I apologize for being so blunt about this. I guess my experiences have led me to understand that you can't control a lot of things and you just have to roll with the flow. Maybe we're stupid, but we've been so far away from civilization so many times without any way of getting our asses out except days of hiking or rafting down a log jammed jungle tributary on makeshift rafts. The main things that worry me are hot snake bites and unexpected medical issues (heat related problems, heart attack, femur break severing femoral artery, etc). In the areas we go, if that ever happens then the victim is most likely going to die simply because we have no surefire way of getting them quickly to primary care. We explain that to everyone who goes on our trips. And its not bullshit or trying to make the trip sound all spooky. Dying is a REAL possibility if something goes seriously sideways. So, when we are talking about 3 days in the States with cell phone coverage and a lot quicker response time using PLBs (you're lucky to get some of the folks in Latin America to even respond to a signal), then I figure you can go lay by a creek for 3 days and not move, and survive as long as no snake decides to crawl over and bite you or some other medical issue pops up.
The more I think about this whole contest, the more I'm seeing it was a bad idea. I think we should just back away from the whole concept because it's getting way too complicated and I can see that without good controls then it's a real liability potential for us. So, if someone wants to do this on their own with whatever gear they see fit to use, then go ahead and do it without our blessings. We are canceling any and all participation in this, pulling the list of rules and locking the thread. This contest is canceled.
Onward!
