since it is coming for you i think a kopa would be more treasured than an every day carrying knife. they come in a variety of different scales (handle materials) and they are a little dressier. (tell him he can wear it when he takes you for a dinner date:D) NGK is a good site to get them from (very reputable) and here is their kopa page.

Don't think you could go wrong with the ZDP Endura. I think there's a new Goddard Jr. rumored to be coming soon with white micarta that looks real nice.
How much you wanna spend? ; )

Keep in mind she can't say too much because the person being gifted to is probably a member here. Specifics could blow her cover.

I'm going to say that the Stretch II would be hard to beat, you might also want to look at the Tazman Salt if he hasn't tried a hawkbill yet.

Also. Two knives I think everyone should check out in person are the Caly 3 and Military, pictures don't convey how good they feel, the Military especially is so different from just about everything else out there you have to hold it before you know if you like it or not. If he doesn't mind big folders a D-2 Military would be good, if he just likes small/medium knives the Caly 3 is a sure thing (especially the ZDP-189 carbon fiber version).

I'll give another nod to the incredible the Caly 3. Full flat grind blade and you can get it with a carbon fiber handle. ;)

It's great for an edc knife.

Cheers,
Mike

And another vote for the Caly 3. If it were me though, I'd be happy with any Spydie, even if it was a double of one I already owned.

Check out his current collection. If it is all plain edges then stick with those. If it is all small
EDC knives ,find a similar one he does not have preferably in an exotic steel like ZDP.
If he has a lot of martial arts knives like the Chinook3 and the Civilian get him one of those. The spyderco site has the type of knives set up so you can find out what he likes without having to ask. Doing a bit of investigation will help you find out exactly what he wants.
Once you learn what he likes we can tell you exactly the knife he would freak out over.

If he likes little knives ,go with the Caly but if he likes exotic steel the ZDP endura or blades for self defence the Manix.

3 1/2 inches is on the larger and for modern spyderco. in that range although expensive the stretch to is an excellent choice. it is easily configurable to however he wants to carry is knife, left side right side up down. Very new and very hot. Also as has been mentioned the D2 to military it comes with a blade steel unique in the spyderco lineup, and its own uniquely colored handle. however it has a lock mechanism that is not for everyone. you may want to look at it and see if he has knives with a similar lock mechanism.

on the other hand there are the kopa and kiwi lines which offer natural wood or stone inserts very polished and refined. coincidently is a great knives for social offense like opening packages and clam packs on Christmas morning.

I think my short list would be the dark Quince wood handled kopa from new Graham knives believe it or not it is a relatively good deal at on hundred dollars less than most of this line in my opinion in attractive material.

there are other women on this forum, not very many I grant you. but there are a few active participants. and they are always very welcome. Oh and I just wanted to add if it were me I would love to have one of those new micro dyads, very classy and very useful. It is a knife with a steel handle with a bone insert, into blades one is serrated which has its uses, and one is plain edge.

Knife_Widow - What a lucky guy he is. What about the mini or full size Manix?
I am not sure if one, or both of them is going to be discontinued. They are very highly regarded for ergonomics, have a lot of fans on this forum and the Spydero forum, and sound like the size he would like. Good luck shopping. I am sure he will be very impressed you went to all this trouble. THANK GOD FOR WOMEN.:)

Military or Manix

either can be had in PE or CE and are around a $100 each. Military also just came out with a D2 sprint run around the same price.

take care

I would love a Caly 3 for Xmas. I'm also asking for a mini manix. A stretch 2 would be a great gift although its quite expensive. Any Spydie is a great gift though.

As many have suggested the Caly3 (particularly with Carbon Fiber scales and a ZDP blade) would be a great knife to give as a gift. Also, a Kopa would be nice if you think he'd have use for a little more upscale, socially acceptable, "dress" knife to carry in slacks or a suit.

If you don't have a real good impression of his taste in knives I'd stick to more traditional designs. When you get into bigger sizes (Manix is really thick and heavy, Military is pretty large) or less traditional shapes/features (Civilians, waved enduras or delicas) you risk entering the love 'em or hate 'em realm. Don't get me wrong, all great knives just slightly better chance they might fall in hate 'em end of the spectrum.

Good luck and welcome to the forums.
