Well...It's Friday...

Pine cone Kephart is very grailish! Wish I hadn't got up for the bathroom at 3am now, could have slept blissfully through this!

Is it just me, or are lots of folks backing out once they snag something in a Friday Frenzy? Used to be rare, but it seems to be very common-- as in 3-5 folks per Friday. I just don't want to get into more and more rules like, if you post "I'll take X,Y, and Z" then you can only back out on "X, Y, and Z." Which I can only imagine will make Ken's head explode. I don't want to do the forensics to even see if this is what's happening, but I sense that we may need to do a little self reflection as this week's campfire embers fade.... Ultimately not my call in any way, but I suspect if I've noticed it then many more have also; because, as my wife says, "You are not exactly the most attentive person out there."

It's a hard pill to swallow sometimes when you see a beautiful knife in a model that you're interested in for sometimes $$$+ and then you're lucky enough to snag it on Friday only to find out that it's in 3/16" thick steel. Ugh, do I buy it just to save face or throw it back into the waters for someone else to scoop up the anchor?? It's tough I guess when funds are tight and you don't want to settle.
I figure this is the most common reason for throw backs. Other than the dreaded orange liner ;)

If there was an easy way to find out specs prior to the sale other than bombarding Ken or Vance with those questions, I think that might solve the problem.

I think you just throw it back the second you realize its not the thickness you'd hoped, and someone likely will already have seconds on it. The quicker, the better. But I think many of us understand the sentiment.

I have to agree. I'm relatively new to the tank, so wasn't sure if I should withdraw my claim or not, but I couldn't choke down the orange liners. I'm always surprised at how fast the knives seem to go Friday after Friday though.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't have dog in the fight and I definitely have a better appreciation for the reasons. I'm totally driven by handles and grinds, which I can easily see in the pictures and didn't really think about steel type or liners not being able to be seen. I guess my wife was right yet again and I am not the most attentive person out there....

Have a great weekend!!!!

Your make a good point though. It really must be a headache for Ken to sort out later. Thanks, and I'll be more careful going forward.

As the frenzy has grown and the Fotki upload has become more widely viewed, the tendency to read the knife description (and post full description - of which I have become guilty) has lessened causing a lot more withdrawals. Understandable given the increased competition, keeps Ken on his toes too:) ( I also happen to think orange liners look cool with Emerald burlap and Osage)

lucky enough to snag it on Friday only to find out that it's in 3/16" thick steel. Ugh,

Could you explain this thought in more detail? Is 3/16" too thin for your purposes? I'm a small knife guy (1 Runt, 1 Bushboot) so the steel thickness is not super important to me. I imagine this matters more for the bigger blades and ones you anticipate heavier use with than I ever do.

Thanks.

not speaking for Kal-El, but 3/16" is as thick as Fiddlebacks come so I can only assume he's looking for 5/32" or even 1/8".

Yup, 3/16ths is way too thick for my personal tastes.

For a bushcraft blade, I've come to the conclusion that 5/32" is the right thickness for me. Even though my two most used are 3/16".

I even have a few 1/8" that get beaten on pretty hard and I don't worry about them one bit.

:thumbup::thumbup:

Yeah, I'm not trying to beat a dead horse with this topic. I just wanted to point out as the saying goes, "Different strokes for different folks." My preference has certainly evolved over the years. Even in overall size and profile of the blade.
Thinking even further, my point earlier could totally be dismissed for most individuals considering the collectors aspect. I forget that in most cases, the knives are never used, so thickness of the steel is likely a mute point. I have a few that fit this bill

"Other than the dreaded orange liner"

I like my Tuxedo with an Orange Twist Monarch, reminds me of Halloween. :D I don't understand why a lot of people don't like orange pinstripes, but Tangerine Orange and Electric Orange are highly sought after.
