weirdest thing happened today

I don't understand why you are not following the good advice given here.

I too chime in to tell you to be honest with the bank. Go talk with your branch manager in private. Tell him what you told us here and of having a concern that this check might not be legit. This way you kind of enlist the bank to be your ally in finding out if the check is real or not.

I also don't understand.

Drew,

You need to have the bank on your side if this turns sour when the check comes back, or the people who sent it to you try to empty your bank account. Be smart about this.

Hate to rain on anybodies parade, but did a quick google search for "fedex gift check scam" and found some great reading.

In post # 5, livingmochila gave you this very good advice. Did you take it? Did you even look? Look now: fedex gift check scam

This is no joke. Check it out. These people are experienced. Get your bank on your side, fast.

Greed is one of the best human baits. Good luck, you should just stay away from stuff like that. I once was called and told that I won a car. Call your nearest dealer and choose a model, just pay for tax and license to this promotion company, because by law they could not, blah blah blah. I was indecisive, and they got mad, and finally I came to my senses. I would have been out quite a bit of money and looked like a fool. Talk to your bank, clean this up, it will bite you.

Im off work today (long story)
and somone knocks on my door at about 10am, so i go and answer and the fedex guy is there. I think to myself "i dont have any thing coming" so i sign for it and he hands me the evolope. I open it up and there is a check made out to me for 1,300.00$ in the memo line it just says "A gift", So i head down to the bank to cash it, (at this point im 99% sure its a joke, but it would be a same to trash it without knowing) so i walk up to the counter and hand over my ID and the lady asks if i want in in my bank or cash. About now im really excited so I have her but it in my account and i take 300$ in cash. I get home and check my bank account balance online, low and behold im 1grand richer!

and no this isnt a joke im just as confused as you

This to be a spinoff [do you remember?] of the millionaire & John Beresford Tipton. Ask dad to explain, that has been Obama-sized but hooray on your good fortune.

Andrew, how has it gone with the bank deposit? Did the check clear? Have you heard from the person who sent you the free money? Have you heard from your bank?

ok heres the deal, I took your guys advice and talked to the bank about 2 weeks ago. I told them everything, they told me the best course was to just wait and see what happens.......................... I have been doing just that and so far the money is just sitting in my account.

Good for you!

Who knows... maybe this is a legitimate gift from a good soul!

WAIT and see though. When the bank says the check clears, you are good to go!

If/when the bank says it is yours free and clear, spend it as you wish. Until then, keep your fingers crossed. If the bank advises that the funds are legit, it is on them if something crops up later. I hope one of you (you or the bank) kept a copy of the check and any enclosed correspondence just in case there was some "microprinting" of details of a loan at an outrageous interest rate.

I know this is dragging up the dead, but I want to know how this ended. Never been a followthrough. Sometimes it takes a month or so. It's been almost three years.

At what point did the party crash?

I can't believe an anonymous check was deposited and stayed legit.

I sent him an email through the system.

Codger, you are likely correct!

Not that old. I've seen ten year dead threads dug up. Maybe he just can't afford internet access with the payments on that loan.

There's nothing inheriently wrong with bringing up an old thread. Sometimes it's inappropriate; resurrecting a ten-year-old for-sale thread to ask if the knife is still available is an example of that. But, in this case, there really isn't any other way to see of anyone knows anything about how the story turned out.

And what's the harm in it? If nobody has anything new to update the story with, the thread will just drift softly back down the list. No harm, no foul.
