W&SS knifemaking passaround and giveaway

OK fellas, the firesteel is all assembled/glued up and I'll get her shaped and oil the handles this afternoon. Should get it sent out to Talfuchre Monday, I have another project going out anyway.

I can't say enough about that wenge. I'm picky about wood and this is really nice. Gorgeous, high-contrast grain and it shapes up nice and smooth, with just a touch of openness similar to mahogany or rosewood.

The blade is pretty nice, too! I haven't used it on anything for fear of scratching it up, but the bevel is nice and thin, and the edge RichardJ put on it is just frightening. Nice work, gents!

I'm sorry to say I don't have a camera set up at this time. Maybe I can borrow one this weekend. No promises though.
 
Hey fellas, I got the knife and firesteel all finished and on their way to Talfuchre this afternoon. Thanks for letting me be a small part of this cool project!

Just wanted to check with you and see if you received the knife. You're the last stop before it gets given away. I'm looking forward to seeing the final product.
 
There seems to be some confusion... TF has the knife but the firesteel may have gotten thrown out with the packaging padding by mistake. :( Apparently it's not a good idea to wrap something so small in newspaper and rubber bands, and put it in a box with a larger object... this is my mistake. :o

If need be, I'll make a new one and send it to him so he can build the sheath. Will keep you posted.

I just found this thread, and gentlemen, my hat goes down to you. This project is awesome, specially for us non-makers who can follow the process from start to finish and the rationale behind every step. Can't wait to see what TF comes up with.

James, If you're up for making a new fire steel, I may have a blank lying around (scout size) I can send you if you need one.

Not sure what you mean by "blank"... :confused: I have plenty of tubing and firesteel rods and good-looking wood in the shop, that's not a problem.

In any case, I'll gladly make a new firesteel if the project needs it. Kind of a shame to have something you worked on,
that actually matches the knife's handle, thrown away with the trash, but oh well, stuff happens.

By blank I just meant firesteel rod without any handle. That would be great if you could make another one. Maybe someone has some scraps of wenge lying around they could send you? Otherwise, just pick something you would think would look good.
 
I didn't want to make a stupid firesteel loop anyway!





Dudes - I am so sorry. I honestly did not see it - and the box was trashed before I knew it. I am sorry James - it was not my intention - and I will do whatever it takes (including beating the hell out of TonyM) to make it right.



I am making a pattern for it right now...
