We need to come up with more extreme contests

No problem with the monthly drawings and regular contests, but building a shelter on a day-trip or taking a picture of pristine RAT knives is getting kinda old and boring, don't you think?

I envision someone taking a RAT knife (or someone else's knife) and a pocket survival kit (and I do mean "pocket") into the wilds for 3 days with nothing else except the clothes on their back and seeing what they can come up with as far as surviving, or not :D Of course they would have to take a camera and keep a journal, and we would have to take them on their word that they're playing by the rules. In fact, we would have to come up with the rules before we start this RAT Tough Man competition.

My point is everyone always talks about "survival" but they end up taking everything but the kitchen sink with them when they're playing with their knives.

Feel free to offer any other contest ideas that would be a more extreme than what we've been doing. I'm sure we can come up with a lot of good prizes for a new contest. I would even be willing to interview the winner for an upcoming story in one of the magazines.

Make sure they tell someone where they're going, so if they don't survive, we can retrieve the diary and learn from what they did wrong! :D

It really wouldn't matter if they do this close to civilization as long as they didn't cheat and use something outside the rules. In actuality, in this climate no one is going to die from three days of exposure even if they don't do anything as long as they drink some water, but the point would be to build as much as possible with as little as possible during the 3 days.

Wish I could actually take three days off from work to try it! I'd be all set in my area--I'm surrounded by National Park and know where to find water, shelter, etc. And while they're not the most exciting fare there are tons of cat-tails about for sustenance. :D

Again, this would not be about "just making it" instead it would be about who can do the most with the least for 3 days. I think we would also have to have detail note taking and photos as a portion of the overall judging.

I'm down. Let me ponder on what the pocket kit should consist of and I'll definitely enter.

ETA: Since my only RAT at the moment is an Izula, would it be OK for me to use another, slightly larger, knife?

Sounds like an awesome contest, that I could never take part in :grumpy:

I would, however, love to see the entries of such a contest

How about something where you can actually stay inside at night? Anything with that requirement would get my vote, regardless of what else is involved ;) Understand I'm not a wuss, just can't stay outside when sleeping and don't have a car/truck/camper.

Any knife would be fine. In fact, once we get our contestants we may front them RC-6 knives to use for the test. We just have to come up with a set of rules for this and limit how many contestants.

Monsterdog, Sorry but there is no way we would run a real survival contest and let people go home every night to their own bed, a camper or even a sleeping bag. Sorry, dude.

The rules should definitely include a packing list. My interpretation of "pocket" and someone else's might differ. A standardized list would help.

If i may suggest a broading of the rules to not exclude knives of the non-RAT make. Not to take away from the knife itself, i just dont own one so i am unable to enter most of these contests. But if i were eligable i would get out there with a butterknife and tear shit up to win my own RAT, now from that point on beware im on the hunt with primo tools! :D Just something to consider.
Thank you
RAT PACK # 31!!!!

It will have to be run on the honor system since there is no way for us to verify whether the contestant is playing by the rules. But, as you all have noticed, we pretty much have the creme of the crop when it comes to an honorable customer base ;)

Just remember, LIMITED gear. If we are going to write this in a magazine then it HAS to be all about the knife and maybe a few tools that will fit in an Altoids tin. NOTHING else. Does NOT have to be a RAT knife.

We may get some of our dealers to kick in prizes for this contest also. RAT will definitely be down for one of our comprehensive survival kits and one of our pocket E&E kits, as well as the RC-6 that the participant is using.

Sounds cool, I'd like to get the skinny on all the rules, i.e., what is allowed or not, and as CRR said what defines a pocket kit.

Does NOT have to be a RAT knife.

:D:D:D:D:D:D
I am extremely excited about this, thank you and I can’t wait to get a final on the rules. I am in for sure.
