Warranty Mishap

The picture is zoomed in quite a bit and doesn't look as bad as it was. 1/8" is a pretty good amount of material. And it wasn't right in front of the tang, it extended the whole length of the blade. Just looking at the knife in comparison with another Military it was easy to see how much skinnier the blade was. I don't like skinny blades and that one just jumped out. If I couldn't see how skinny it was I would have probably never noticed.

I know these are production knives that are sharpened by hand, and I will put up with a lot of little things that others complaint about at times. However, I couldn't pay that much for that fault and keep it. Not only does it mess with the blade geometry, it takes life away from the blade. Guess it just bothers me and seems to be more and more common.

FMB, What sums it up is you're not satisfied with it. There are a lot of reasons we like, or dislike knives. If it just doesn't work for you then it should go. Even if it was only a $30 knife you should get what makes you happy or get rid of it. It really is subjective and always will be.

Maybe I haven't bought enough Spyderco's lately to notice any problems or lowering of quality standards. I love my M390 millie and it's not much different from yours. If I sell it it's because I'm needing the money. I'm not at all dissatisfied with it, nor any of the other ones I've bought in the last year. Pure cutting and slicing performance wise I'll put up any of them against the Striders and CR knives I've had. In fact it was them I got rid of, all except for a 3V SMF.

Some guys go nutzo over slime green colored knives. Personally, I'd pass on a free one. That's how it goes though. :)

Just got my package back today (with much quicker turn around time than usual!) and in the box was a brand new titanium military with the ss insert in the lockbar. I also sent in my m390 millie with the scratch in the blade which I asked to have buffed, but that was also completely replaced. Wow! I'm extremely surprised and impressed.

I kind of wonder if this isn't all a byproduct of all of the sprints coming out as preorders back to back. It seems like preordered sprints would really raise the stakes over at Golden and force the tolerances to be lowered slightly. Add to that the amount of knives which might be getting sent back for fairly minor issues (due to lowered tolerances) all at once and that's a recipe for a stressed out W&R/CS department. As much as I hate to say it, maybe it's time to back off on the sprints a little bit, or at least space them out more, or, barring that (as I love sprints just as much as anybody) realizing that the tolerances for preordered sprints aren't going to be as high and not freaking out about minor things. Maybe try to curb the preorders altogether, as it seems like Spyderco's forced to lower tolerances in order to ensure that the amount of knives preordered is delivered.

interestingly enough, this Ti military has a very weak detent :p oh well.

Edit: It also has lock rock and is uncentered... it can't be that hard to get right can it?

I say we let Spyderco make the decisions. After all, the risks that they take, are theirs, not ours. It appears that too many people are hyper-critical and just need to cool out. If you think there are real long-lasting problems that would negatively affect your life, you can always stop buying Spyderco knives. If I had thick enough skin to allow others to "critique" my work openly on my forum or my sponsored forum; I would at least want others to refrain from conjecture. And "seeming" like Spyderco is "Forced" to do anything is, well, a bit of a stretch wouldn't you agree. If you can make a difference, I suggest you apply, in person, for a position in the R&D department. YES, I have felt the same way before and then I recalled, It really has nothing to do with my feelings on the issue.

Yes, blast away, but you can't help but think... is this the least bit constructive at times.

A sign on the highway in Ridgway, Colorado... no joke!

I think you misunderstood my post. I've had nothing but awesome experiences with Spyderco and think their quality is top notch. I'm not complaining about the way they do things, just offering an idea as to the potential source of the problem a lot of people seem to have been having here lately. I sure as hell am not blasting away at Spyderco. Maybe turn down the rhetoric a bit...you're at about an 8, you need to be at about a 3.

Alright I got rid of most of the lock rock and it's pretty close to being centered, but that detent is still very weak.

Your disrespect is about an 8, you need to be at about a 3. ;) Go easy man... Just wanted you to see how it comes across, that's all... I had mentioned in my post, been there.

As a prospective owner of multiple Spydercos this thread is very interesting to me.

I just got my first one, the Para2 tan with s35vn. I purchased it after having some initial reservations reading about Spyderco's warranty. I figured I would give one a shot to see how I like it and if I thought I would ever need to disassemble it or send it in for warranty work.

After reading this thread, I'm not sure how many of the other Spydercos I've added to my wish list will actually make it there. The knives I want from this company are not cheapies and if I'm going to be dropping $150 ish on every knife, the quality of the warranty plays a big role. Kershaw sells blems without warranties at a very steep discount so clearly the warranty adds value and cost into the knife.

When it comes time to buy another knife, I'm going to be looking at the BM 275 Adamas, the Manix2 XL and probably a Tiger stripe ZT0350. The quality of the warranty is going to play a small but pivotal role in the final decision. I would love to see Spyderco make strides in their Customer Service and Warranty departments so I can buy more of them without hesitation.

^ Spyderco analysis each warranty issue individually. They have the right to bend the warranty as they see fit, as do most companies I have read about and experienced.

Spyderco IMO have some of the best QC on the market. Remember they are much smaller then Benchmade or Kershaw that forms part of KAI enterprises. Either way, they are all good and spend enough time on the forums you will here about QC and warranty mishaps or complaints on every company.

^ Agreed. I've had a number of Spydercos and never had a problem with fit and finish. Of the small issues I have had (Broken clip, lost pivot screw) they've all been handled well. I wouldn't take the complaints in this thread as the norm, so much as the exception. In other words, buy the Spyderco...you won't go wrong.

Well, I sent Charlynn another email. I really don't know what to do at this point.

The cf millie they sent back had some messed up cf, but I'm not really fixated on that.

Many years ago I purchased a new Spyderco, a Jot Singh Khalasa, which I thought was great until a week later when the pocketclip loosened up to the point of nonfunctionality. Tightening the screws made no difference and I noted a faint crack in the micarta scale. I sent it in with a note telling them that I would gladly pay for repairs.

A month later I got the knife back. Some monkey had literally TORN the pocket clip off the scale leaving a ragged hole in the micarta -- it was in far worse condition than I had sent it in to them. When I sent it in the clip was a little loose and I could see the faint beginnings of a crack but it still looked like a new knife. With the knife was a form letter accusing me of having "misused" the knife and had thereby voided the warranty. This, for a brand new knife that had never been used to cut anything, after I'd offered to pay for repairs. Needless to say, I was somewhat upset.

It was many years before I purchased another Spyderco product. I think they make some good knives, particularly their G10 Tasman, Endura, and Delica. I'm shocked to hear that their QC is still so shoddy 10 years later. But at least they still have better customer service than Microtech.

Seems to be a common occurance for me unfortunately.. :(

I've been on this forum for a little while and while Kershaw has a few QC issues popping up, I have never EVER heard of a bad customer service/warranty experience with them.

Those threads are out there, but as with everything on forums, you should take it with a grain of salt.
