Was my 940 made on a Monday morning?

The blade appears straight, so if all parts are put together properly as it appears, the blade should be relatively straight and center. If pivot adjustment has no effect, may want to check the washers between to see if they match up and are not being affected by something else

Some knivws deliberately space the blade to one side using different sized washers. Im not aware of any BM knives where this is the case though.

I think some are adjusted differently as the blades have small differences to them and hence subtly differences in fit and balance.

Send it back if you arent happy; send other BM Knives that need sharpening in the same shipment while youre at it.

Having a centered blade is a reasonable expectation for a knife at this price point. Perfect blade grinds, not so much.

I had to look at my Benchmade knives. All are centered except one and it is very, very close. Close enough not to worry about it.

I've got a couple Benchmades that are so far off center that they rub the liners as well. That is definitely something that I think shouldn't be acceptable for the price, I just think nit picking the symmetry is a bit overboard. But it's your knife and if you're not satisfied, they should do they best they can to fix it for you.

I took it apart, put it back together. Washers are identical. Now what?

now send it to bm again, specifically noting the issue of off centering. And no need to mention the asymmetry thing (honestly I do not see it as an issue).

I agree with everyone. The grind is no big deal, but the centering is once it starts running because that affects functionality. What should I do about it?

Maybe I should email them? It would be a shame to send it again if they can't do anything about it

Send it to them. If they have it in hand they are more likely to fix it or send you a new one. Don't bother with an email.

I would return that sucker.
Yeah, I'm aware of Monday morning cars where the production guys would throw an empty Coke bottle into the door panel before wrapping it up. Then, the new owner finds it a year later when he can't stand the rattling any more.
I look one look at that blade and shook my head...

Ive had 3 in the 94X series and ironically, the 940-1 was the worst in terms of action and centering. Never was able to get it centered and couldnt manage tight lockup with a free swinging blade. The 940 and 943 however were just about perfect examples. Point being, sometimes you just get one thats not perfect. I wouldnt say a lemon, but definitely not perfect.
If it bothers you, send it back.

Also there are some threads and resources about centering an off center blade. Sorry I dont have a link, but its only a quick search away.

Could be just me, but it looks better, slightly more center.

Seems to have some spacing differences between the washer, liner and blade, with the left having a tad more to my eyes. Assuming youve checked all the parts from junk, it may be an uneven surface. Either on that left liner. Everything does look straight and lined up.. just not center

.. or the blade itself. Seems like the right side of the blade around the pivot kind of sinks in, thinner. Could be just more uneven grind.. elsewhere. Just putting it out there.

I mean there really isnt much to a knife. Not much else would make a blade uneven. Cant find that reason and it still bugs, send it in. The uncentered blade is noticeable enough. If there no problems in the assembly/adjustments that you can find, basically nothing you can do, and its just off center in parts, send it back a bunk one.

Honestly, I've always had bad luck with Benchmade. I'm always have issues new from the box; 940-1 was so bad that the primary grind(geometry) of the blade was off, HK axis folder was so badly centered that the blade coating has been scratched off from rubbing the steel liners, more than half of them had very bad uneven grind(cutting edge);who even visually checks that badly?
Did they hire crazy eyes from Mr. Deeds?

No doubt they can claim that it's made in USA but at China's pre-2010 standards? Even China knife companies and counterfeiters have step their game up.

Considering their high prices and even higher prices after MAP, I'm through with giving BM any more of my monies.

Yes. You should contact Benchmade or the dealer from which you purchased the knife.

Not much we can do for you on the forum, except to assure you that the blade grind is within acceptable tolerances, and in my experience the BM axis lock knives have not been, again in my experience, perfectly centered.

My 890 IS perfectly centered, but my 550 and a couple of 551's I have (with stock scales) are not perfectly centered.

They are all still great cutting tools.

Contacted the folks over at benchmade.

Bought the knife straight through amazon, and it's been sitting on my nightstand for about a year. I hope benchmade's warranty covers alignment when it interferes with function (rubbing).

Do they always require you to send your knife back to them even for warranty? I hate the hassle of dealing with lemons!

lifetime warranty no charge for service,

except if the blade and handle is broken

and they don't refinish knives

not sending the knife back for warranty?

how would they fix it then?

cant think if any knife company that doesn't have you send the knife in for warranty issues
