Im off work today (long story)
and somone knocks on my door at about 10am, so i go and answer and the fedex guy is there. I think to myself "i dont have any thing coming" so i sign for it and he hands me the evolope. I open it up and there is a check made out to me for 1,300.00$ in the memo line it just says "A gift", So i head down to the bank to cash it, (at this point im 99% sure its a joke, but it would be a same to trash it without knowing) so i walk up to the counter and hand over my ID and the lady asks if i want in in my bank or cash. About now im really excited so I have her but it in my account and i take 300$ in cash. I get home and check my bank account balance online, low and behold im 1grand richer!

and no this isnt a joke im just as confused as you

Yeah, I would definitely not cash something like that without figuring out exactly where it came from first. Seems just a bit fishy to me.

Hate to rain on anybodies parade, but did a quick google search for "fedex gift check scam" and found some great reading. Take it for what it's worth. In the meantime, I'll split the $1000 with you for doing the research- paypal is fine.

the bank was legit its "Wachovia Bank"
anyone heard of somone named David Sallack?
thas who the check was from

No return address? No way to contact the sender? At the very least, I'd wait a couple of weeks before spending anything.

Agreed, wouldnt hurt to wait two weeks and see if complications arise through your bank. Banks get hit harder all the time with bad checks and they screen, but they dont catch em all. Hopefully its all cool and all yours:thumbup:

Seems shady, I wouldnt spend the other $1000 till it clears. My searches came up as it's likely a scam of some sort:

This is a common scam.

The scam works three ways.
1-You'll get a certified letter from a very angry person saying that you cashed his check illegally. He'll demand that you repay him (with additional fees, of course, for his troubles).

2-You'll get a letter from a "bank" telling you that they sent you the check by mistake. They will ask that you give them your bank information so that they can get the money back. They will then use this information to steal your identity or, if you actually gave them your bank routing number, they will empty your account.

3-Somewhere on the check or letter that came with it should be some VERY fine print full of legal jargon. In short, it will say that the check is actually a LOAN and by cashing it, you accept all terms. These terms usually involve ridiculously high interest rates. The scammers expect that you'll have already spent the money, so you'll have to work out years worth of payments to repay the "loan."

Sounds like a check scam, when they get the check with your account number on it, they'll start taking a little out here and there. However, I've never seen examples of this kind of scam with an amount so high. Or when the checks were actually legit.

The bank is easy to fake, and if you google for fedex check scam, you'll see that a lot of them come from wachovia bank.

I would go back to your bank immediately, return the cash, and tell them that you think the check is a scam, to try to prevent yourself from getting hit with any fees.

I has no idea how this happened, I didnt recognize the name on the check and a google search turned up nothing.
so.................. what to spend it on!!!!!
GO!

Go back to the bank and give them the $300. Ask them to verify that the check is good. You can also ask your local FBI office. It is a scam, and you will be charged back plus penalties if you spend the money.

You might want to look into getting a new account number, the scammers will likely get a scanned copy of your cancelled check soon if they don't have it already.

That would be my guess - you just took out a $1300 loan at a really high interest rate. I get checks like that all the time - legit checks from legit institutions (if you can call the big banks "legit institutions" with a straight face)

Oh, I must have forgot to include the letter. The check was in exchange for your entire knife collection. Glad you got the check, PM me for my addy to send me your collection!

Just kidding of course. This sounds beyond suspicious. I wouldn't have cashed it to begin with. Get a copy of the check from the bank and start doing research. It's got to be some kind of scam. Not too many people handing out large amounts of money, these days.
