Hey folks, just had a 'lovely' day today with my Zelle account being shut down due to some flags on two accounts that were being sent to me. I called to see what was going on and my bank said, "Hey, it's Zelle not us" and said that Zelle found two accounts that were suspicious of being scammers that were tied to my account of funds coming in. I was a bit taken aback by all that! And they said, no, nothing that I did, just that my account was the one that these other accounts were sending in money were flagged by Zelle. I only had a couple recently and one I tried to buy something which made me aware that something was going on as they blocked that person and wouldn't let me send funds.

The bank lady asked, 'is the person you are trying to send money to a close friend?' I said while not a close personal friend but it is someone that I would trust enough to do that. And she proceeded to...politely...reprimand me regarding using Zelle for other than family or close personal friends. I said. 'how many close friends do people have?' but acquaintances we have from one way or another you do get to kinda know a person. But when it comes to money and banks, banks always seem to win.

So fair warning to you good folks out there that use Zelle, for a very very long time I held off doing any transactions such as that, relying more on US Postal money orders or checks. And that seems to be what I am going to return to as of today...:(

Sorry to see you had problems with Zelle. I much like you had made the choice to only use money orders instead of trying to bypass new rules by using PayPal's friends and family. I don't have cash app or other apps like many to use so Zelle seemed like it might be a good option.

Did they freeze the account associated with the Zelle transfer? Or just disallow using it?

Just cut off the Zelle access, but my checking account was still intact. But the couple of transactions have not POSTED yet so those are in question and she said that they might not come through completely, hopefully tomorrow will tell the tale if they were fully processed or not. In the mean time I am not shipping out, which is unusual for me, but I'm a bit in a mood right now.

It could just be the internet's way of telling me to stop buying knives?

I understand totally holding off sending. Hopefully it gets sorted out. I had a teller at the bank ask me if I knew the person who sent me a money order, saying they had all been told to watch for transactions from a couple states they had seen lots of fraud coming from recently.

Usually the internet tells me to buy more! :D

Zelle is also a great tool for thieves. I had my Wells Fargo hacked, and about 5 Zelle transactions were attempted from my checking. Fortunately the bank flagged them. I had to go to the branch and change accounts. I’ve never used Zelle and never will.

Caveat Emptor...as always.

Sorry for your aggravation, Gary. I've never used Zelle and don't intend to.

Gary, I’ve been pretty pleased with Cashapp. I recently downloaded it. It’s simple and if taking payment I don’t believe you can be screwed in any way. I’m not huge on using it to pay though unless I fully trust the person I’m paying.

Like you G2 I closed my PayPal years ago and relied on money orders or cash/check for some years now. I dipped my toes in with Zelle a few times in the last year and it’s been ok so far. I don’t sell much these days largely because it’s become the Wild West outside of this forum. This is the only place I feel comfortable enough to do so.

I’ve always enjoyed trading more but seems like it’s not as popular here as I once remembered. Facebook groups, Instagram, Reddit, I just can’t get on board with. So I do a little wheeling and dealing here and there on Bladeforums but keep a pretty tight lid on it.

Those Yap Islanders are not to be trifled with! :)

and thanks guys, while I've been here since 1999 it's filled with lots of 'friends' through the years, now, new people, new world everything new, getting old we tend not to like new, unless it's a new knife of course, but new things not so much. Stuck in the mud some might say, but I'm fine with that.

My system has always been that I never buy any of my toys with my family/work/house money, it's only with money that I can scrape together from leather work, paracord work, sharpening work and a lot of selling one to get another. As I don't buy on credit, only buy when I can pay it outright. So my wife has never worried about any packages that arrive as she knows that I have it covered. And of course my extracurricular work often is spent towards the family/house/cars as well as my toys. What money I can get from selling a knife usually ends up almost always at a loss, but the amount that is lost I mark that down as a rental fee during the time I got to see this new bit of steel, my way of rationalizing and lessening the sting :)

Banks are Banks, you don't see things move quickly usually, so right now the funds that show in my account from recent transactions are "Pending" which I figure that they can go up in smoke by tomorrow, or they will be "Posted" and I can go ahead and ship these couple of knives on to the guys. IF they go up in smoke, then they will be back up for sale but fingers crossed that doesn't happen.

Reminds me of this bit;

For the time being, yep, but basically closed down the few items I had up for sale, just one remains open an inexpensive folder.

I don't feel up to trying any other online methods and I had my reservations even trying zelle out too, but it seemed to work ok, until it didn't...

i dont blame ya, ive been thinking of selling some things but its such hassle nowadays its barely worth it

The good part about not selling is that you do buy those things that you like, so no matter what you have something that at one point attracted you to it. My collection is less now so all in all that's a good thing.

I didn't sell much of anything in the past. I was only a buyer.

But now, in the hobby.... this year I used US Post Office MO, and that wasn't too bad.

when I took the first one to my bank to get cashed, idk if the teller ever saw one before?
she looked at it what seemed like forever, and started to make me nervous...haha

You can go to any post office and they will cash it, depending on how much it is as they sometimes don’t have enough to cover a large one

Mine told me to only come in on Monday afternoons to cash them, or else they won't have enough......

Banks are easier.

Idk if Other places will cash them too?

If I’m mailing a lot I will use the money order as part of the payment but normally I just deposit it in the bank

Zelle is dangerous to have linked to your account. Were you to be hacked and money transferred many banks just say "it sucks to be you.". There are no meaningful legal protections.
