Phoenix is very cool. I didn't think about legendary bird names.

(Maybe "Roc" can go to one of the big knives some time.) :D
 
Heh, cool names, but it sounded like Sal was looking for a name that would reach out and grab you by the cajones and say, "Buy me! I'm a cool knife!" My fave spyderco design ever deserves nothing less :)

The blade is vaguely shaped like a shark's tooth. Call it the Mako or something. "The Spyderco Mako is named after the fastest shark in the sea, and the razor-sharp blade is shaped like a shark's tooth to <blah blah blah> goes through your mail like a shark's tooth going through a surfer <blah blah blah>." If we're talking about the zytel version, it's even got fish-scale sides, so it all fits. Name it after some cool predatory fish and you're there.

Joe - Case already has (or had) the "Mako", but I think the fish scales and "tooth" idea sounds like its on the right track.

How about "Manta Ray"?

I personally would like "Silver Surfer". Do some cross-maketing with Marvel Comics to get the rights.
 
I like "Barracuda". Like a shark, but shinier and pointier.

Camillus has a "CUDA" line but I don't think that would be a problem.

Generally I don't go for the Spyderco lockbacks, but if this one can get made with anything other than unlined FRN I'll bite.

Sal, this is one is a masterpiece. You got everything right and it all came to gether in the Calypso. Jr. You have always gone to efficiency and this one goes the furthest. The design is just to good not to have another run.

Do it high end but don't change the design. Leave the clip placement where it is. Change only the blade steel and handle material.
 
I like the fish idea.The fish scale scales would really go with this idea.I bet there isn't another knife co. with the name megaladon(sp?)or maybe zambizie(sp?)

There's a Zambezi already, and a custom maker using megaladon. There's a tigershark, 'cuda, and I now know there's a Mako. Might be harder than I thought to find a predatory fish that's not taken! Thresher, sandbar, sand tiger, bull, I'm sure there's one out there.

I like the "Sparrow" name that someone suggested earlier. The knife kind of reminds me of a sparrow; sort of small and unassuming. There was even a great calypso musician named the Mighty Sparrow.
 
There are alot of tropical fish names.Tiger Barb,Chiclid,Tetra...or with grey scales and grey shark isn't taken.
 
You could always try combining names and making you own species.

How about 'sparrow shark'

I never was good with words. Where's java when you need him :)

How about naming it simply "X"? Spyderco "X". First, it sounds like "ex", because it's an ex model. Second, there are so many cool things with this particle added: Mazda FX, Widows XP, XXX the movie aso.
 
I personally really like the imagery of the Phoenix for this knife's rebirth. You could even do some kind of stylized phoenix pattern in the handle surface instead of the fish scale patterns that were on the Calypso. You could even have some kind of color gradient throught the FRN of the handle to match the stylized bird pattern. I gotta stop... I sure as heck hope that the Calypso Jr. is reborn! S30V or VG10 would be great!
 
It's a perfectly good word, but it always makes me think of "idiot savant", like Rain Man.
I'd still buy it. :)

This may be the best Spyderco ever, IMO, and I'd definitely buy another.
Even the clip being on the wrong end doesn't bother me, just please don't put a stinking wire one on it.

A run of the large Calypso...now that would be :cool:
 
I like the name "Calypso Jr.", but if the name has to change, I like Phoenix. I would not change anything in the design. It is perfect as is. just go with VG-10 or S30V steel and PLEASE do some with Black or White micarta handles. I'll buy some.
