We are bored with S30V

I'd like to see more Elmax. Marfione and Olamic are really the one big names that use it as a primary steel.

I have nothing bad to say about S30V ... I prefer S35VN slightly ... I actually prefer CPM154 over both ... and I like the M390 that I have tried ... but anything more exotic to me is not worth the cost to performance ratio ...

I still love 52100 and 5160 and 1095 ... and Sandvik steels and VG10 work great for most of my uses ...

I have just gotten a few 3v or D3V and haven't had enough time to truely form an opinion ... and I understand there are steels that do this or that better then some average steel ... but these "average steels" were the super steels not so long ago ...

and I've come to the point of dinishing returns with S35VN ... M390 ... and D3V and most of my knives would be considered lesser steels but they do an excellent job for my uses ...

So I guess I'm good buying what some consider boring steels ... and save a bit of money and save on sharpening time and equipment when I get no real benefit paying more for a bit more edge retention or strength ... I have sharpening equipment and pry bars if I need that.

S30V is the least boring of the blade steels, it takes me so long to hand sharpen, who has time to be bored.

S30V is a great steel. Realistically most users would not need anything else. It's a great steel and designed for cutlery. What's not to like about it?

Give it a few more years and people will be saying how CTS-XHP, M390, S110V, etc., are boring and underperforming steels.

I find myself preferring S30V over S110V, as it's easier to deal with, IMO. I do like S35Vn a bit over S30V, but to me the difference isn't that big, and it could be the individual knives themselves rather than the steel. I still like VG-10. I have also never felt bored with the steel in my SAKs.

I am sitting on my S-60, S-90, S-110, and S-125 waiting for S-150 to go into production. Sold a lot of my S-30 stuff.

not many steels i dont care for. most have a place and use. i dont dislike s30v at all, and im not bored with it as a cutlery steel. works well for knife applications i use it for.

that said xhp i prefer as well, but if knife i want comes in s30v it doesn't stop me from owning or using it. i also dont frown if a knife comes in s30v. i see no real advantage that i notice one way or the other on s35vn over s30v.

It's not so much any steel varieties I dislike, it's more about the heat treat, geometry and a proper grind for me.
It's a lot to ask that I get a blade suited to my specific tastes but I've seen some abominations in obtuse grinds, excessive thickness behind the edge, and poor heat treatment.
I can see it and I'm the end user not a knife manufacturer.
If they can't figure it out maybe it's time to tighten things up and get back to basics.

No, we are not. Perhaps the OP is more interested in the concept of knives than the use of knives. That is fine, but really, for pocket knives, and I have no fixed blades in S30v, it is a really good steel.

I have better steels, but if I like the knife and want to use that knife? Tchach! You, sir, are suffering from ennui.

Hell, I'm not even bored with VG10 yet, much less S30V. Its a steel that I've had good results with the newest steels arent really a selling point for me anymore. I'm drawn to new designs and really, VG 10 upwards still holds my interest.

Bored how? The truth is, the typical knife owners' EDC tasks are limited to opening the occasional UPS package or grocery parcel. Heavy use would be considered sectioning a cardboard box after buying a washer and dryer. 440C or any Crmov steel would be fine. Most knife owners will never even come close to utilizing all of the properties of a super steel and probably not even 440c for that matter.

I'm not a fan of "some" of these newer super steels if they don't sharpen up with a reasonable amount of effort on a strop. Heck, I still like 154cm & cpm154.

Seriously. How many of us even slightly think about what bring “bored” with a blade steel might even mean? Not many, I’ll wager.

I have a Benchmade 162 on the way. No experience with one yet, but if a function bushcraft knife can be made out of S30V at blade stock thickness basically at what ZT uses on their folders, I find that pretty impressive honestly.

Something to add to that question, how much would everybody be willing to pay more for an upgraded steel on the same knife. Let's say a fictional knife so brand loyalty doesn't come into play. The basic version comes in whatever lock type you prefer, has a typical construction overall, good fit and finish and good ergos. Version 1 costs 125$ and has S30V Steel, Version 2 has an upgraded steel be it M390/20CV or equivalent of your choice. Everything else about the knife is identical. Same lock, same handle material, same lock type. How much of a premium would you be willing to shell out if any?

$50. I’m thinking that’s about the price bump I would pay if/when the Mantra 3 sprint runs happen.

Man oh man... when I saw the title I knew there'd be a ton of responses. I agree with most of what's been said too :D

but yeah, this. Vg 10 still impresses me, and I look at it as the "gate keeper" of super steels
