A blade opener tool. This one is by Case, but others make them. A small screwdriver would work, or a dime, if you want to do it the hard way. Any of the small pocket/keychain pry tools would also do the job. Really, it's a matter of leverage and friction, and anything that's stronger than your fingernail, and big enough for you to get 2-3 fingers to do the work on should be enough to defeat the spring action.

I had one GEC in the past and I wondered why they made the spring so strong. It's unnecessary.

I'd you want to keep it, get it open part way with a screwdriver or something, and leave it like that (with the back spring fully extended) for a couple weeks. Soften it up a bit. Otherwise, it will not be a keeper for you.

That, or just return it and get a nice Hen & Rooster or German-made Boker traditional folder.

I generally use a small needle nose pliers which I have a number of choices available. The little ones generally reside on my desk so I know where they are and not mixed in with other hand tools. The little pliers on my Leatherman Ps4 usually works for opening a blade that is giving you problems due to either rust, dirt, or a strong spring.

Hope you like the Whaler. I assume that GEC pocket slip is wide enough for it.

Like your new Buck Vanguard. That handle is very functional and looks good!
