Wanna Help Design The HOG SAR Knife ? ? ? ? . . .

On handle material, a bright color like the Yellow G-10 (and our team color) is great if a knife is set down somewhere but EVERYONE seems to prefer Micarta for its feel and how it looks when customized with sanding.

I would lean toward Canvas Micarta. If there was a brighter colored LINEN that would be really nice.
i have seen red micarta before, it looks good

I'd prefer micarta as well. If there was a cool color, great, if not any canvas or linen would be good with me.

I think Tony G needs to go hiking and get 'lost' somewhere in Skamania County. Just let us know what your coordinates are;)

Agreed PG :) Here's 8's "Trifecta" kit. It is actually more worn than before so it's harder to tell but not too long ago there was more coating just above the belly. Most use was 2" in front of the choil and the 2" at the point. One more nit picky thing... I would like to have the thumb ramp moved forward. My thumb wants to be farther forward when choking up, using the choil and pushing on the little stuff. Same on the SFNO's thumb ramp. Just ahead of the choil over the working edge is PERFECT imo.

Edited to add: You can see the point used on the SAR Warden for splitting smaller wood fuel as mentioned.

I do like the Stripper sized/shaped blade with the changes you mention Progunner. No swedge, no recurve for this kid :)

Those are the purtiest looking blades Ive seen in a while. EXTRA LOVED.

i think maybe a lil bigger might be in order, something with a good sharp point to help remove stitches. if it has a false edge it might as well be the real deal and make it sharp so you can back slash folks from their seat belts. thumb ramp should be a bit forward in front of a smaller choil.
to aid batoning it should have a blade long enough so the false edge won't interfere and ruin your baton. for work around ice the sar guy should have a pair of these which should have ice climbing picks on the pommel so the rescuer using both knives can climb ice walls hand over hand. and i guess if he will be doing this the handle should provide an extended rear dropped pommel so the hands won't slide off and to help keep the blade from flying out during Sasquatch fighting.
for structure building i would guess 3/8th in thickness should do and would also provide enough lateral strength to pry loose the snowcat tracks when they freeze over night in the wet snow.

should also be sized bigger than cobalts battle mistress

Damn Skunk--you nailed that one!:D

Can you get us some red outfits, that are non binding but pretty visible? Not too much, because it's easy to get overheated...I would think they would be sweet with that sword:)

I'm liking the NARK'ish knife idea. And after thinking about the suggestions I made, I'm probably looking more at a survival knife and less at a dedicated SAR knife.

So... A converted NARK could be a SARK? Sounds like a Dr. Doolittle line to me, but it works!

I like that idea too. Here is the basic blade shape in a NARK and a BATAC, with the obvious difference in handles (although the BATAC pommel is close to the DCH version)

That even has room for serrations:cool:

Hey if that handle was hollow how much scotch could it hold?

.

6-7" blade, flat spine, thumb ramp, flat butt for hammering, NO CLIP POINT! No false edges! This needs to be useful for battoning and chopping through brush and crap! COntoured handles.. Double cut! Finish just wears off, (although it does look cool as it wears!) Mag G-10 scales, or maybe canvas...

No serrations! Those wear down and are damned hard to sharpen, and are just trouble when I batton.

Make this baby heavy, but not insane! I still have to carry this beast!

Jerry, thanks for doing this!!

I would like the HOG SAR knife to have:
8" blade (at LEAST .25 thick)
straight handle with flat butt
coated blade
thumb ramp with grooves
brightly colored handle..mags would be cool..
straight spine
no serrations
penetrator tip
saber grind

About time you posted Mike;)

I think good chopping attributes, but not a beast to carry is a good generalist way to describe it. Most of us have Heavy Hearts, so the beast side is covered...:D

Dunner....great Trio. I use an SFNO, Bandicoot and sometimes a GW when I have INFI on me. I used to use an old K-bar but its seen better days.

Yep. Great to see you at the trough Mike. I am with you on the big SAR knife specs. I like SFNO sized (maybe add 1/2 in length) with a straight spine. Thumb ramp forward over first 1 1/2" of blade. NOW... for me the IDEAL way to add chopping ability to the SFNO would be to make that thumb ramp against a raised spine (a ramp up to a spine above handle level and straight out to the point) to allow for a nice sabre and long flat or convex grind (this would be OUTSTANDING IMO). This would be a virtual billboard of INFI like a smaller FBM. This would add mass without making the blade too long. Flat pommel. Magnum slabs. Penetrator tip. .27" stock INFI! Yes Please :D

I'm sorry if people are getting sick of me posting but I am just too jacked up about this :foot:.

I dont see why so many of you would like large, chopper, bowie type blades!

I would want something that is 3/16" thick with a 4 1/2-5" blade with a glass breaker and seatbelt cutter.

Keith H, there are some teams who would want those things. Those types of tasks end up getting done by first responders like firefighters, police and EMT's. Search and Rescue may need those things in a REAL SHTF scenario where we were employed in urban/highway missions. We are all volunteer and generally are only called out for backcountry (at least my team and neighboring teams like Silver Star SAR) searches and rescues. We go looking for lost or injured hunters, berry pickers, mushroom hunters, hikers and so on. Most of our work is bushwacking and deep woods stuff so that's why I keep focussing on a small knife for camp chores to hang high on a vest for convenient quick cuts and a large heavy chopper for team and subject survival :)

Many members of other teams would be surprised that we carry such serious cutting tools but they never dispute their carry and use once they see what we can do with them ;)

And Barrabas, it sounds like you have a similarly sweet trio

ok, that makes sense. When i imagine search and rescue i imagine guys in a yellow helicopter.

Ah... Brilliant! Photos

Here is a link to pics from our '07 Winter 24 hour pack test to prove we can sustain ourselves "on station" for a full day. This is just a wee bit out of date. Justin is now a member ;). I had my Rat with me since my SFNO and HOGFSH were getting new slabs around that time. No sleeping bag, no sleeping mats. Good times.
