Welcome to Ingsoc: British Scout Assoc. bans knives...

Whale oil beef hooked. Scouts without knives. How can they 'be prepared'?

The ability to produce and use knives has been of central importance to the survival of our race for a heckuva long time. What nonsense. Knives are valuable tools.

I'm lost for words...... Coote

I post this with some apprehension. First of all, I agree that taking knives away from scouts is wrong. That being said, as a non-parent, it seems to me we are raising a generation of irresponsible infants. Grown up decisions regarding "rights" are promoted, while attendant responsibilities are not taught or demanded.

In this environment, I have had scout leaders say that they were frustrated by restricting knives, but that the scouts had very little impulse control. (This is the issue that should be addressed, as opposed to taking away the knives.)

Yes Flix. I think you are on to it.

Also a lot of folks live lives that are not so practical nowadays in terms of self-sufficiency and having good manual skills. Many folks feel no need for a pocket knife. Kid's grandpappies don't always carry one. Food comes from a supermarket etc etc.

Impulsive behaviour is definitely an issue.

One of the worst factors in this whole 'weapons banning' thing, I think, are violent videos and computer games. Violence can become engrained in our reasoning process.
