Went To The Dark Side. . . . Drinkin' Bourbon!!!!!. . . And Lovin' It!!!!

Bourbon is definitely my drink of choice. I love Pappy, and for me the sweet spot is the 20 year, but often times the Four Roses Limited Edition small batch and limited edition single barrel release is among my favorite of the year. Parker's Heritage is released once a year, and it's completely different every year; it can range from being mediocre to about the best stuff on Earth (depending on the year). I keep the Pappy 23 on my HMMWV bottle holder. :)

I agree. I drink my whisky with whisky but I was able to convert a lot of people who thought they hated whisky. I wasn't posting to share cocktail recipes but to make a case for a really affordable whisky and hadn't seen Dickel mentioned.

Ok, we'll let it go:-)

I believe that's how cocktails got started in the U.S.: to make Prohibition -era bathtub gin tolerable.

Alas, hypertension has forced me to limit my alcohol consumption to a couple fingers of Bushmills a few times a year.

Yup. This guy gets it.

SpyderPhreak, for an Old Fashioned I do...
2 oz of rye whisky
3 dashes of Angostura bitters (sometimes just 2 is fine)
1/2 oz of homemade simple syrup (2:1 sugar to water using raw cane sugar)
Orange twist
1 square ice cube

For my "twist", I actually use a peeler to carve off a piece of orange PEEL ONLY (no pulp) and muddle it in the bottom of the glass with the bitters and simply syrup. It is better for extracting more orange oils from the peel.

Edited (again) to add: Don't forget to give it a decent stir to blend everything and add just a tiny bit of chill from your ice cube. It is an aromatic drink so you don't want it be frosty.

You can use regular whisky/bourbon but this recipe adds simple syrup and I think it balances a little better with the rye, Canadian whisky is also great for this for the same reason... they have considerable rye content.

Apart from my extraction on the orange peel being a little more aggressive than a simple twist this is the classic old school boozy recipe. I suppose the use of the cane sugar is "non-standard" but I swear... everyone I entertained preferred it.

Thanks for that! Similar to what I've done as well, though I like a dash of Cointreau in place of the simple syrup sometimes, and tend to like a little more bitters than most recipes call for unless using Rye. Absolutely correct about only using the orange peel! I ordered an old fashioned at a hotel bar in San Diego last year, and they muddled a whole slice of orange in the glass before making the drink. One sip and I sent it back! :barf:

Your killin me Smalls!

Fine whiskey is for sipping, not mixing with gunk!

That all depends on your definition of "fine" whiskey. ;) You're certainly not going to make an old-fashioned with Pappy Van Winkle, at least not sober...

on that I will agree. A few drops of water to let it open up is all that is needed with the closer to cask strength whiskeys

See above. I will agree with that for good whiskey. However, for me, things like Jack, Maker's Mark, Dickel's, etc. are for mixing and not sipping.

Here it is. My 21yr old Willett is a much lower proof than yours, though.

Nice hhmoore.

I bet that Willett is very tasty!

Mine is certainly hazmat though. HAHA

zmbhntr, now that's what I call bringing it.

I can't get my whole collection in the picture but you certainly have a few BTAC aces in your hand there.

Killin' off a fifth of Jefferson's Reserve Groth Reserve Cask Finish and lovin' it!

This could almost pass for scotch!!!!!

Delicious!!!!

Let's Drink!!!

Jerry
:D.

Funny how you recently stumbled upon bourbon little brother. I recently picked up a little Tuthhillow Spirits Hudson Baby Bourbon Whisky (although I have recently been "educated" that non-Kentucky bourbon is NOT bourbon at all:) ) while in the wind and had some time for a little decompression. Yeah, remember when we actually had time for decompression?

That is the one bourbon I always keep on hand for guests. Everyone likes it.

No more Widow Jane....working on a bottle of Blanton's, now
I actually like the Widow Jane, better.

Well I bought a bottle of the four roses small batch.

excellent flavor but not nearly as smooth as Belle Meade or the Willet's. Still, both the BM and Willet's are closer to the $45 range while the roses was about $30 so you won't find me complaining.

As previously mentioned the Woodford Reserve is a great choice in the same price range and a bit smoother IMO.

Great recommendations so far...
