While I am sure that not all bankers have oily handlebar mustaches and twirl the ends with evil delight as they tie the fair maiden to the railroad tracks, but perhaps there’s a few

It’s the software that gets hacked by unscrupulous people with no care for decent folks, but sometimes the banks have blinders on.

For now it’s back to the slower methods and maybe slower pace at buying and selling things?

Appreciate the advice given in this thread

I've gone to only excepting personal checks. If folks don't want to pay that way it's OK with me. Most of what I sell is listed locally and I ask for cash first. Recently I had a couple of knives listed that way, got contacted by a BF member from out of state. It worked out fine and I have a new friend.

Recent story: I had to do a bank transfer to my daughter, had to go in person. The teller knows me but still questioned if I'd talked to my daughter. I said "no, done by text". She had me call her for verification of the account! Told me that they get a lot of romance scams and she was trying to protect me. I guess it's a good thing, I know of two older ladies that have been scammed that way.

It always sounds like they are looking out for your best interests, and could very well be as you noted of two instances that did go sideways. Not a great thing to happen for sure! I was always leery of online type stuff, I only have one credit card that is always paid up and used only when necessary. My wife uses her debit card the most and credit card when necessary but I'm just not that into using cards.

Gah sorry Gary! I feel bad that I suggested Zelle to you but I've never had a problem. . . . Yet

It was a bit of a shock when they told me

I have to boycott one of my favorite local pizza places and the closest coffee shop because they now refuse to take cash. I'm embracing my curmudgeonliness and It's a matter of principle.

Thats just dumb business. I rarely use or carry much cash unless I'm on vacation, but still think its dumb.

I do use Zelle, but only for friend and family transactions - typically when my daughters need money. Occassionally for things like pet sitters or a neighbor that cuts the grass when we are out of town.

From my experience and what I have learned, you take a chance when using those cash app services, especially if you tie it to your debit card or checking account. Banks will allow you to hit your account with them but most banks do not support those apps or have anything to do with their use, it is up to you. I believe Navy FCU uses Zelle, so that is a little different being that is the biggest Credit Union in the world. i have had a bank manager tell me to consider this, when doing business or traveling, always use a credit card rather than a debit card, it is more secure than a debit card, and if there is fraud, whose money would you rather be hit, the bank’s or your checking account? If you use your credit car, and if legitimate, just pay off the credit card by paying it off from your checking account. Secondly, why would use your debit card on Web sites? Most fraud is on sites that are too good to be true that People are visiting or they Are look a likes, once they get your information, they can drain your checking account, and try to defraud you by requesting more private information or getting you to buy add ons or sale offers. if you use a credit card, if fraud the bank will help you and visa and mastercard have ways to help. Finally, USPS money orders can be stolen as well, but at least there is a way to check the site or 1800 number to see if they have been issued by putting the postoffice issuing number, etc…..if they say it is not issued ( that range of numbers) that is a good way to ask more questions or could be stolen. Just common sense overall, if it this too good to be true it usually is, and deal with people you have known for awhile. Just what I have learned.

One more thing, don’t use a debit card for restaurants, hotel reservations, rental car reservations. Sometimes they will run the card number twice, and it places a double hold in the account, so even if one will only clear the account, if you run close on your balances, it may cause something to be rejected ( bounce, bounce) if something else tries to clear. Also, a good portion of fraud on a debit card is by people you know or if you lend your card out to someone. People do it all the time, don’t do that!! It is common sense.

Gary sorry for your trouble, these things sure can be frustrating. I recently had my Uber account "hacked" and while I did get all my money back it was very frustrating and took quite a bit of doing. If you live in the city sometimes you don't have much choice but to use a Uber/Lyft type service and it was my understanding there wasn't really a way to use if fraudulently because it shows your photo on the app and can only be used from rides and food delivery. The person used my account to get a few rides and food delivery and changed the phone number on the account so I didn't get notifications. I eventually received receipts in email form and had to stop everything to call them so they could freeze my account. I still have their address because they had food delivered to it twice in two days and once I had control back I could see all the activity. It was my understanding that the Uber account shouldn't be able to be hacked because it is tied to your physical phone and Uber had no explanation or excuse for how it happened. I still use PayPal but I'm not happy with it, I hear Cash app is ok and I had no idea that Zelle had fraud problems so I don't think I will get that anytime soon. Thanks for the heads up!

And Zelle was supposed to be one of the most secure options...
I got as far as successfully loading the app before things fell apart, lol. Zelle's platform allowed for neither middle initial nor suffix, and I use both. After an hour on the phone and three levels of customer support, their recommendation was to change how my name is listed on my bank account.
I uninstalled the app.

I'm good with using money orders, or personal checks on a case by case basis...and have shrugged it off when people choose not to buy from, or sell to, me as a result.

I guess that will be the day when I go off the grid and each man will be on his own. It will be a cold day in hell that I take a chip in my hand. I'm fairly certain that Revelations speaks about this day!

hhmoore hhmoore I agree with you, if folks resist taking a money order or check, it probably wasn't meant to be and saved me some coin or I get to keep a knife just a little bit longer ;)

And Hvactech Hvactech certainly something to be said about that, it's in Revelations 13:16-17 that speaks to that. Started with credit cards, so you are not carrying all that cash around, safer, easier, soon you're spending more than what 'cash' you actually have and are indebted to "someone" for a very long time at a high interest rate. If I can't pay for it, I don't get it, at least my 'toys', just doesn't make sense otherwise.

While I enjoyed the speedy service of Zelle for a while, I was always leery of doing that, sometimes a person used a phone number verses an email address as their reference within Zelle, but gave me one that wasn't key and Zelle didn't like it or couldn't locate that person. Once that happened, I couldn't change their status to the one it needed to be, it isn't and/or situation with them. So one person I was just not able to complete the process and maybe that was the downfall for me?

Before I tried/used Zelle it was always a money order or check, and I sold what was to me, an expensive watch. The person told me after he got the money order that it was a strange experience to actually hand over actual money to buy something, said it had more gravitas than he was used to from all his other purchases. I don't buy expensive watches anymore, fortunately! But the steel virus is a strong virus and there is no cure in sight yet!

Lol I have that steel virus as well my friend! And I'm like you, I learned my lesson years ago about credit cards. If I don't have the money then I don't need it! Have a great weekend Gary.

I remember a clip from some old TV show wherein a centenarian was asked what the worst invention of the 20th century was. Without skipping a beat, she answered: “the credit card.” She had a point, for the reasons you mentioned.
First, it enables you to spend yourself into debt.
And second, it makes money seem intangible. There’s just something about forking over cold, hard cash that makes a person feel more “accountable” and perhaps a little more considerate with their money. Obviously, currency-based transactions are frequently impractical, impossible, or inconvenient. So plastic and internet/app-based transactions are far more convenient… until they aren’t.

Zelle recently closed my account due to inactivity. That’s convenient. Now next time we all go in on something at work I’d have to reactivate it. Real convenient.

We are not that far from the collapse of the entire global banking system.

The primary issue is unrelenting fraud and abuse, and ever growing instability. Theft has gone from being an aberration to becoming a feature.

When reasonable people are unable to safely exchange an agreed value for a well defined tangible object, what’s the point?

Fraud is everywhere and you should be mindful of that without being paranoid, though that is a very fine line sometimes. Even then, shit does happen sometimes even if we do everything right. I had an IRS refund check (yeah, I'm a l little older, LOL) stolen out of the mail a few years back and the endorsement on the back was a legibly written female name (and I'm a dude) that wasn't close to resembling my name on the front of the check. And yet it still got cashed by someone! 👎

I would however, consider injecting a Vaxx, if it would help cure this "Steel Virus," so many of us are afflicted with....This Virus can be so damn debilitating at times......
There's a Hinderer Eklipse CF for sale on the sales forum.....I've been back to look at it about 16 times now.....but it's 1 of those damned PPFF seller. ..... So many WokePal seller's here still, saving me a boat load of my hard earned $$$$ money....View attachment 2309806
