weirdest thing happened today

Didn't your grandmother pass away just recently? Could this have anything to do with that? A friend of your grandmother saying "thank you" for looking after her, perhaps?

If it isn't legit you will be hit with fees from your bank. Do the safe thing, the right thing now while your bank still has the check in hand. Have the bank manager check it out for you..

well ill give it a week or two, see what plays out

I really hope in a week or two this hasn't spun out of control on you. If you have overdraft protection on your account, it could be a very expensive lesson in how a stolen bank account number can spoil your day, not to mention what a spoofed debit card could do.

Agreed and since you're already off work, go close the account and open a new one today, NOW, what are you waiting for get going. Seriously, getting a new account may save you loads of trouble in the future.

Lots of check scams. I'm afraid you should put that $300 in with the rest and wait for the scam to unveil itself. DO NOT SPEND ONE CENT!

back from the bank i did just that, I also asked them if they could stop all transactions for a week.
so we will see what happens.

Wise choice. I hope it isn't a scam but...

Just don't spend any of that money until the check clears. If someone contacts you asking you to send money back to them, tell them to go jump off of a cliff.

I didnt tell them anything just put the money in my account and had transactions stopped

I would tell them the whole story. As it stands, it may look like you tried to scam someone else for the money. Id march right back in there, and tell them the story and that your worried after thinking about it.

My thoughts is that the person will into the picture and say that you "intercepted" the check somehow. Not exactly sure whats going to happen, but it most likely aint good.

Did you check the information on the "Shipped From" portion of the label? That should tell you a lot, and reverse address lookups for information are fairly easy to do on the internet.

Also, if you receive any more checks in the future you would do well to take it to the senders bank (Wachovia) to make sure it is legit and remit it for cash. That way there is no link to your bank account.

The fact that your bank deposited it does not at all mean it's a "legit" check. Most banks will post the amount to your account until the check clears but for example if you only had $5 in there previously, I doubt they would give you the cash for the total amount. If the check is a forgery, Wachovia may have to cover the expense to your bank either directly or through insurance but it will be investigated. Hopefully this is someone who owes you or your family money from a past debt, but I can't imagine there wouldn't be a note attached to it. If it is a forgery, you will have alot of explaining to do to prove that you weren't in on it. I agree with the previous poster that you should bring it to the bank's attention now.

That could, without being much of a stretch, make you an accomplice to their bank fraud.

I agree... I know you want this to simply be some free money that came your way... and its none of my business... BUT, since you posted it here for all to see...

I think this is a scam and no matter how much you hope and wish that its some free money... its probably not.

I vote for full disclosure to the bank. Let them check it out. If its legit then OORAH! FREE MONEY!

If its not then you dont get involved in something that is a little more serious than finding 20.00 on the street.

I would tell the bank exactly what happened AND contact LE and have a report written. Don't spend any of it. Have all your bank account numbers changed and contact a credit reporting agency and have a fraud alert issued.

i don't want to judge or anything but i think you are making a poor decision by not being upfront with the bank. This could turn out to have more serious reprocussions than you realize right now. It's not worth it imo.

Seems just a bit fishy to me.

Hmmm!

Lets see... Cat avatar.

Cat's got beer.

Something seems fishy to you!

Wake Up! You're a cat having a beer induced nap, and naturally you're dreaming of fish!

Sorted!
