weirdest thing happened today

Tell the bank you're not sure of the validity of the check. Then they'll hold it for 14 days for you to make sure it clears etc. Get them in on it or you could be up a creek if the SHTF.

That absolutely screams scam. Talk to the bank. If its legit you are doing fine. If its not it only looks better for you having already voiced concerns to the management.

I have seen plenty of good people get scammed in a variety of ways. If its too good to be true it probably is.

A friend got a check for a similar amount, though the fine print said they'd charge you some stupid amount later. The check was legit, but effectively it was a loan. Hopefully no the case here.

I'm old.

Like the others, radar WAAY up.

"If it sounds too good to be true, it is not true."

People who need money are almost participants to frauds, because they have a real need and, ain't nothing a human does better than rationalize.

I didnt tell them anything just put the money in my account and had transactions stopped

Like the saying goes, "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a bad warning".

It would be so easy to listen to what the people here are telling you, and behave smartly. Some people insist on learning the hard way.

Sad. :(

of course, one could simply open a new account, cash the cheque, and when the cheque issuer send NOTICE of payment due, DEMAND in writing via Registered Mail to see a PROPER BILL as per the Bill Of Exchange Act. Or you can also AFV (Accepted For Value) the Notice they send you, fill in the amount "due" , sign it and in RED ink write AFV Accepted For Value at a 45 deg angle across the Notice.

Mastercard made that mistake with me once. Only once. $900 bucks free and clear because they failed to follow the rules.

At the very minimum, do not let your account drop below that $1300 mark. I would actually try to keep it right around that mark if you can, no extra for a scammer to try to snatch and no chance of going into the negative if\when the $1300 is reversed...

You're being screwed here -- do the smart thing and call the bank. Scams like this are successful because they prey upon your desire to get something for nothing. You know how they say "you can't cheat an honest man"?

Be the honest man, and don't get cheated.

what would happen if you took one of these checks to a check cashing place?

They would probably make you give them 3 forms of ID and a thumb print. Thats what most of the check cashing places around here do when I want to cash my paycheck. They would know just where to find you if something went wrong.

If you are going to participate in a scam by scamming others, use fake or stolen I.D. and change you appearance for when you smile for the cameras. And make sure to scam enough money to cover your bail and your lawyer.

UPDATE! sort of, no calls no emails no horde of angry mobsters and the money is just sitting in my account........ im really not sure what to make of this

It's only been 5 days. I'd say, don't spend that money for a month. Honestly, I'd say put the money in a savings account or something, cuz if it's a scam, you might as well make some interest off it :p

No one, and I mean NO ONE is going to send you money out of the blue. Fed Ex, Hmm, I don't know what the angle is but be assured there is one! Don't spend a dime and like others have said, contact your bank and tell them what happened.

Don't be embarrassed, just go there and start the dialogue. Much smarter people than me or you have been scammed and you need to protect yourself.

Good luck.

Did you talk to the bank? They aren't going to take it away from you if it is legit. And if it is not legit they are going to get their money back and you are going to be the one to pay. Banks aren't stupid and it can take weeks for a check to clear or to come up as fake. Some scams can take months before bad things start happening, long after you have dropped your guard.

You have been warned by dozens of people and yet it doesn't look like you are heeding the advice. I don't know if you have ever had bad credit or know anyone that does but if your identity gets stolen or charges made against your account it can suck. And it can suck for a long time. My girlfriend still has crappy credit and can't do anything about it just because her mortgage company screwed up and was applying her payment into escrow instead of towards her payment. Not her fault and she did not receive the first letter until they were about to start the foreclosure process. They screwed up and were cashing her check and she still got screwed and still has crap credit over a year later. And bad credit can effect all sorts of things in your daily life you don't think it would matter at all.

Not to sound like a jerk but you are being hard headed and are most likely going to end up 'Theamazinglyscreweddrew'

I don't understand why you are not following the good advice given here.

I too chime in to tell you to be honest with the bank. Go talk with your branch manager in private. Tell him what you told us here and of having a concern that this check might not be legit. This way you kind of enlist the bank to be your ally in finding out if the check is real or not. If it's real, good for you. If it's not, you won't have the money, but you will have something far more valuable, - YOUR INTEGRITY AND HONESTY.

Once I was given a LARGE bill too much at the bank. As soon as I found out, I called the teller at the bank and told her of it and drove back to town to return the money. It saved the teller from big trouble and I felt good to have done the right thing....

If the check you got is legit, you've gained the money. If it's not and you are not honest with the bank, you've lost your integrity. (your integrity and honesty should be more important than your immediate life.)

-I sympathize with you needing money because you are not working, but consider this to be a test (for yourself) to see what you're made of. Seek the right answer, it's within you.

Best wishes and kind thoughts, -Spinner
