Don't we?.....

A quote from Mr Sal Glesser, originally posted on Spyderco's own forum on the 5th April 2003 (I hope its ok to post it here...):
"Hi Steve. We're considering a short run in another color. Gray is the current first choice of color. We've also decided that the design is a very functional design, but the name is lacking so we're looking for a new name.
The design seems to appeal more to the interested and experienced knife user, of which there are fewer ELUs.

The name should describe the user as well as the design (aficianado, expert, anal retentive, obsessive compuslive knife nut, refined design, etc.) And most important, it cannot have already been used by another knife company (so it can be trademarked).

We have a few ideas at the moment. Do you have any good ideas?"

I suggest the Spyderco Adept
Adept adjective, Very skilled or able.
Adept noun, A person who is very skilled at something

I liked the old name, but I like the design more than the name so I'm willing to take a stab. My favorite would be an obscure reference to an old master swordsman, "McBane". Donald McBane was a master of a fencing school/brothel, professional duelist, and exhibition duelist in Britain and Belgium around 1700. He had vast practical knowledge of using blades in real confrontations. A little of his biography can be found in "The Art and History of Personal Combat" by Hope. Some more can be found in this link:
http://www.woodenswords.com/WMA/reviews_galicswordsmanship.htm

He wrote a book called, "A Fighting Gentleman's Companion" that is a classic.

I like his name because it sounds a little like Macbeth (In which a dagger figures conspicously), and a little like wolfbane from the werewolf movies.

All this is may be too obscure for the masses. You might just try "Wolfbane" or, currently trendy, "Wolverine". What with the current popularity of wolves you might try the giant prehistoric wolf, "Dire Wolf". If you think that the blade is two small for a full fledged wolf name you might try a smaller relative, like a Grey Fox.

I also think that there is something cat-like about the subtlety of the Calypso Junior design. I think of something like a Lynx, Ocelot, or leopard.

Calypso Jr. S30-V. G-10. Ti liners. Excuse me while I go expectorate this mouth full of drool.

The Calypso Jr. (Micarta) is my favorite knife of all time. Seriously! A super charged version is too much to evn hope for...
I am afraid to jinx it. I would buy several. Can I put it a vote for either Ivory Micarta scales or if it has to be FRN how about Burgandy? Is this in response to the D2 knife question Sal posted? D2 would be awesome.

But i'll take one certainly! Put me down for one! In FRN or Micarta or G-10. I want a light handle material like those, with grip to use for EDC.

Wait...I'll come up with a name right now... ummm.... how bout... Spyder?? It's simple and tactical buyers will think it sounds cool or something... Or how bout... the EMYUB?? :p

Over the years there have been a lot of models named after birds, or related to them (Merlin, Hawkbill, Kiwi, Dodo...Dragonfly ;) )
For the Calypso Jr. a medium-sized, not-too-goofy-looking, non-raptor seems appropriate.
Sparrow...
Blackbird...
Cardinal.
(I wouldn't mind having a knife called a Penguin or Dove, but that might not be the direction you're looking for!)

Oddly, I don't think any Spydies are actually named after spiders.
Looking up some spider names, I can see why: there are "garden spiders", "house spiders", "wolf spiders" (OK, that might work for some other model). "Daddly longlegs" would just be silly.

But there is a spider called the "golden silk spider".
The new Calypso Jr. could be called the Silk.
How appropriate for the Calypso Jr.

I always like carbon fiber myself.

OK, since this idea is borne of the internet, and needs a trendy moniker, we could call it:

The Spyderco 1337

As in "leet" as in "elite". Us geeky connoisseurs who want a special run.

Don't know what I'm talking about? Be thankful.
In 1337 speak: "5pyd3rc0 Ru|35!"

Sal,
If you're out there tell us what you think. Can this become a reality?

Btw, I really like John's idea of using a bird's name. Especially Blackbird. Throw on a black handle and this would be cool as all hell. ( FRN, Micarta, G-10, in black though.)

I had three pictures here of digitally modified Calypso Jrs. They were hosted at http://www.thephotostation.net/
The pictures were censored from the site by a moderator with these comments...

"Appalling
This is not a joke.
As I'm going through the forums, I'm finding pictures of weapons, knives, guns etc. Now this may be acceptable where you come from, but this is a PHOTOGRAPHY site.
Originally, I believed deletion of images was all we needed. However, it may be that tracking, reporting and handing over to the authorities is more in order. I suggest, for your own good, DELETE YOUR IMAGES NOW, unless you want us to attend to them for you. It's a risk you dont need to take, friends."

I immediately asked to be removed from membership of that site. What blind unreasoning fear and intimidation.

Well its being brought back from the dead and the scales a Gray.So "Gray Ghost"

I don't know.....I kinda like the name "Savant". It just seems kind of fitting for a gentleman's type knife. Plus "Spyderco Savant" just sorta rolls off of the tongue!:D

Flinx

How about gray-green translucent handles?

How about Banshee, phantom or specter for a name?

- Frank

"Savant" is good. Maybe "Turtledove," since it's in keeping with the bird theme, rolls off the tongue, and doesn't sound scary? Besides turetledoves are gray, right? Instead of FRN try going with that new gray G-10!!!! That would look so awesome!

Or how about "Cormorant"?

Mine looks sorta like a toucan.;) Do we win one if you use our name?
Gary<---namer of the spydie toucan.

The Cardinal sounds great. It's a bird, it's a rule, it's a person of religious stature and authority...

...It's a Spyderco!

How bout, Pheonix, since it's being" brought back to life" or maybe Starling would be another one. Just bring it back, PLEASE !! With G-10,micarta,carbon fiber, whatever... :)
