We were all new here once

I don't mean to be preachy, but those of us who have been here awhile know that sometimes newbies don't always receive much in the way of patience and understanding. Sometimes it's easy to jump on those who are new to knives, know less than we do, or simply have different tastes in knives. Sometimes criticism comes a little too easy on internet forums.

Remember that we were all new to knives once, we didn't know anything. And if we were lucky someone with a generous amount of patience and understanding was willing to take the time to teach us, even if it meant pushing their patience and understanding to the limit.

How many of us can say that every knife purchase we made was a smart one. How many of us at some point have bought a knife simply because we thought it was "cool", or "tactical", etc. How many of us have bought knives from questionable companies with silly marketing. I doubt that any here are perfect.

In my humble opinion, this forum should be about more than personal entertainment, it should also be a place to provide guidance to those who are new to this "hobby", even if that means exerting a bit more patience and understanding. After all, how would we want to be treated if we were new here? In the end, we can teach newbies a lot more with patience and understanding than with insults and criticism.

Of course, if you've been here a while then you better have thick skin, because you're fair game ;).

Just my thoughts.

UPDATE: It's been over 8 years since I started this thread, and I thought it was time for an update.

When I started this thread back in 2012, new members were sometimes treated a bit rough. But things have changed since then. These days most active members are eager to help new members. So I don't want you to get the impression that you're entering a lions den where the members are just waiting to bite your head off. I think you'll find the vast majority of members to be friendly and helpful. So welcome, and enjoy :).
Good morning! I just joined this site because I have an old Slater Brothers deer antler knife and fork set set that I received as a gift. I am NOT looking to sell it or really even know its value. I was just curious about the history of the set. I hope I am not breaking any rules by asking.

Welcome to Bladeforums Ken4syth. You're not breaking any rules.

There is a sub-forum here at Bladeforums specifically for identifying and asking about the history of knives. It's the Bernard Levine sub-forum. To find it click on the white "Forums" button in the blue banner across the top of the screen, then click on the Bernard Levin Sub-forum, you can't miss it, it's just a few spots below the top.

Once in that sub-forum you can start your own thread by clicking on the orange box in the upper right corner of the screen that says "Post Thread". Then ask whatever you want to ask, other than dollar value, you need to be a Gold member or higher to ask for value.

Posting pictures of your set is a good idea, it might not be possible for members to provide you with any information without pictures. In order to post pictures at your membership level you need to use a photo hosting site like Imgur.com, and use the BBCode attached to each pic.

If you were a Gold member you could post pictures directly from your computer (more advantages of a paid membership). If you have any interest in reading more about becoming a Gold member, click on "Paid Subscriptions" in the blue banner. A Gold membership is $30 for one year.

I hope you enjoy your experience here, and I hope you learn more about you knife and fork set.

Hi All, after being a long time lurker I recently signed up. My love for knives started about 30 years ago after getting my first knife from my grandfather.
After that i've always had a few knifes and multitools laying around. After I bought the Benchmade Bugout about 1,5 year ago I fell face first into the rabbithole that's called knife collecting. I have about 40 knifes now and my most recent purchase and favorit is the Ferrum Forge Archbishop 3.0. My collection ranges from Kizer and WE knifes to Benchmade and Spyderco. Also got a few Boker, Bestech, Civivi, ESEE, Ferrum Forge and Olamic Cutlery. Very diverse ;-) One of my grail knives is the CKF Rotten which I hopefully am able to get my hands on one day :)

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the stimulus checks. Collecting knives again ultimately became my first choice. I've been buying knives made in each state. Medford (Arizona), CRK (Idaho) and so on. I began lurking here about a year and half ago to identify and learn about options. I've discovered that in order to get a knife from every state, I'd have to delve into the custom and small makers world. So, the process has slowed down quite quickly. Anyway, back to lurking...

That's a pretty cool way to focus a collection! Do you limit yourself to just 1 knife per state? Do you have any goals for collecting once you complete your 50?

It is impossible to limit myself 1 per state: California(Olamic. Pro-Tech), Idaho(Buck, CRK), Oregon(Benchmade, ZT)-as examples. It's more like one at a time and sort of taking turns.

I want to branch out into customs and small production knives. This will assist in collecting something from each state, I believe.

The goal: support American Made and just get quality knives. Yes, this an expensive endeavor!

Expand to North American and include some of the great folks north of the border too!😀

I am guilty of buying knives because they looked cool or everybody like them. I learned over time as to what I like and don't. It sure cost me a lot of money and as I sell them off I am not nearly getting what I had into them.

Hello All, I have always enjoyed knives but never considered myself a collector. I recently found some old autos that I purchased as a teenager stored in a box. Picked up more over time. Still have a lot to learn. Tks for this forum.

Welcome LakeCo. If you feel so inclined, maybe find your way over to the switchblade sub-form and post a pic or pics of your switchblades. We always like to see people's collections. And older collections can be especially interesting.

To find that subforum, or any others, just click on the white "Forums" button in the blue banner across the top of the screen. Then you'll see a directory of all the different sub-forums. The switchblade sub-forum is near the top.

And at your membership level you would need to use a photo hosting site like Imgur.com to post pics, and then use the BBcode that Imgur assigns to each picture.

Morning all
I'm new here too! I'm Matt, and I am a custom knife maker from Kent in the UK.
I have been making for about 6 years now, and specialise in kitchen, folding and outdoor knives.

I look forward to browsing these pages and hopefully getting to know one or two of you.
