. I think it is a truly inspired project. So, what's next on the agenda?

As far as this project goes, once I get the firesteel, I will post up some sort of giveaway for the set.

As far as future projects, I know someone had suggested 5 people each make a part on 5 knives. Then each maker gets to keep a knife. That could be an interesting variation. Feel free to start one up on your own.

I was the lucky guy that ended up with this blade, and will be doing my part to review it over the next couple of months, I will post up more as I go.

I won the knife and sheath from my entry into Andrew's Contest, located here:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=772151&highlight=giveaway

It came in the mail today and wow is all I can say what a beauty of a knife and sheath. Kudos to all involved!!

I figured for my first test I would make a bow and drill set to use it along with my winning entry in the contest.

I used the knife to baton down some cottonwood I had collected on my last outing. Then I used the blade to carve the spindle as well as the hearth.

As well as used it to drill the starting hole( well did this 3 times, do to issues with my hole placement!)

After burned in the hole(s) I used the knife to carve the notches (again 3 times!)

I also used the knife to baton down the rest of log for fire prep and to make shavings for the tinder bundle.

Set worked great, as did the knife.

The handle lends itself well for all the tasks I gave it. Very comfortable in the hand. The edge it dull during the batoning, but not too bad as it still did great feather sticks after all this.

After all the firecraft, the knife was dull. By that I mean it wouldn't shave any longer. But, after a quick run on the strop it was back to shaving sharp

I then had to get my practice in for Riley's Owning the Skills thread, and used the knife to carve my figure 4. It did great, made short work of it to!

I then had to make supper, so off to the kitchen to slice up some potatoes. The knife sure made the transition just fine.

While the potatoes and steak were cooking, had to see how well the tip would hold up, so I drilled thru a piece of pine I had in the basement. I must say it did very well. The handle was awesome at this as well the end doesnt dig in at all! And the tip held up very well, stayed very sharp.

This is all I got for now, but I'm going out deer hunting this weekend and if I'm lucky I'll get to try it out processing game!

Be sure to watch for the rest of review of this great blade!

Nice,   ...good to see that knife getting some field time. ;)

And happy to see that Convex Grind working well.
