Weekend Projects (Fun or Otherwise)

Wife got this wind spinny thingy last week from a neighbor that was getting rid of it. Took a wire brush to it, gave it a coat of rust reformer, and freed up the frozen bearings while waiting on her color choice. Finished it up today.

Not sure why but I undertook the challenge of making a cane.

Started off rough after trying to make a large pencil sharpener but no real way to spin fast enough so hand turning it near ruined the wood.
Here is my journey in a few pictures.

Chittum burl handle,
Bog oak neck
Osage orange shaft

Great trial run for the mandatory sword cane!

I'll take this if it's available please. 😁

Looks great bro!!

Bought a snowblower from auction. Had to weld the wheel to the sleeve. $2500 blower for $930 and $200 in fuel to get it. It looks pert near new.

Decided to try and learn something new.
Conceptually it is straightforward… putting it into practice is a whole different ball game.
I got a sheath making kit from an online retailer and it wasn’t too shabby.
Got some 8/9oz veg tanned leather. A lot thicker than anticipated. That’s where the fun began. Actually slicing my thumb peeling potatoes earlier in the weekend, but that is a different story (that’s actually the whole story there).
Taking on this endeavor really makes one appreciate the masterful skill and work of people like Chad, Bill, and Michael.
Bravo gentleman. I will continue to learn and improve.

That’s a skill I don’t possess, you did great 👍

I really like that color too, really matches the scales, very nice work SwarthyGnome SwarthyGnome ❤️😎

Had to rebuild our basketball hoop. Gotta be close to 30 years old, and is heavy AF. The original bolts were welded at the bottom and over time finally rusted/broke through. Got an aluminum plate to sure up the bottom and all new stainless hardware. Will be going to the next door neighbor.

Just hanging out making some noise.

Bulk waste pickup is on Monday, so I'll be chopping and cutting branches to haul out to the curb.

At some point we will need to lay sod this spring. I'm planning on doing hybrid bermuda grass (it doesn't spread by seed, only by rhizomes) because of its drought tolerance.
Good luck,

I laid sod once for a buddy, and only once.

Was a multi person job back in the day and I was in fantastic condition, even when I was in my 20s. Turned out ok, nothing special in the end.

Lots of watering and maintenance.

In the end, it looked no different than seed, unfortunately.

I wish you the best 🙏🏻

You can't get seed for hybrid bermuda grass. It doesn't produce seeds, which is the only reason it's now legal here. It'll be worth the water savings and lower maintenance.
