We were all new here once

New here and wanted to make it official. Have always had an interest in knives and use them quite a bit on the job. (Carpenter). Of course that leads to the addiction, and that leads here I guess. Seriously though, after poking around the site for just a bit, it becomes painfully clear that there is a HUGE amount of information here for the gathering.

Thanks to all who put in the work and all the great contributors.

Have a nice weekend.

Brough.

First post after signing up and attempting a purchase that fell thru because the seller didn't want to sell to a noob. Oh well..... hope this isn't representative of the forum. Doesn't seem so as I've lurked for a long time, but time will tell.

If you can reference positive trade feedback you've received on another forum or on eBay, that can help sellers feel more comfortable selling to a user with little or no feedback here.

I obviously don't know the details, but if find that rather odd. A noob's money is just as good as anyone else's money - unless you were trying to pay with magic beans or something?

Some folks have been burned, so they might be gun shy. Other folks only want to deal with people who have been around x years or x transactions. Lots of people only sell to CONUS which leaves Alaska out even though shipping flat rate costs the same. Don’t get frustrated! A couple of makers have sold me several knives despite me not being ‘well known’, and some great members have reached out to let me know they would sell to me.

On eBay I'm at 2497 positive feedback with 100% rating since 1999. But that doesn't count in his realm since payment was simply returned and was never asked for background. Likely a buddy of his on the board wanted it and it was way to easy to push me aside. Hey, it happens. Kinda like a fresh grad that needs experience to land the job, but needs the job to show the experience.
I appreciate your reply to help my social credit score.

Nope, it was PPFF. He appeared to be a solid member. I wasn't concerned on my side. However the payment was returned within a minute or 2 of being sent. Perhaps he wanted gold instead of the phoney baloney $$$ we carry in our wallets and use in PP. But that wasn't stated.

Don't take it personally. It's part of getting comfortable with the people here and they with you.
Sometimes the old curmudgeons who feel they are parting with something special or have had grief from newbies in one form or another will take seeing you around a bit first. And then again, he or she could be a bit of a you know what, and that happens too, but not too often.
Stick it out. If you've been around for a while and decided to jump in, you probably will get along just great.
A little patience with the curmudgeons and be cool. :)

There is something here for everyone who really likes or wants to know about knives, from the science of it to the artistry and uses of it and, most of all, indulging in the addiction, I mean appreciation of all things knives.

Might have something to do with your profile being blocked from viewing, just a guess of course. But it does look a tad suspicious, JMHO.

Well, I am a newbie. At my age, it's great to be able to say that and mean it. I've carried a variety of knives for years, never knowing good from bad, and probably a very poor idea of what "sharp" was.

Honestly, I am here trying to figure out from you experts, what a good EDC knife is. I am a hobbyist woodworker and can keep cutting edges sharp on lathe tools and scrapers and such, but not on my carry knives. Well, I am trying to up my game and looking for recommendations. I'd guess you probably read that100 times a day.

Is there a sticky thread on knife choices and recommendations in various price points? A good folding spear point with assisted opening might be what I am looking for.

If you do a search here for ‘a good edc’, ‘what is a good edc’ or the thread ‘edc whick knives are you carrying’, you will see tons of examples. I highly suggest going to a store that has a good inventory to literally put your hands on different blades. What feels like the best knife for one, another may not like at all. Have a budget in mind!

Welcome to Bladeforums Dan-C.

You could always start a thread here in General Discussion asking for recommendations for the type of knife you're looking for, lots of people make such threads.

To start your own thread click on the orange "Post Thread" button on the first page of this sub-forum. If you do this it would help people offer recommendations if you say what your price range is.

Also, BladeHQ has a pretty good search function that allows people to choose what characteristics they want in a knife (blade length, blade type, opening method, price, etc), this can give you an idea of what is available. The search function appears on the left side of the screen when you select the type of knife you're interested in.

Good luck in your search.

Welcome to the forum, Dan!
For an EDC I recommend a Carothers (CPK) DEK1 in D3V steel. The "D" stands for the Delta heat treat protocol of the steel. Here is a link to the CPK encyclopedia page for the DEK1. I love mine!

Your legit reply is why I wanted to get my handle back as an old member that also include positive feedback.
I posted it and maybe Sparks can make it happen. Current handle days 2 yrs 000 feedback. Been here since 2013 a huge difference.
Plus the negatives that are associated with being new I want. avoid💯

Stumbled over this thread and was shocked it’s still alive.

What the OP mentioned about poor treatment of new members wasn’t my experience here but I know it was for many.

Where I did experience all those negatives and far worse ones was in the JD.
This was mainly in the balisong/butterfly threads.

The older members would admonish new members for mistakes that broke their site TOU!
Then these same Members would break the TOU repeatedly and consciously on the regular.

They were never admonished or penalized. They were given free will to do as they chose by the site owner. Who also would admonish new members. While ignoring all his old friends/comrades.

Basically they operated like Many police departments did and do in the southern United Snakes 🐍.
To include trying lynch members like myself who stood their ground and defended themselves against their nonstop onslaughts.

Now here’s the think. They all did it for one major reason. = they wanted to make new members run from the site so they wouldn’t buy the knives they were after 💯😂😱.

Took me awhile before I figured it out too smdh. Now, here’s the conclusion. After all the shit I had to repulse/endure I then became respected by them 😂some begrudgingly so but still.

I don’t go there anymore because of how I was allowed to be treated.
Were this type of thing offline, it wouldn’t be tolerated and the price would be physical injury. It would be rare though because most folks online are wimpy asshats who won’t say shit to a man in front of him lol. The end

One thing I wanted to add in terms of how new members are routinely treated more often than not.

We are all built differently with various life’s experience and education that often isn’t the same as many/most.

How we think is different as well to a point.

Too many members seem to expect others to be, think, act and reason like they do. Which is really sad since so many of their ways are impractical/stupid quite often.

The mods should do a better job at dealing with the original member who starts shit; that’s often connected to their idea others need/should be like them.

It’s not cool to pretend both parties are at fault but that’s how it goes down quite often.

Lastly one thing I know that’s legit in life. If anyone treats you the same way you wrongly treated others, you don’t like it and feel it’s wrong 😑

Problem is in the United Snakes 🐍 to include online forums there are thousands who are allowed to act this way. Many with positions of power just like in offline society.
When they decide your fate = your not doing anything wrong does not matter to them. 🥵
