Was my 940 made on a Monday morning?

I just got my 940 back from benchmade for their sharpening, and only started noticing interesting things with the blade. What do you guys think?

The blade centering would bug the heck out of me, not to mention the grind asymmetry, especially considering the cost of the knife.

I'm not sure, I've only handled a couple, don't own a 940 personally. The two I've handled were definitely not off-centered in the handle like that though.

where is the grind asymmetry? I dont understand the problem. Centering is off though.

Does the blade have side to side play, have you tried tightening the pivot a bit? It might center out.

How long has the 940 been out 10 years or maybe longer . They still have this problem . Benchmade should take a good look at this and get there act together . I can see this happen with a new knife like the 761 when it came out issues with the detent . But a knife thats been out for over ten years . Not acceptable. I like benchmade but we have to call them out on the 940 QC

enlarged the pic 10 times and still did not see. The entire spine looks perfect to me.

Looks further toward the thumbstud on the left compared to the right where the grind starts, but again It could be lighting/perspective/mild insanity, also if it is in fact there it's nearly imperceivable

it looks off but I doubt the mssed with that while sharpening so it would have been like that. send them a message they always seem to take good care of everybody. see what they say

The right side is very gradual and elongated, while the lest side is a very sharp cut inwards. The flat line at the top of the blade where the grind starts is actually not perpendicular to the blade. It is at an angle. It's very obvious in person.

Blade also has side to side play, but tightening the pivot point makes the blade stiff when trying to close it.

With the axis lock depressed, the knife won't fall closed even with the side to side play. Very bizzare. I'd imagine it would be loose if it had side to side play, especially since benchmade just took it apart and oiled it.

Best I can figure is that the pivot itself is not perpendicular to the handle, making the blade off-centered. Could just be that a number of factors on the knife are slightly out of spec, making it a bit off on the whole.

The part of the blade which is light is one smooth grind on the blade top. The darker area is the other grind. Where the light meets the dark is the ridge where both grinds meet. It actually isn't perpendicular to the metal of the blade. It's slanted.

I know it's not a "cheap" knife, but I feel like having expectations for perfection are a bit unrealistic. I've got quite a few 940s and all of mine have centered blades. I also have many other Benchmades that aren't centered. I've noticed on lots of them that the grinds aren't always symmetrical, but that's just never been a concern for me at their price point. If I paid big bucks for a custom, then I'm sure I would have higher expectations.

I'm not trying to be picky, but sometimes my blade actually touches the handle/liner when I push it open. I don't think the centering should be that far off. Especially considering it is a 190 dollar knife.

My 100 dollar PM2 is perfectly centered, smooth, and a flawless grind.

Check the tightness on the swivel screw. If it's lose it could cause it to be offcenter. Otherwise enjoy the knife despite a few imperfections

Yeah I'd venture to say that the blade centering (at least so it's clear of the liner walls) is a reasonable requirement for any knife over the $100 mark

I would not be happy with the blade centering/play/action you have described, especially if it just came back from Benchmade. The grinds seem okay enough, but the rest is not right and would not be acceptable on a knife just shy of $200.

It's tight. Benchmade put it back together correctly. It just seems like the tolerances in manufacturing weren't there.
