Web Exclusive: Heritage Series Knives - Cocobolo Handles with D2 Steel

I know they are stretched thin with regards to repairs and engraving. I sent in a few blades in March, and didn’t receive them back until June. Can’t speak to how this impacts whatever you’re hoping to have done, but when I’ve reached out to them, they’ve been responsive and candid about turnaround times, so you might try shooting them an email.

How crazy is this I mailed that 105 back on June the 11th, and I still ain’t heard nothing, I think Buck is trying to get rid of me, or maybe not maybe it always takes this long for people who return their first knife,
Did you return it for refund, repair, or exchange?
The last knife I returned took 6 weeks to get my money back.
I believe the repair shop is much longer.

I called warranty last week to pay for some knives that I sent in for SPA treatment and was told that they could not help me and transferred to another department that had a recording that said they were out for lunch and it was 3:00 pm must be working on a lot of returns, and taking late lunch’s . I think it might be time to move on,
GPyro I didn’t say what I wanted, but I included my phone number with the short long note about my opinion of the knife, I was going to expect another knife but I’m thinking they ain’t going to call me, maybe I shouldn’t have included the note, LoL

I contacted Buck regarding my 102 having a "Burnt" tip via the Chat Box on the web site and they emailed me a prepaid shipping label within a few minutes of our conversation. I returned the knife and then contacted them after two weeks to see what the status was. The next day after contacting them I received an email with the tracking number and the replacement knife arrived in Minnesota 3 days later. Original knife purchased near the end of May and received in the beginning of June. I contemplated on what I should due regarding the "burnt" tip for awhile then after see others with this problem I decided to contact Buck. Waited until I returned from a vacation and first contacted Buck on June 25th and received replacement on July 16th.

I just bought a 119 Heritage Series knife to add to the 102 and 105 Heritage Series knives I bought earlier this summer. I am thinking that I need to add a 120 to the group also. Does anyone know how long these knives with D2 steel and Cocobolo handles will be offered? It looks like Buck has been selling them since May 2021. A few of these posts seemed to indicate that numbers were getting low, but that was over a year ago and they are still in stock. I am just trying to figure out if Buck sells these types of exclusives for a while, only for a limited time, or a certain number of units before stopping. Anyone have any past experience with these types of specials?

most of us including me were guessing based on historical runs of knives like this. only Buck knows or maybe Jeff at Buck or DOGPOUND77 does?😁

Anyone had any time in the field with these heritage series d2 blades? Specifically with regards to hunting? I have a 102 and a 105, and both of them are the only Buck knives I have ever purchased that weren’t hair popping sharp out of the box. I could run both blades back across my arm and not a single hair would be cut. Obviously d2 is a steel that can be hard to sharpen, but I processed an antelope in the fall of ‘21 with the 105 and I was unimpressed with how it held its edge. At home I used the 102 to butcher some of the animal as a comparison, and had much the same results, even after I had put a decent edge on it. I put both blades away after that and haven’t revisited them until now. Just wondering how other peoples heritage d2s have fared under use. Thanks in advance.

I have the 102, 105, 119, and 120 in D2. I ordered them at different times last year and all of them came paper slicing sharp. To me the 119 and 120 are too pretty to use. I have used the 105 to clean squirrels, catfish, and dress and debone a deer. I have never sharpened it in the 10 months I have owned it. It is still sharp. I tried to use the 102 on a squirrel and it would not cut the skin. The 102 slices through paper without a problem, but it did not want to cut the squirrel. I am not sure what the problem was, but the 105 took care of it no problem. I have heard that D2 can take more effort to sharpen, but so far, I have not had to sharpen it.

A 124 in d2........?

Hmm, never thought of that.

Maybe a full flat grind like the SK 104........ And a bit more of a rounded handle......
🤔

Maybe Buck just doesn’t know how to heat treat d2 well. Different steels require different processes. They obviously do 420 well, and I think their 5160 is excellent. Maintains its edge better than 420 in my experience, and takes a better edge, easier as well. Besides wishing Buck hadn’t deep-sixed their relationship with C&C & the like, I wish they would at least offer 5160 in the custom shop. I have other d2 blades that hold a good edge and sharpen up with reasonable effort. The performance of these d2 Bucks makes me think something in the heat treating process is going awry. Just sharpened my 105 and it took way too long to get a good edge on it. I doubt I’ll be able to maintain it in the field, but hopefully I’ll get the chance to test that out here with a few days of chasing gobblers.

I agree. I picked up a few 119's and 120's in 5160 from Copper and Clad a few years back. Great knives, great steel.

Yeah, I think if I were to hope for a 124, it would be other than d2......

I just never really hope for a new d2 knife.
But I'd probably buy a 117...
Someone has a C&C 124 in 5160 for trade in the classifieds right now...

I see that.
Thanks for the heads up, but I was fortunate to get one back when they were out.
I just wasn't wise enough to grab 2, as I really wanna force a patina on one.

Years back I remember a member selling one for a very good price complete with a really nice custom sheath.
It took awhile for that to sell.
I almost bought it just to get the sheath.....
He made some great stuff!.
