Watered-down W&SS

WOW, I must be truly out of touch, lots of people are mentioning the coyote thread, especially the don't shoot guys. I didn't think that thread was too bad, pretty far from a "flame fest".

If someone disagrees with you, even emphatically, whining to the mods might not be the best course of action. Say what you feel and what you want then see yourself out, if you don't want to do it publicly there is always PMs or email. Seems there are several people bitching about people not having the same opinion as them, might as well complain about the weather. Chris

Next, if you don't like gear threads, don't read them - same goes with any other thread. I'm not interested in gun threads, so I don't read them. I am interested in traps, so, of course, these I read.

The one thing I don't like is when it breaks down into a pissing match. If you don't agree with something, that's fine, state your opinion, but it's not necessary to insult or belittle the other person/people to help prove your point. For God's sakes, we're supposed to be adults.

If you think there should be more skills threads, post some.

I also agree, if somebody starts a thread you like, tell them - we all like to know we're appreciated. It takes time to create a good thread, upload the pictures, etc. If nobody cares, why bother?

That's all I have to say at the moment.

If the overall disease were treated with this common sense approach to forum interaction, then 99% of the individual symptoms outlined in this thread would immediately become a non-issue.

And after all, there is still alot of good and relevant information posted in WSS. Heck, I just saw the "Knife/Gun for the Shower" thread in PracTac and it makes me glad I frequent WSS.

Don, I know this may come as a shock, but you sometimes come off as a touch abrasive. :p Could it have been the manner in which you made the point rather than the point you made that set this other poster off?

Oh, Captain Obvious is in town. You know, I want to hire you to be my Public Relations man, I really do. When I say something stupid, there is generally a conga line awaiting my return. No hard feelings.

When, on the other hand, I tell someone they're being an idiot, I'm the bad guy. A blatant idiot at that.

I could have said, "a fire bow and drill IS technology you dickhead," but I did not, therefore I was not abrasive. :)

I know this should go in Gadgets and Gear, but the good folks at MIT have just produced the Don Rearic filtering glasses. These glasses, that have a rose colour tint to them convert Don's peculiar sarcastic vocabulary into what his soul is really trying to convey. Here is just a sample:

I know. :D

Can I act like the other people and then maybe they will finally GET IT?

Are you angry? I think you need medicated, KGD, you seem so angry all of the time. And bitter...and sexless...you need suction...if you get suction, everything will just be all right but until that time, you are still going to be really angry and angry people suck...but mean people swallow...anyone like the movie "Gran Torino?" :D

I love this stuff. You don't get this kind of entertainment just anywhere.;):D
But, when it gets a little thick in this forum I feel some need for personal defense.

Seriously, Don- this is just a social intelligence thing. Once I get past the random not-quite-personal insults, the I'm-a-martyr-with-keyboard-Tourette's, and general lack of display of the social intelligence to write to people as if you desire or are even neutral on desiring agreement..... well, your posts often are pretty intelligent.

But- you seem to actively court disagreement with anything you say. In fact, part of the time I'd place it over the line into flat out rude.

Then you post endlessly about being a martyr because people disagree with you or get angry with your posts or name calling.

I'd love to see if it's possible for you to post the same actual content for one month without calling anyone names (yes, calling someone Captain Obvious is in fact name calling), without using any derivative of pissed, ass, sexual inhibition, or accusation of physical, moral, or mental problems on the part of another, and without any self-martyring references.

Just a month- it's entirely possible I'll miss it! But.... just one try. Hell, I'd even take the piss, ass, and sexual inhibition crap if you could just NOT fling poo at another forum member using it.

In the meantime. I'm probably stirring the pot a bit much and should get back to regular WSS activities.

not having a search tool (w/o paying for it) is clearly a handicap when it come to repetitive topics, it's also a handicap as good, older threads die an unnecessary death- threads move fast here and die quickly (maybe good in some cases :))

the one real strength I see in this forum is the breadth of experience in a very wide array of subjects and geographies

I also appreciate the some times contrasting "styles" of very "traditional" folk vs very "modernistic" folk- when you read between the lines you discover they have much more in common than in differences :)

Well I normally dont post, even though I've been around a while. But here goes.
The W&SS is way too "clique-eee". I've been out of high school too long to try to be one the "cool kids" again. Its exhausting, I've got a wife, kids, job, & too many hobbies that dominate the remainder of my time. I love the outdoors, love knives, guns, etc....found time to hunt & hike in 18 different states this year, take thousand of pictures. But i did it for my mental consumption 1st and foremost, not to hurry back to post so that my W&SS cred goes up. This being said I love reading this board their are some very knowledgeable people here that actually spend time outdoors, and some that dream of spending time outdoors doing the things they read about, and see others doing. Either way its our love of the outdoors and/or knives that brought us here, so the commonality is what should be emphasized not the differences. Just my 2 cents.

I disagree with your remarks about the cliquish nature of the forum. You make it sound as though there is an 'in crowd' here that excludes outsiders and values web reportage more than wilderness experience. This has not been my experience here. New members are usually welcomed with open arms, and threads detailing interesting outings are one of the best features of the forum. Trip report threads give the rest of us a chance to vicariously enjoy experiences that we wouldn't normally have. I would love to see some pictures of your 18-state excursion, but if you don't have any or don't want to share, that's fine too. Where this business about 'cred' comes from, I'm not sure.

Anyway, you say 'clique', I say 'open and vibrant community of outdoors enthusiasts'. But, to each his own.

All the best,

- Mike

Yes... no cliques will be tolerated in W&SS... I ridicule everyone, equally.

I like hearing from new folks... watching Doc deteriorate into a babbling old man gets boring after a while... though its still fun at the moment.

Sounds to me your being a bit selfish, enjoying our pics, trip reports and reviews but not willing to share any of your own. 18 different states and thousands of pics, quit bogarting them, lets see some and here some reports. Chris

This has not been my experience here.

Key word "my"

New members are usually welcomed with open arms

"Usually"

I would love to see some pictures of your 18-state excursion, but if you don't have any.

Let me see some of your family vacation photos. Some people are private by nature.

All the best,

- Mike
