*Warning* Virus Alert ...For those who use Photobucket.

Ok...Although it only took 'em 8 days to respond to my email with the screenshot attached, I did finally receive a reply early this morning. I'm kinda hoping that they decided to act quickly on the info provided and reply later, but at least I have an update...

Dear Jaxx,

This is VERY helpful. Thanks again. We're working on isolating and removing a.s.a.p.

Sincerely,

Your Photobucket Support Team

Hopefully, we are nearing the end of virus issues on their site. In the meantime, I have been on PB a lot in hopes of capturing more screenshots, but everything seems to be running smoothly with the exception of a error warning bar across the top of my browser window about something not being able to run that happens every couple of page loads. Since I can still do what I want to do (upload, copy&paste, etc.), I'm guessing that this has to do with an advertisement not being able to run properly under my current security settings, and so I don't really care much about that, LOL. ;) I'm still running full scans with multiple malware scanners daily, and so far they are coming up clean with no downloaded threats. :)

I have also noticed that even though I have signed every email sent to them with 'Xander', which is a name that I use occasionally on the 'Net with those that I don't know or expect to ever meet but have supplied a phone number where I can be reached, they are now calling me 'Jaxx'... So I believe that they are aware of this thread. Just a hunch! ;)

I'm not saying that the problem is fully resolved over there...I don't work for PB, so that's not for me to say. What I'm saying is that it seems to be better so far for me anyway... But you may want to remain cautious while using their site.

IMHO this is completely unacceptable as a response from photobucket. They should have disabled ads immediately, until the offending one was tracked down, instead of leaving their site in a state where it could infect many users over the course of weeks.

This pretty much guarantees I will never use my account over there again, even though I own a mac and wasn't affected by the malicious software. Their response to the threat was simply pathetic, and put many, many people at risk :thumbdn:

I wouldn't be quite so fast to say that... ONE of the two ads that my screenshot captured (for XOOM.com, in spanish) I never saw again very shortly after I sent the email. The other I saw repeatedly, but I never saw an alert when it loaded, like I did when I captured the screenshot. Actually, after my email, I never saw another alert from my firewall/AV at all while on the site. I'm thinking that it's the reply that was slow, not the action(s) taken...I hope.

In their defense, I feel that I should at least state this for the record. If you still feel the same, well, I can't really blame you for feeling that way. Personally I like the format of PB, so I chose to try and help them get a grip on the problem instead of looking for another image hosting website.

Do you guys do PB for free or do you pay? I pay and have never run into a problem.

I've had a free account for years. Since I seem to have lots of storage room left, and have never run into a bandwidth problem, I haven't upgraded yet. I will eventually, because I'd like to get more detailed stats on more than just 4 pix and have more room for vidclips. I have over 1275 pix uploaded so far. :) ...If that site ever crashes, I will be so screwed!!! LOL

I believe that the problem is in the linked in advertising, so AFAIK, it's just us free account holders that are experiencing the issues.

You should get a paid account. It is only like 20 bucks for a year and it is SO MUCH NICER:)

I've never had a problem, and I've not even had my Kaspersky pop up and tell me its blocking something.

Are you cruising other's public folders? Or clicking on ad links?

I'm still baffled how some are having this problem and others aren't.

Nope, just going there when it happened.

The last two times I have been(last two days) I haven't had a problem, or anything blocked. Doesn't mean they have it fixed though, since it never happened every time you go there.
Hopefully they do though....they have had ample time, and if its not fixed by now this may be there way of getting people to pay to not have to deal with the add's(which they come from). J/k, don't think they would really do that.

No, man! :) I never click on the ads, and I was in my own album when I got hit, and also each time a blocked threat alert popped up.

You don't have to click them. The darn things pop up anytime your curser gets near them, really annoying. :grumpy:

Ran into this last night on PB... Meant to post this earlier. but did already send the screenshot to PB Support. This looks like it was trying to get into Java, but got blocked.

DESTINATION & SOURCE addresses have been blotted out to protect to innocent... Mainly me, but also most likely someone's hijacked computer on the other end too.

^Well I just logged off there right quick! I didn't see anything while there(this time).

You would think they would have this fixed by now. The longer it takes, the more I think they may be wanting us all to pay for the no add version:p

Ken, my N360 caught & blocked this right away. So long as yours is getting live updates automatically, which I believe is the default setting, yours should block this threat too. :)

I have never had any threats pop up on PB. Ever.

Hopefully that does not simply meant they have already got me, and I just did not notice.

I don't run the most sophisticated security on my computer. Just AVG free.

I've recently tried out three free anti virus software programs: Avira, AVG 8.5, and Avast.

IMHO Avast was the best of the three. YMMV.

It seemed to be a more sophisticated program. Better interface, better options, fast. To uninstall it requires an uninstaller program from their website and you have to run it in Safe Mode.

Whenever you download an antivirus program, check what other tools and documentation they have available and download those too.

edit: I liked ver 4.8. I tried ver 5.0 and didn't care for the new interface. Went back to ver 4.8.

Here my interaction with pb over the last few days. I don't get any warnings, just a hard lock up. This thread was a great heads up on this issue. I probably wouldn't have contacted them if not for this thread. Thanks Jaxx and all who contributed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

When visting your site luckydomain-88.c o m(DON'T CLICK) caused my computer to completely lock
up.

This the the third time this has happened and this is totally unacceptable.

I don't expect fast service from the free version but your site should not cause
me to hard reboot my machine.

Dear XXXXX,

Thank you so much for the report. We are incredibly sorry for the issue and we have been working non-stop trying to locate the culprit. We appreciate the information and are doing our best to locate it. Thank you so much for letting us know what ad showed up when the issue started. No user has been able to report this. We believed it was a paid advert and we are tracking it however we could not locate the ad. We will investigate this advertiser at this time. Thank you again and we are sincerely sorry for the issue

The following is a basic canned response we have been supplying user's in regards to the issue...................
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,

Thanks for the prompt response. I tried to do a screen capture but my computer was completely locked. I tried a ctrl-alt-del, waiting and everything I could think of. The only way to resolve the issue was to hold the power button until everything shuts down.

Thanks

Dear xxxxx,

Thanks so much for the information. I'm forwarding the ticket with the luckydomain information on so they can be investigated. Again I am sorry you had to deal with this. Hopefully we will have this resolved within the week! Again Thanks for the ad information. Much appreciated!

Sincerely,

Your Photobucket Support Team

That's a little scary!!

After getting the ctrl-alt-del issue, mine popped up a screen to inform me my access privileges had been blocked, shutting down the machine resulted in the 'loading personal pref...' windows for 1/3s, 'saving personal pref..' until I used the power button (again). By this point it was in a loop and I could do nothing.

It is interesting how it seems to be hitting different person's machines differently.
