W&SS knifemaking passaround and giveaway

That would be an honor. Anything in particular you looking for? Or is it up to me. I will tell you that I go for function over form and like the classics a lot.

Charlie

Charlie,

I totally agree that function is the most important aspect of a good knife. You have free reign here, so you can really do whatever you want.

Once I get a few more people in on this, I will begin gathering addresses so we can start the process.

This sound like a cool project.

I would be happy to do the primary grind on the blade.

Sounds great! It looks like we have all the parts we need to make a knife.

I got charlie's address already, but could everyone else please send me their address. I will print them all out and include them in the box. Feel free to send via email or PM. I will get it shipped out sometime this week.

Let the person after you know when you ship it out and remember to post pics. I will start a new thread for pictures.

If anyone is interested in making a firesteel or lanyard or anything like that let me know and I can add you in the list.

A couple of questions.

What type of steel are we using?

Who’s is doing the Heat Treatment?

Thanks, I got your email. Its 1/8" thick 1095 steel.

Ohh your right, I just realized we forgot the heat treat. Anyone interested? I will throw this up in the main post to make sure people see it.

Bryan (sicily02) is going to take care of the heat treating. Well I spoke too soon before, but now it looks like we have everyone we need!

I've got one design sketched out and will probably do another tomorrow to give me some options to mull over.

Big Mike, the one I have sketched so far would work well convexed, flat ground, full flat, or even scandi. That options is up to you.

Let me see what comes on paper tomorrow and I'll probably post a pic of what I've got so far.

I'm really enjoying this prospect.

On a side note, one thing I thought that might be cool if people were interested would be to do something similar with say 6 people and do 6 knives, all identical. Then at the end each would have a knife that they and 5 other makers worked on. Just a thought for a future idea.

Awesome idea! If this works out well, I suggest you try and get that going. I would be happy to help out. I think I will ship out the steel this friday.

If there's anything I can do to help, at any stage except HT (I'm not set up to quench carbon steels) just let me know. I could donate some handle or guard material if you need it. Sounds like a cool project. Is someone taking care of the hand-sanding and/or bluing/patina if needed? Looks like everything else is spoken for.

If PB Wilson has extra handle material would you be interested in making a matching firesteel to go with the knife?

Whatever handle material I choose, I'm certain to have extra. I'd be happy to send a chunk out for a firesteel handle.

Sure! In fact I have some ferro rods on hand, if that would suit y'all. All I'd need is a chunk of handle material and a guideline on how big you want the handle.

PBWilson... pm sent :)

I'll be postings pics of the drawing of the knife hopefully this evening. That way those down the line can see what they want to do with it. Of course the final knife will not look exactly like the drawing depending on what the other makers do with their taskes. I'm very excited to see how this comes out.

I tried to keep it general purpose, able to cut, chop, slice, skin, and whatever you needed to do in the woods with a lean towards general woods skills. I also kept the handle what I call "general" so that it would be comfortable in a variety of grips and in a variety of hands.

When you all see the design I need to know from whoever is doing the handles how you want to attach them. I'll go ahead and put in the lightning holes, pin holes, thong hole or whatever you want.

Charlie

Alright then. Here's my sketch.

I tried to keep it as a design that I would want to carry daily in the woods. One I could turn to for most of the things I find myself needing a knife for.

Drumroll please......................

Hope you all like it.

I know it looks a lot like a lot of other knives out there but in reality there are just certain designs that work better than others.

Charlie

That looks good Charlie.

I look forward to doing my part.
