We were all new here once

Hey everyone, new to the forum and relatively new to the hobby. I've been on r/knife_swap, r/knives, and r/knifeclub for quite a while and figured I'd jump in here to see what it's all about. I've collected pocket knives since I was quite young (36 now), I am just now starting to grow my collection and looking to pick up more of the "high end" pieces. Figure this is the perfect place to do my research. I tend to go a little overboard with my hobbies, so hopefully this doesn't get too out of hand. Look forward to meeting everyone!

Welcome to the forum. May as well grab a lifesaver floaty now. And kiss your wallet goodbye. 🤣

So I am brand new to knives, as far as collecting goes. I carried a pocket knife from time to time, mainly for work purposes (construction). When I started this journey a month or so ago I purchased a Civivi Praxis. It has been a great knife at really low price. Action is great, sharp out of the box, and seems really well built. A couple of weeks go buy and I wanted to spend more but I am not there yet lol. I settled on a ZT 0357 assisted. I don't mind the assisted aspect of the knife, I know a lot of people don't like that function on a knife, but it doesn't really bother me. It seems well built and I like the astetics of the knife. However, it has side to side blade play when deployed. I have tried to adjust the pivot screw and it helps, a little, but it when I get right where it needs to be, it's too much and the blade just won't move at all. So I guess I just have to live with a little blade play? It sucks. I bought a $60 knife and it was great. Then buy a $150 knife and it kind of sucks lol. All that to say I am glad to be here, but slightly bummed out. I don't want to spend a lot of money and have to wonder if the knife is going to be right. Could you guys throw some tips my way when it comes to what to buy or who to buy from, in regards to quality? I don't know about ZT lol. Thanks.

Welcome to Bladeforums pvtwhite1988.

That's too bad about the ZT. I've never owned a ZT so I don't know if that issue is normal or a fluke, but if you are unhappy with the knife you should consider returning it for an exchange or a refund, if you can.

As far as recommendations for knives, it's common for people to ask for knife recommendations by starting a new thread here in the General Discussion forum. It will help greatly when seeking recommendations to be as specific as possible regarding what type of knives you are interested in, what your size preference is, what you plan to use them for (if anything), and how much you're willing to spend, etc. To start a new thread just click on the orange "Post Thread" button that appears in the upper right hand corner of the first page of any given sub-forum.

As far as recommendations for vendors, there is a list of vendors here at Bladeforums who help sponsor the forum that you can use, if they weren't good they wouldn't be allowed on the list. You can also ask in the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly sub-forum. That is where good and bad vendors are typically discussed. Here is a link to the paid sponsors list of vendors- https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/paid-dealer-members-list.1783428/

You can find the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly sub-forum by clicking on the "Knife Exchange" button in the upper left hand side of the blue banner across the top of the screen

In general, by just reading this forum you will come to see what knives and brands people like, and what vendors they prefer. But you're always free to ask.

Great post! It's important to remember that we were all new to the hobby at some point, and to treat others with the same patience and understanding that we would have appreciated when we were starting out. It's also good to remind ourselves that criticism should be constructive and not just for personal entertainment. Thanks for bringing this important topic to light and for the update on how the community has evolved.

Good post. I'm always slightly confused by people jumping on new posters or complaining about a thread that's been done to death.
I've been on various forums for about 30 years now, not as much recently. I've always thought it was a bit more annoying to some people than it ought to be when somebody brings up a topic that's already been discussed a great deal by the "regulars." Granted, new folks to the topic would hopefully search out threads on the subject; however, regardless how "bored" some are of a topic, we have to remember that there are always new folks, hopefully, who've just discovered the joy in some particular new knife, gun, or whatever, and want to engage people on the topic. The "nonvirtual" version of this excessive annoyance is the old guy at the real gun & knife show or in the gun shop that continually turns people off on the hobby due to his being an old curmudgeon and having no time for anybody other than experienced experts or folks who have already thrown down their money. We're all that way at times, I'm sure, although I try to check myself. I'm fairly ignorant myself about knives, so I can sympathize.

Straight up! There was a guy who ran the pistol range where I taught myself to shoot... looked at reviews first to get a vibe of the place, and pretty much the dude lived in a nice part of SoCal and just appeared to hate it, any question you asked him, would get you a sort of, "Well, whadda YOU think???" way of feeling dumb for asking. I think he clocked that I was a new shooter so he hands me a .38 instead of a 9mm. "SAFETY" lol...

I was there for it all, the different experience, the small, shabby nature, all of it. However, that kind of behavior REALLY did not help my fiance who also first shot there. She took a mindset of, this is serious, this is the first time I'm doing this, I do not wanna think over whether a question will sound dumb - and she had a good point. Gramps is an entertaining source of amusement for me and the cops or whoever else went in there, but not so much for others, you can't run a business that way, and he doesn't anymore.

Nice screenname btw! Love ol' Hickok

I am a newby although I have been collecting for 40 years. Not sure of all the details but I do KNOW what I like! Sometimes collections are built with that in mind rather than what is "the best" My point is as long as YOU like it what difference would it make to anyone else. I like the feel of this group and look forward to learning more!

I have a ZT, one my dad had purchased, probably around 5 years ago. It’s a right good size edc, but it’s sharp as a razor, and has got plenty of “snap” to it. I’m sure this particular model was around 150-200 bucks, little more than I would spend, but overall I’ve been satisfied with it.

Hi guys! I'm pretty new to knives and thought I'd make my first post in this thread. I currently have a preference for small and slicey knives and I can't stop carrying my dragonfly. If anyone has recommendations for other small slicers I'd love to hear em!
Awesome and welcome. The esee izula is one of my favorite small knives.

Welcome to BF gioistired! Since you like Spydercos, I can't recommend the Chaparral enough for a small slicer. It's a little bigger than the Dragonfly, but I definitely think it fills the hand much nicer.

Should you be using Hickok45's name on forums (especially ones so closely related to what he does)? Seems exceptionally misleading...Have you asked him to do so?
