After placing three (successful and quite satisfactory) orders for a currently popular Chinese brand of knife with a foreign dealer, a security person at my Visa banker called to say that they had flagged two suspicious attempts to use my card online.

Neither attempt was by me.

Visa immediately canceled the card and is sending me a replacement.

The security person said she had no way of determining where the scamster is located or even whether the location is inside or outside of the U.S.

I certainly can't point the finger at anyone. This could have happened at my pharmacy or supermarket.

That said, these were my only foreign sales and the only times in recent months that I have used this card for anything out of the ordinary.

For the time being, at least, I will not be doing business with anyone I don't know. I regret having to take this action. These knife purchases have been more than satisfactory; the blades are as advertised and the shipping was as expected, about two weeks per order to the U.S.

Further, the dealer was extremely helpful in answering my questions.

I also regret having to make this post without being able to identify the guilty party. (Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like the credit card company is going to be able to help any further. If that changes, I will update this information.)

Still, there is a need to know on the part of members here, and that is why I am sharing this information.

I believe another member here had an earlier and similar problem, although I was unable to find that post.

I hope this helps others to be careful, and I also hope it does not injure any innocent parties.

the same thing happened to me and another forum member. our banks reported suspicious activiy on our cards right after we both ordered sanrenmu knives from ebay. both of us ordered from people outside the usa.

I try to use Paypal for all internet purchases. Using a credit card in the local restaurant is risky enough without throwing the internet into the mix.

Clarification: I used my Visa via PayPal for these Ebay purchases.

Jeremiah, did you use PayPal or use your credit card directly?

The whole point in using Paypal is not divulging your CC # to the vendor you purchase from. Your problem had nothing to do with your Chinese purchase.

I had this to me happen last week also.My credit card was canceled, and a investigation was started.I don't know where the charges initiated from, hopefully I'll find out where.
Thank goodness that my credit card company contacted me,as soon as they noticed the suspicious charges.
The charges were for Xbox live.

There was a period where some knife store website's were hacked a while ago. My CC got copied TWICE in a month. Both attempts were caught and declined by VISA....first was a bunch of auto accessories in the US, 2nd was a $3k furniture purchase in Austrailia.....

Add me to the list. I used mine to buy some stuff from a U.S. internet store. Somebody ended up buying $500.00 worth of clothes in England and India with my information. Took about a week to get my money back. Never did find the thief.

A friend had the same thing happen to him, they used his funds to buy online games. Never found the thief there either. Seems to be pretty common anymore!

You guys have got to start using PayPal. I refuse to buy from a vendor that doesn't take PayPal unless there is no other choice. I buy a lot of stuff from the internet and haven't had my CC# stolen yet. Knock on wood.

i used paypal which is linked to both my checking and credit card account. perhaps he was somehow able to hack paypal and find the credit card number?? i really have no idea what happened, i just think it cant be a coincidence now that several of us have had our credit card numbers stolen after buying sanrenmu knives from dealers out of the USA.

If someone was able to hack the PayPal system it would have nothing to do with knives or China. Why would a hacker only take CC#s from people buying sanrenmu knives. How would sanrenmu be any different than any other chinese vendor on ebay? How would Chinese vendors be any different than other vendors on ebay? Sorry I just don't buy it. Using a CC for the purchase, yes. Paypal, Nope.

I agree -- I really don't see how this could happen.

And yet, searching my records, I have no other explanation.

At no time recently have I handed my card to anyone in a restaurant or anywhere else where someone could disappear and copy down the numbers.

With the exception of my recent Ebay purchases, I've used this card only in reputable, local retail stores with electronic card machines WHERE THE CUSTOMER SLIDES THE CARD. If these supermarkets, pharmacies and other establishments are stealing, then we're all in a load of trouble.

Here in San Diego County we just had a rash of CC fraud. All of the gasoline pumps can be opened with a common master key. The thieves were opening the pumps and installing a device inline with the data path for the card readers. When you slid your card through the slot the device recorded the CC #. There was no indication that anything strange has happened. After ~24 hours the thieves would drive up to the pump and harvest 1000's of CC#s using a blue tooth Xmitter to talk to the device inside the pump. They call the devices skimmers. The skimmers were installed in random pumps near exits on popular highways. Skimmers are even easier to install in a store if they have someone on the inside to help. They just plugin inline in the data path of the card reader.

i really dont know what the deal is, this problem occurred right after i ordered the sanrenmu and then noticed another forum member mentioned an identical story. the credit card company didnt say much either, i realy dont know how it happened.

Just for clarification; when I use my paypal account the vendor is NOT given my Credit card number?????

I spoke to a security person at the bank that issued my card. She said that while unlikely, security at PayPal can be breached just like it can anytime there is any electronic transaction.

I asked the bank to contact me with the results of its preliminary investigation, which it routinely forwards to Visa for follow-up. I understand that this is all done electronically; the bank looks for any pattern of others being scammed.

I intend to follow-up with both Visa and PayPal. I will also ask the knife vendor about any other problems he may have had. I'm not sure what to expect from him, but his communication up until now on routine questions has been excellent.

I will let you know what I find.

Please let me know if you discoverd that paypal released CC numbers. I have always been of the impression I was safe since I only used a CC and did not link it to my bank accounts.

That is correct. And that is obviously safer than using your CC directly. You should continue with that practice.

But whether you are completely safe with PayPal is what I am trying to find out. That is why I have asked my bank to report back on what it finds about the attempts to use my CC.

If anyone else has fraud issues with a CC I encourage you to contact your card's security system and ask these same questions.
