We were all new here once

I’m brand new to this forum, any forum for that matter, and just read this. That helps reduce my anxiety a little trying to figure out how to post my knife question. I’m also new to the knife collecting hobby. I married a “knifer” and have quickly come to love collecting knives and learning the history. The first gift he gave me when coming to see me, (reconnecting after 30 years), was a Victorinox Climber. I remember thinking that has to be the oddest, most bizarre gift I’ve ever received! 5 years later and I’m hooked! I’m not into a knife just because it’s an expensive one or because it’s necessarily useful in someway. I like the older, smaller knives, girlie knives I call them! 😊 So….I have a question on a G Schrade, B’Port, CT ball pull knife. Is there a particular place I’m supposed to ask my question? Again, I’m new to forums and how they work. Thanks for any help and your patience is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Bladeforums Laura.

In the blue banner along the top of the screen you'll see the white "Forums" button. If you click on that button you will see a directory of Bladeforums showing all the different sub-forums. I'm not sure what type of information you're looking for regarding the knives you mentioned, but there is a "Traditional's" sub-forum for "older" styles of knives, and an auto/switchblade forum for those types of knives if any of those knives are automatics.

And then there is always "General" discussion where you can ask any knife-related question. If you post a question in the wrong sub-forum a Moderator can always move it to a more appropriate sub-form.

I’m with you on the noob thing. I’ve been in on one other forum since it’s inception in ‘16 as the product was new to the market. I grew with the forum as knowledge of the product grew. This is a different format too. Researching thousands of posts over years is impossible.
But, I always loved knives. One of my favorites cost me $10 new. I’m sure there’s a place here for me, and you too. Guides will emerge, familiarity with the good, bad and the ugly will emerge, and someday we’ll “know the ropes”, look back and smile at the wreckage we caused!
I’ll be glad when I’m a little more accustomed to how it works. Getting ready to attempt my first question! This really is an awesome resource to learn. 😊

Hi all. New to the forum, not new to knives. Knife collecting has been an on-and-off again hobby for most of my lifetime. Also into handguns, ARs, and concealed carry. Looking forward to becoming part of the community here, and contributing what limited knowledge I can offer.
Cheers!

Hi everyone, im new and pretty inexperienced im the knife world but im eager and hope to learn from you all. 😊
Welcome to the forum. Lots of good information and very knowledgeable people here, not to mention some eye-watering collections. I’ve only been here a couple of months myself and have just barely scratched the surface.

Hi, I'm Carsten from Germany. (On Instagram "cintage.site")

About 25-30 years ago (yes, I'm that old!) I started a little knife collection, folders mainly. But at university money was a problem, so I did not continue.
Some weeks ago, I had to go through cancer therapy and - as we tend to get nostalgic in emotional times - I remembered my fascination for knives.
So, I resurrected my addiction. ;)
And after adding some beautiful models to my now growing collection, I found this forum. Happy to be amid equally crazy people. :)

Hi all, I'm Nick from Dallas. I've been in the knife collecting and swapping game for about 15 years now but for some reason kept putting off signing up here. Looks like you guys have an amazing community here and looking forward to being a part of it.

Cheers! 🍻

I actually just joined 3 mins ago, and I'm pretty young, new to both forums an knife making and I find it hard to talk online. thanks for the support!

I don't mean to be preachy, but those of us who have been here awhile know that sometimes newbies don't always receive much in the way of patience and understanding. Sometimes it's easy to jump on those who are new to knives, know less than we do, or simply have different tastes in knives. Sometimes criticism comes a little too easy on internet forums.

Remember that we were all new to knives once, we didn't know anything. And if we were lucky someone with a generous amount of patience and understanding was willing to take the time to teach us, even if it meant pushing their patience and understanding to the limit.

How many of us can say that every knife purchase we made was a smart one. How many of us at some point have bought a knife simply because we thought it was "cool", or "tactical", etc. How many of us have bought knives from questionable companies with silly marketing. I doubt that any here are perfect.

In my humble opinion, this forum should be about more than personal entertainment, it should also be a place to provide guidance to those who are new to this "hobby", even if that means exerting a bit more patience and understanding. After all, how would we want to be treated if we were new here? In the end, we can teach newbies a lot more with patience and understanding than with insults and criticism.

Of course, if you've been here a while then you better have thick skin, because you're fair game ;).

Just my thoughts.

UPDATE: It's been over 8 years since I started this thread, and I thought it was time for an update.

When I started this thread back in 2012, new members were sometimes treated a bit rough. But things have changed since then. These days most active members are eager to help new members. So I don't want you to get the impression that you're entering a lions den where the members are just waiting to bite your head off. I think you'll find the vast majority of members to be friendly and helpful. So welcome, and enjoy :).
Thanks for these kind words. Rookies need encouragement to become better and learn from the pro's. For me learning is an never ending process no matter start or end.

I'm new here but not to knives. I think my father also used to be a member but he kept his life so private I'll never know. His name was Mark L. He was into motorcycles, knives and guns. If anyone knew him please contact me.

Otherwise, I have bought some of the lousiest knives one can imagine when I was new. Thinking I was king on the block with my $40 AUS-8 CRKT. My neighbor was a knife wholesaler who introduced me to a casexx hells bells which I purchased and never looked back. I don't judge people for not knowing what cruible formed steel is because it's a niche to know these things not general knowledge. Anyway, new here read all the rules but if someone would like to give me tips im all ears Otherwise ill be lurking.
