I would like to see how many people actually like or hate Wal Mart selling Spydercos. Lets get a vote and find out.
 
But how many people want to see Spyderco selling Wal-Marts? A Wal-Mart with a pocket clip and one-handed opening would rock!
 
I like it. Its nice to see a knife in person before buying. I'd like to see all Spydies offered at Walmart. :thumbup:

i prefer the local shops to walmart myself, every time i go into walmart the darn knife counter is deserted and no one will help me :grumpy:

I feel the same way. I like to check out the F&F before I buy. Sal can handle Wally World and keep the quality up I think.
 
For a knife user, I think selling Spydies at WalMart would be great. They would really show up all that other 420-steel garbage they are selling now. In time, that may force the other knife companies to upgrade their knives to be competitive, and that would be good for all knife users.

The bad---it may tend to draw people away from the smaller knife shops and on-line dealers and hurt their business significantly. Also, with tens-of-thousands of a particular knife being made, it would hurt the collector market as well. But, I'm sure Sal and the gang would keep it interesting for the collectors by coming out with limited runs of those models.

I like it. It can introduce a new group to high quality knives. Where else can you find an S30V blade for $40? I got a Wal Mart Native for Christmas along with a Delica.
 
I loathe Wal-Mart simply because I loathe the lowest common denominator approach to things. But this might help open up the eyes of many consumers to knives that aren't LCD crap. I'm interested in seeing how this experiment plays out if nothing else.
 
I believe it will become a "cheap" product line when Wal-Mart begins selling them full bore! Can you imagine the quality of their knives when they have to fill an order for 250,000 units? A lot of "corners" are going to be cut to get that order out!

I don't mind right now, but what happens to quality down the road when they need to start cranking out a hundred thousand extra each year. All production suffers when companies hit numbers like that. But damn they are fine right now!
 
I've made about 3 Wal-Mart purchases over the past 15 years. The Spyderco Native brought me to Wal-Mart for a fourth. I think it's fantastic that Wal-Mart can offer a quality, American-made knife and sell it for a terrific price. Even better that Spyderco can take a design that didn't sell well through their usual channels, and give it broad exposure.

I hope that as more users get used to quality knives, the market expands and American knifemakers benefit as a result. Many people I know have just never been exposed to quality knives and don't know any better. I hope Wal-Mart changes that and gives people a taste for better steel, design, and craftsmanship.
 
I voted indifferent, as I have conflicting views on the issue. I'm not very fond of how Wal-Devil dumps mostly cheap Chinese plastic consumer crap into society and the homogenous retail sprawl it seems to bring with it everywhere. :barf:

That said, I do understand Spyderco's reasoning behind their choice and consider it a good thing if it helps open the eyes of non-knife-people to the realm of higher quality tools.
 
But I like the arrangement that Spyderco has with Wal-Mart. By limiting Wal-Mart to the Native, Spyderco is able to introduce the general public to its fine knives while at the same time managing to stay loyal to its established business partners.
 
I'm very neutral on this. There are some things I get there and others that I don't.
