Went To The Dark Side. . . . Drinkin' Bourbon!!!!!. . . And Lovin' It!!!!

RE: Z51 picture

That's a helluva lineup... Only one problem None of them are opened!!!

What you waiting on?

I am mainly a scotch drinker, bourbon is not my go to. But I do have George T Stagg 67%alc and russels reserve single barrel.

Bushmills, ahahahaha. Not even close. Maybe the best you have had. I can name 20 scotches that would eat its lunch.

I entertained every Tuesday night for a year and was serving up some amazing whiskey/bourbon Old Fashioned's. I found it was affordable to serve up Dickel whisky. I quit doing the entertaining but the Dickel 12 (which isn't actually aged 12 years haha!) is something I can still enjoy with an ice cube and splash of water even when I have some Bulleit, Elijah Craig, Buffalo Trace, Knob Creek or whatever on my bar. Their rye is also a great affordable option for mixing. The Dickel rye runs 19.99 and the "12" whisky runs 21.99 around here. There is a dude on YouTube named Ralfy who does great reviews of whisky and Scotch. I HIGHLY recommend his channel. I learned a lot from it.

What's your recipe, if you don't mind my asking?

SpyderPhreak, for an Old Fashioned I do...
2 oz of rye whisky
3 dashes of Angostura bitters (sometimes just 2 is fine)
1/2 oz of homemade simple syrup (2:1 sugar to water using raw cane sugar)
Orange twist
1 square ice cube

For my "twist", I actually use a peeler to carve off a piece of orange PEEL ONLY (no pulp) and muddle it in the bottom of the glass with the bitters and simply syrup. It is better for extracting more orange oils from the peel.

Edited (again) to add: Don't forget to give it a decent stir to blend everything and add just a tiny bit of chill from your ice cube. It is an aromatic drink so you don't want it be frosty.

You can use regular whisky/bourbon but this recipe adds simple syrup and I think it balances a little better with the rye, Canadian whisky is also great for this for the same reason... they have considerable rye content.

Apart from my extraction on the orange peel being a little more aggressive than a simple twist this is the classic old school boozy recipe. I suppose the use of the cane sugar is "non-standard" but I swear... everyone I entertained preferred it.

Your killin me Smalls!

Fine whiskey is for sipping, not mixing with gunk!

on that I will agree. A few drops of water to let it open up is all that is needed with the closer to cask strength whiskeys

I agree. I drink my whisky with whisky but I was able to convert a lot of people who thought they hated whisky. I wasn't posting to share cocktail recipes but to make a case for a really affordable whisky and hadn't seen Dickel mentioned.

I saw dickel yesterday on the shelf. Never noticed it before.

Broke open a bottle of Blanton's this morning. Somewhat surprised that this is my first bottle; but I haven't seen it locally in probably 3 yrs

Man, where's that HOG cunning that always beats me to the best INFI every time?

You guys need to apply your trough skills in other aspects of your lives.....

My entries for the best Busse Combat worthy bourbons:

Left to right:

Willett Family Reserve Barrel C13D, 21 yr
Pappy 15
Pappy 12
George T Stagg

I'm pretty sure I've got that same group here...

*edited to add - got the pic to prove it; but photobucket is down.

We could have fun with showing off the prizes that we're hiding. Things have gotten crazy locally, and one of my better sources no longer ships - so I haven't added any special bottles in the past few years - but my...ummmm..."retirement fund" is well stocked

Some from the blades and bourbon thread:

and a few "users"
