Ways to get ripped off on Ebay

A seller of a (ANY mechanical item) folding knife who says "The pictures are my description" is a walk-away.
Nailed it. Thanks.

I purchase and refurbish mechanical stopwatches and occasional pocket watches. If it doesn't run, that's not unusual. But....the ONE thing which is nearly unrepairable is the main balance wheel pivot. If that's out it's DONE. Please tell us. It's an easy determination.

Watch sellers carefully neglect this important info with the 'photos tell the story' bullshit line. Nuh uhhhh!

eBay is an auction. Auctions are always risky.

In the recent years there have become many many other ways to buy and sell online. While at the same time the dishonest sellers and thieving buyers have explored the options and honed their tactics to steal with impunity.

I would still use eBay to buy low stakes unusual items that are hard to find but I wouldn't buy anything with real value and I wouldn't sell on there either.

For many items, even EXPENSIVE ones it's a great venue. I just purchased a 'used' Samsung S10 Plus. It had one minor nick in the outer shell. Barely noticeable. Described as B+ condition. Yup.

Bought from a reputable seller of such items and saved over $300 from 'new'. You can't find this type of deal anywhere else.

I do try to avoid Ebay, because usually what I am looking for I can get on Bladeforums from members (-it is much easier to check a person's interactions on Bladeforums, look at where they participate etc).

Iv definitely been sold items on Bladeforums that I never, ever would have purchased if there had been accurate photos!

I've bought custom knives that look like a drunk orangutan made them while also eating a pile of bananas and doing cocaine..

Two knives from the same maker, but bought second hand. No mention of grinds so wonky that Dr. Seuss would be impressed....when contacted, the seller indicated they were bought when the maker was brand new to support a new maker...put away and not really looked at again.

He did offer immediate refunds and asked how to make it right. That was about all I needed. I told him the offer was enough to satisfy me. Spent hours fixing the grind lines I could by hand. I have a few customs that I will likely never be sold to another person with out a whole lot of color photos from every angle and a very descriptive post including "you would have to be crazy to buy this"

Well, in two decades of conducting mostly smooth and uneventful business on Ebay, this is a first.

I just got a message from a seller stating a request EXACTLY like what the OP received ( JDRanger JDRanger ). Late last night, I bought a rare knife on Ebay and the seller contacted me a few minutes ago and said:

"I've got someone writing me saying it's you, and is asking to send it to another place because their sister is ill and that's where they will be. Please call me at XXXXXXXXXX..."

So, I just got off the phone with the seller... we had a good chuckle/vent about it and all is good (guy has great feedback, as do I). So glad for us both he didn't fall for that crap. We are both going to contact Ebay.

*** BUYER/SELLER BEWARE ***

The fraudster's Ebay username is bonyb-31 with zero feedback.

The name and address he provided the seller is:

AMIRAN MIKUTISHVILI
8 McCullough Drive
U147110
New Castle DE 19726

I bought and paid for 8 of the same item. Seller only shipped 1. The seller had proof of delivery and eBay sides with them. PayPal sides with them. My credit card sides with them. I lost my money.

Use AMEX.

That looks like a Drop Ship Address:

AMIRAN MIKUTISHVILI
8 McCullough Drive

New Castle DE 19726

It is. Name is different, but that industrial strip center has been linked to fraud involving tax evasion, embezzlement, and international shipping scams. The New Castle PD is aware.

.

Check the shipment weight vs item weight? Sometimes you have to push back harder to get whats right.

With Ebay/Paypal, did you file it as an item not received, or significantly not as described? For not received, all they look at is the delivery confirmation

Ebay is easily one of my favorite websites. Been using it for 10 years, have over 1100 feedback. The amount of stuff you can get is just so varied. Just this past week I've bought a few posters, a book, a record, and a dvd.

I almost never use auctions, and I've had almost zero issues selling on there. Anytime someone complains about Ebay I know they've either not paid attention and had a bad experience or just dont use it and have no clue how it works.

Now amazon, theres a site I never use. Its purely a convience thing, as almost everything on amazon can be found cheaper on separate sites.

The seven items where $1 each. So I pushed it as far as I could without going crazy. It was clear nobody was listening to my side. Chinese seller, said he shipped the replacements, but it was just a stalling tactic. 30 days to ship the first time. Then a 30 more for him to respond. Quickly eats up the window to file a claim.

Had a few issues over the years with eBay. Mostly scammers back in the day before tracking and insurance. I have had much worse dealings on forums selling and buying.

I take good pictures when I sell and don’t buy unless the picture are unique and high quality. eBay is the same way and have been good for the last 10 years.

Ebay is awesome, I never do the auctions although I have in the past bought cheap jewelry trinkets for the wife that way, I figure 39 cents and free shipping a few times a year for a smile is a good bargain and it also got me out of going to get the mail, mostly. :D
For items we need or want that cost actual money ( $5+ ), I always click "US Seller, Free shipping, Buy it now". Then I check the feedback, If I see the gold star and a zillion feedback that's a good sign although for rarer items I'll often take a chance if the feedback looks good. Never had a problem with Ebay but you couldn't get me to order something off Wish if it were free. Got screwed there twice, not for anything big but twice was enough.
