We were all new here once

You're welcome.

I see two of your photos (in the other thread), but I don't know how your posting them without using the BBcode, that is a mystery to me. But if it works it works. You should be able to post multiple photos in the same post. You just have to insert each one separately.
Thanks again
It was kind of a pain in the butt but ! i guess at my age and lack of tech. skills it's a sign of the times ! things to come ?
So you only saw 2 images ? did you get the over all shot ?
blade very shinny almost chrome like ?
i guess i'm not following this multiple thread thing either ? oh well ? but the direct link code works ?? go figure
sometimes poking around works ! sometimes it really messes me up ! this time it worked ?
Thanks again appreciate your help ! Rick

I don't mean to be preachy, but those of us who have been here awhile know that sometimes new members don't always receive much in the way of patience and understanding. Sometimes it's easy to jump on those who are new to knives, know less than we do, or simply have different tastes in knives. Sometimes criticism comes a little too easy on internet forums.

Remember that we were all new to knives once, we didn't know anything. And if we were lucky someone with a generous amount of patience and understanding was willing to take the time to teach us, even if it meant pushing their patience and understanding to the limit.

How many of us can say that every knife purchase we made was a smart one. How many of us at some point have bought a knife simply because we thought it was "cool", or "tactical", etc. How many of us have bought knives from questionable companies with silly marketing. I doubt that any here are perfect.

In my humble opinion, this forum should be about more than personal entertainment, it should also be a place to provide guidance to those who are new to this "hobby", even if that means exerting a bit more patience and understanding. After all, how would we want to be treated if we were new here? In the end, we can teach new members a lot more with patience and understanding than with insults and criticism.

Of course, if you've been here a while then you better have thick skin, because you're fair game ;).

Just my thoughts.

UPDATE: It's been over 8 years since I started this thread, and I thought it was time for an update.

When I started this thread back in 2012, new members were sometimes treated a bit rough. But things have changed since then. These days most active members are eager to help new members. So I don't want you to get the impression that you're entering a lions den where the members are just waiting to bite your head off. I think you'll find the vast majority of members to be friendly and helpful. So welcome, and enjoy :).
Thank you for your service and time to this, I’m new here and I hope to learn more about knifemaking.

Hi all! I’m also new here. I’m trying to search but I’m finding that I don’t know enough vocabulary to know what I’m searching for.

Basically, I want a knife in M390 steel that has a handle similar to my Gerber Strongarm, but i don’t even know enough about the design of the handle to know what words to search for. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

If you could describe what it is you like about the Strongarm handle, it might be easier to track down. Do you like the shape, contour, texture, pommel, material, etc

First let me apologize for this answer that is probably more confusing than explanatory. I like that it grips well but Im not certain if its because of the material or the shape of the handle. Something about the shape just fits my hand well though I don’t know what the shape is, but i know that i like the symmetry of it. I think the shape of the pommel helps with that too, but I don’t know if there are “shapes” of pommels.

Nothing to apologize for at all. Sometimes a knife just ‘fits’ our hand. I do not have a Strongarm, but they are very popular so I am sure a member will chime in about this.

More people will see your question and you're more likely to get answers if you start a new thread here in "General Discussion". To start a new thread in any particular sub-forum click on the orange "Post thread" button that appears in the upper right hand corner on the first page of that sub-forum.

This thread is really just a "Welcome" thread for new members to introduce themselves and ask questions about how to navigate the forum :) .

Haven’t been here for a while partly because Imgur no longer worked for image hosting and don’t know what else to use.
I’d be happy to become a paid gold member, does that mean you attain the ability to just post images directly here here straight from your device? I’ve been a member of Glock Talk forum for over 20 years and you have always been able to post pics direct from your device so I’m thinking similar to that.

I don’t even know if this is the right place to be asking this. Plus I thought there used to be a place to test posting images here, is that still around somewhere?

But anyway, mostly want to be sure that a gold membership allows direct posting without using some outside hosting site.

Thanks much!

You can post pictures directly until it is decided that you can't, as previously happened.

Yes, you can post directly from your computer as a Gold member or higher. I just posted these pictures directly from my computer.

To do this-

1. Click on the little picture icon ("insert image") at the top of the posting box, it's between the chain links icon and the smiley face (pointed at by the red arrow in the first pic). a "Drop Image" box will appear.

2. Click on that "Drop Image" box to open the picture files in your computer.

3. Double click the picture in your computer that you want to post and it will appear in your post.

Of course you'll want to size the pics appropriately. I like to keep the height of my pics between 400 and 600. Any bigger than that and people might have to scroll up and down to see all of it. The pics in this post are 400 and 450 high.

I don't understand why Imgur won't work for you. It works for me. But perhaps I'll switch to just using my computer seeing as how easy it is. I was using Imgur long before I became a paying member and just kept using it out of habit.

Feel free to use your post in this thread to practice posting pictures. Just use the post edit feature.

Just the Imgur link showed up. I’ll try again.

Mostly all I see on Imgur is dopey memes. Is it just 14 year old kids on there?

When I tried to edit this post, at first an image was there then it went away. Arrg

Thanks I’ve been trying Imgur again, don’t think it’s working right for me, or I’m definitely not doing something right. Not working how I remembered.

Beat me, Whip me, call me dirty names.

So I guess ya want to know about me. In 1970, I got my driver's license, went to Jimi Hendrix's house, and forged my first blade from a file.
Did martial arts since I was 11, Sword since I was 50.
I only want the best blades I can afford, because if I have to use them, I want to be able to trust my life to them.
I spent the 70s-90s in Army. I carried a Gerber MKII until it broke on a rib bone. The I went to a Buck Master first gen. Some one offered me 3x what I paid for it.
Lastly I used a Ontario Raider Bowie. When I retire in 92 I gave it to my little sister for S&R work.
Now I carry a DGW Searle's Bowie, and it is the nattiest sharp metal next to my katana which is made from the same steel as the bowie, but is a folded blade, where the bowie is not.
Since the law changes here is washingrad, I have to build a big bowie for my truck.
Thats why I am here. Its been decades since Ive made a knife, so Im here to learn.

and to figure why I cant find the avatar and signature line in the preferences.
So someone PM me and tell me Im a blind ole man.
