Wanna Help Design The HOG SAR Knife ? ? ? ? . . .

The new DCH handle in Yellow G-10, Orange G-10, Natural Micarta, or Green Micarta with a choil-less 6" drop point in Satin.

Also, it should be saber or flat ground and 3/16" to .20" thick because if it's Scandi ground it would have to be thinner, like an 1/8" to 5/32". A full Convex grind like the HOG Muk would be really cool, and it could be called the HOG Jack!

I agree with everything Dunner has said. He along with River 8 know their stuff. I don't have near the SAR experience they have. I have only participated in seven SAR missions 2 rescues and 5 recoveries. I do have a few opinons about an SAR style knife though. I don't think we need serrations or a recurve style blade. I think a straight spine with edges sharp enough to get sparks from a ferro rod and batoning is needed. If it is a larger blade 6.5" or better will need a choil, but with a shorter blade specially if it is 4.5" to 5" it does not need a choil. I want as much blade for cutting as possible in a smaller blade. I also like the idea of having a pommel where it can be pounded. A smaller blade needs to be around .2 thick. A larger blade somewhere around .25-.3 thick. I really would like a full height grind with a convex edge.

I must confess that I have had several Busse Combat blades in the past, but have sold them all. I do have several Swamp Rats still. However, if this goes the way I hope and we listen to those who really know the SAR field like Dunner and River 8 I will for sure have another Busse Coombat blade. I wish we could get SARHound in on this thread as well. Thanks for listening to everyone's ideas Jerry!

I only have a few knifes, but here is what I would like to see in a survival knife. First, what is the definition of a true survival knife? Personally, I would what something light weight but not a feather. Something of normal size I could carry around, but it wouldn’t be in the way. Specifically, I would want of course INFI. The blade no more than 4 inches, and the knife no longer than 8.5 inches. I would want it to, if possible, weigh no more than 7 ounces (give or take). I would want the handle to be bead blasted for a grippy textured feel. The blade should be double cut. The knife should operate on land as well as in the water. It should be able to cut small branches. The purpose of the Busse survival knife would be able handle most if not all small to medium survival tasks. Don’t get me wrong, I like a beefy knife like the rest of you, but it has its purposes. In the lean mean chances that we may end up in a survival situation, I would want to have a couple knifes. Oh, I would also like to see a Busse Combat folder.

Hmmm... S

Seems like everyone is interested in a 4-6 inch blade.

How 'bout a resurrection of the SFNO. Call it the SARNO.

A SFNO with a few modifications to the handles and blade.

I'm thinking similar to the overal NARK with the semi double edgeblade and harpoon tip. I guess the pommel could be some form or shape for smashing things. SFNO sized. Maybe???

That's pretty close to the SJTAC I had Ban modify, except for the handle color and choil-less part. A round butt definitely feels nicer than a pointy one!:p

Excellent!

I say somewhere in the 6-8 inch range and designed for maximum chopping. Saber grind and .25-ish and be able to choke back on the handle. No recurves, no swedge.

Maybe in INFI version of the original Ratweiler.

That sounds almost like an FSH if you get up to the 8" range... :D

Similar to the Classic Loveless Chute knife except integral guard. 5 to 6 inch blade 1 inch wide straight edge, no serrations, clip point full flat grind 3/16th thick. I would like to see a SAR only mirror polish version as well as a satin. I would also like to see it look like the classic chute knife.

SAR knives and survival knives are why I got involved with knives in the first place. So here is my opinion. Start with a RMD. Make it out of INFI. 6 inch cutting edge. Strait, sharp edged, spine, 0.20-.22 thick. No clip point, no drop point, no serations, minimum choil. Double cut finish. Magnum handles.

I believe the SAR is not intended as a Survival design. You are describing the Mini Muk.

Jerry already made one of those:

My shot of it.

I've never seen a Mini Muk, so I looked it up on the internet. I like it. It does look like something I would mind having as a survival knife. Also, to extend the specifications here are some other thoughts; infi round flat hammer end, so I could pound stuff, a blade guard, but not too big to impede finger grip while shaving wood etc. Maybe an infi hollow handle. I'm sure Mr. Busse would design it so it would be bomb proof. Just some ideas.

4.5" blade
flat spine
swedged tip
round pommel w/hole
Green coating
canvas micarta
thumb ramp w/light grooves
.188-.250 thick
no choil
just my opinion TTD

I'm liking the NARK'ish knife idea. And after thinking about the suggestions I made, I'm probably looking more at a survival knife and less at a dedicated SAR knife.

So... A converted NARK could be a SARK? Sounds like a Dr. Doolittle line to me, but it works!
