Skunk has been receiving lots of requests for such a knife, so, let's get all Nessmukian here and help design an updated version of the ultimate woodcraft knife. . . .

We don't want drawings as much as we would like to see if there is some consensus on what you guys would like to see in such a knife. . . .

Thickness?. . . . With guard or without guard?. . . Handle material?. . . Blade finish?. . . . etc. . . etc. . . .

Yours in nuclear Nessmukian designs,

Jerry

If you take the ASH-1 and strech it out to a ~10" blade that would work for me.

You can call is an SHBM.

Do I get a free knife?

Thickness?
Slicer. 3/16" at most.

With guard or without guard?
I like a guard, but the handle curve plus the traditional Busse talon hole would be plenty (like the BAIII). I think this is where some woodcraft blades fall a little short. No one needs to be thinking about stitches out in the wilderness.

Handle material?
Micarta! I want it tough enough that I don't have to baby it.

Blade finish?
Double cut or satin.

As for design, I'm up for anything from a Game Warden Extended to a tried-and-true Nessmuk design. 4 to 5 inches max blade length.

Satin at .140 to .150

Smaller ABA! or close. With the straight handle. Not sure if you could make enough of those though...the whole world would want it!!!

Rounded like GW butt also.

3/16" Thick, 4.5" blade, 5.5" handle (includes chisel/scraper shaped pommel/skullcrusher) w/ integral fingerguard/choil. Grooved thumb-ramp. Offered in DC and Satin, and Snakeskin Nukarta as well as all those awesome G-10 mixes need to be available.
You already know what I think for shape and design, but I'll post it for comments.

Thanks for addressing this Jerry! You ROCK!

As others have mentioned, fairly thin--3/16 sounds good. Something of a guard, but no choil. Personally, I like the grooved thumb ramp as well.

I vote for black and tan G10;)

That about sums it up, +1 on Guyon's post... Full height grind, something like a short DABA without the Desert coating, maybe with a li'l recurve to the blade? 0h, and snakeskin micarta handles would ROCK.

As above DABA without coating (satin or DC maybe), green linen or snakeskin would seem to suit well.

As mentioned above, something with a slim profile that can be manipulated between the fingers to work with wood rather than a hefty chopper. Almost like a Busse take on the Alan Wood / Ray Mears woodlore knife would be my preference.

Something small enough to be on you all the time in the woods, let large enough to handle some work :)

I would say that the ideal woodcraft knife would be a 0.15 inch thick SHBA. An Anorexic SHBA if you will. Call it the ASHBAT.The thinner stock is necessary. Give it a Birds Beak

For me it would be a flat ground Ratmandu in INFI. I love the design and that handle in G10 rocks.

Jerry,
What about something like the Skookum Bush Tool, but with a drop point? There are lots of threads about it in the survival forum if you want pics. I am actually about to buy one, but if it will come out in INFI, heck, I can wait two weeks.

The design departs enough from prior Busse designs that I think most folks will have a hard time saying they don't need one because it is too much like some other Busse they already own. In other words, I think it would go like hotcakes.

Here are the stats on the Skookum Bush Tool:

SBT Specifications

Overall length 8 9/16"

Blade Length 4 5/16"

Handle Length 4 1/4"

Knife Weight 6.67 oz

Knife and Sheath Weight 9.95 oz

Blade Steel A2

Blade Thickness 1/8"

Oh, and it has a Scandi grind too. :D

Cobalt is close. Boss HOG, send me some INFI and I'll test out my new grinder, you never know what might evolve!!!! I'll make it close to the "SweetHeart" size. It will probably have birds beak bottle opener on the end to help quench the thirst of a hard day of "Woodcrafting".

Something like this:

sweetheartku1.jpg

-THIN blade (anorexic or leaner)
-Small guard if one at all . . . but there has to be a talon hole somewhere, right? I would stay clear of the Nick style guard though . . . I like the blade being close to the handle lines for a bushcraft knife
-Handle: Micarta, g-10, Teak, Cocobola (sp?), or other very durable handle material.
-Finish: DC or Satin. Don't coat it with anything!!!

Blade: would a Scandi grind be possible (depending on the thickness of the blade of course)?

Edit: the blade shouldn't be longer than 5". 4" or so would be ideal. And if it's a bushcraft knife, it really shouldn't be too wide of a blade. 1" or so tops.

When I think of a bushcraft knife, my thoughts to to Moras, and other Scandinavian style knives.

3/16
5" Blade full flat
No Choil
guard w/ talon hole
Green or Orange Micarta
Double cut or satin

This will be exciting. Now I have to start saving for this Busse too.

Thanks Jerry... :)

4-4.5" drop point blade, 1.25" blade width, 1/8" thickness, full flat ground, small guard like EDC style knives but with a round GW type butt. I would prefer no choil on this one but a small choil is also fine.

Definately Satin or at least DC! Micarta is about perfect for a hard used knife without being too slippery.

All great ideas......:):):)

and I know that the "Great Jerry" will work those out but C'mon.....

I know you all want a little tiny bit more??????

SO SPILL:thumbup::thumbup:

I will say that the ABA is pretty close as it was made:thumbup: Also when I met with Ducci and saw his SBBA I thought it was also a good blade but in my opinion not as good as the BA-III design. If the ABA was 90% of the way to a woodcraft knife then I thought that the SHBA was 85% of the way there; so they are close.

But I want to go home from the office and measure the ABA I have and compare it to some others blades I have at home that have features that would make the ABA better.

I very much look forward to this knife. It has been on my mind ever since I found Busse knives, that I'd just have a custom knife made along these lines to suit my needs.

So BRING IT!!! :D:D
