We were all new here once

I figure it's about time I make a post other than replying to something in the exchange section. My name is Rick, and I am addicted to knives! My wife made me say that btw ... I wasn't really into knives as a kid or growing up, and recently turned into a knife enthusiast ... like the last 2 year :) Anyway, my buddy Andrew (Fantatic Edge) sold me my first custom knife, and I instantly fell in love with yet another expensive hobby (guns is the other). My wife says I have an addiction to expensive hobbies, but she forgets Disney trips are way more expensive than knives (we live in NW Florida). Anyway, in the last 2 years I have amassed a Pelican 1300 full of knives and getting ready to start filling a 1450. I've been lurking around here for a couple weeks (I think), and finally decided to upgrade my account simply because there is a lot of good information and nice people to help us new guys to expand our knowledge base. I'm not sure what my true purpose here is, but I am sure over the next few months I will figure something out :)

Ciao for Now,
Rick

Good for you Rick BCane98 BCane98 on your Gold Membership upgrade. You’ve got a lot of perks that come with that Gold too, you’ll be amazed at the different doors it’s going open for you.

You can always start out with a picture post in the thread EDC XIII Which Knife or Knives are you carrying today? It’s right here in this same General Knife Discussion (GKD). The pages fill fast, usually 3-4 each day, but a truly vast expanse of everybody’s EDC is on display along with just tons of eye candy too.

Join on in wherever you wish, I’m sure you will fit right in and be given a warm welcome.

Looking forward to see you out there my friend.

Regards,

UPS

hey, i'm flash - more of an honorary newbie, since i was here briefly in 2007, but the pivot screw on my crkt m16-13z (my EDC for a decade) fell out. it prompted me to see what was new in the knife world.

wow.

i bought a half-dozen knives since, mostly low- to mid-end folders (is mid-end a word??) including several button locks with flat blades. This includes a BenchMade Super Freek (which was an eye-opener, tho' not in the Luis Bunuel / Salvador Dali _Un Chien Andalou_ eye-opening sense). the freek spoiled me for cheep folders.

i look forward to wasting ti-- i mean, learning a lot from this platform. see you in the forums, or you might say "i'll keep an eye out for ya . . ."😲;)

is having images hosted off-site still a thing? i didn't realize it, and uploaded several so far, w/o comment, in the EDC topic..

please advise & i'll start hosting off-site. sorry for messing up.

Gold members don't need to use a photo hosting site.

I don't know how Gold members can post pics because I've never been a Gold member.

If you are unable to figure out how to post pics as a Gold member you should ask in the Tech Support subforum here- https://www.bladeforums.com/forums/tech-support-general-q-a-site-feedback-more.679/ :)

No mess-up! If you’re a paid member, when you compose a message, you’ll have the insert photo option in the message tool bar, right next to the insert link button. Depending on what device and OS you’re on, tap that photo button, and you can either drag-and-drop a photo from a file manager window, or tap a number of options to grab a photo from, including a local image file or photo library. The forum software pretty much does the rest. You can also insert an image from the web by just copying it from another web page and pasting it into your message. Free members still need to link from an image hosting site.

Hello all!
I’ve been carrying knives since I was to young to be carrying knives.
That doesn’t mean I know anything about them, I judge by look & feel.
Im looking forward to learning a boat load!

Hello everyone,

I've been a long time user of knives (butter, steak, bread...). My first edc was the Mora Basic 546, as it was cheap, tough and Mora (quality). It is stainless because of my proximity to the ocean. I wanted a starter knife that I didn't care about. Smash and thrash it around, baton and pry, and learn what knives don't like. Wanted to test the partial tang, as a lot of people suggest full tang is better. My partial tang has not compromised over the 7 years I've had it, so I'm starting to think partial vs. full is more status than functionality. But what do I know, I was only a Mora user.

Just received my Leatherman Surge. I love it, although a little heavy. Needs a case that just holds the Surge tight and close to my body. I don't know why people want to add bit extenders, bits, ratchets, extra saws, ferro rods... on the same sheath. I'd rather have quick access to my Surge and another clip for extras (if needed).

Anyway, my knife needs future attachments. I was thinking of using the blade exchanger for adding new abilities (unless the main action is to push, then I'll use the bit driver).
Scalpel
Gut Hook (although the bottle/can opener may be modified)
Chisel (although the big flat head may be modified)
Gouge (bit driver)
Scorp (bit driver)
More to be dreamed up!

Anyway, I can't wait to see what this forum offers.

Later,
Yonut

I don't mean to be preachy, but those of us who have been here awhile know that sometimes newbies don't always receive much in the way of patience and understanding. Sometimes it's easy to jump on those who are new to knives, know less than we do, or simply have different tastes in knives. Sometimes criticism comes a little too easy on internet forums.

Remember that we were all new to knives once, we didn't know anything. And if we were lucky someone with a generous amount of patience and understanding was willing to take the time to teach us, even if it meant pushing their patience and understanding to the limit.

How many of us can say that every knife purchase we made was a smart one. How many of us at some point have bought a knife simply because we thought it was "cool", or "tactical", etc. How many of us have bought knives from questionable companies with silly marketing. I doubt that any here are perfect.

In my humble opinion, this forum should be about more than personal entertainment, it should also be a place to provide guidance to those who are new to this "hobby", even if that means exerting a bit more patience and understanding. After all, how would we want to be treated if we were new here? In the end, we can teach newbies a lot more with patience and understanding than with insults and criticism.

Of course, if you've been here a while then you better have thick skin, because you're fair game ;).

Just my thoughts.

UPDATE: It's been over 8 years since I started this thread, and I thought it was time for an update.

When I started this thread back in 2012, new members were sometimes treated a bit rough. But things have changed since then. These days most active members are eager to help new members. So I don't want you to get the impression that you're entering a lions den where the members are just waiting to bite your head off. I think you'll find the vast majority of members to be friendly and helpful. So welcome, and enjoy :).
I’m brand new to this forum, any forum for that matter, and just read this. That helps reduce my anxiety a little trying to figure out how to post my knife question. I’m also new to the knife collecting hobby. I married a “knifer” and have quickly come to love collecting knives and learning the history. The first gift he gave me when coming to see me, (reconnecting after 30 years), was a Victorinox Climber. I remember thinking that has to be the oddest, most bizarre gift I’ve ever received! 5 years later and I’m hooked! I’m not into a knife just because it’s an expensive one or because it’s necessarily useful in someway. I like the older, smaller knives, girlie knives I call them! 😊 So….I have a question on a G Schrade, B’Port, CT ball pull knife. Is there a particular place I’m supposed to ask my question? Again, I’m new to forums and how they work. Thanks for any help and your patience is greatly appreciated!

I’m with you on the noob thing. I’ve been in on one other forum since it’s inception in ‘16 as the product was new to the market. I grew with the forum as knowledge of the product grew. This is a different format too. Researching thousands of posts over years is impossible.
But, I always loved knives. One of my favorites cost me $10 new. I’m sure there’s a place here for me, and you too. Guides will emerge, familiarity with the good, bad and the ugly will emerge, and someday we’ll “know the ropes”, look back and smile at the wreckage we caused!
