Wereb... so far, so bad

I can't keep quiet any longer. This is the first really bad situation I have encountered here since I first started on BF.

I ordered a Arclite neck knife with tech lock from Sam Wereb in November and he said that he would set one aside for me and send it out the week of Dec. 4th. A week before Christmas I emailed Sam more than once asking what happened to my knife... no reply. I left a reply on his thread on Dealer's forum and he emailed me saying this:
"Eric, I am sorry about all the confusion and for being unresponsive. Your order went out today, Priority Mail, and should arrive Thursday (Dec. 21), or Friday, but no later than Saturday. That is the best the Postal Service says that they can do. Merry Christmas, Sam"

Around the same time Camillius Cutlery sent me an email saying that Sam had not been sent any Arclites from them yet, so it would have been impossible for him to have sent mine.

I sent Sam Wereb another email and asked him to just come clean and let me know what was really going on... I have not heard from Sam Wereb or received my knife yet.

I do not know Sam personally. He may be a good guy... he may be a bad guy... I don't know. What I do know is that what he did was very wrong. This forum is so great, because it was founded by and populated with a bunch of great people... I hope it continues that way.

Anyways... what's done is done. Sorry for the little b@#ch session.

Happy New Years everyone - Eric.

Wow, I don't know how I missed this post but almost the exact same thing happened to me with the same guy! Check my first 'Bad' post thread for the details. I saw him trying to sell a Darrel Ralph Arclite on the Knives For Sale Forum so wonder if someone got taken even harder than we did? Here's the guys info in case you don't have it:

The phone number is good saying it is "The Wereb Family" but forwards to a voice messaging service.

Man, still can't believe all this for less than $25!

Joker,
Here's a link to the Postal Inspector Office where you can file a Mail Fraud complaint:

http://www.usps.com/postalinspectors/

*Just follow the link to the bottom of the page to the "File A Mail Fraud Complaint" link and you're good to go.

Hopefully this guy will turn up and send those knives! I even offered to buy the DR Arclite if he still had it and the Camillus Arclites would be unavailable. YIKES! Dodged a bullet there as he never contacted me about it.

Shawn

I also got burned by Wereb Knives. I was going to order a couple of the arclites as Christmas presents. He told me he had them in stock and was shipping them out. I even talked to him on the phone about them. He said that he was getting one of the first shipments because he was friends with Mr. Ralph. Here are the emails he sent me:

Dennis-
You bet I do. Camillus is keeping us well supplied now. It's getting to be very a popular little knife, and I think you will be pleased with it. A plain-edge version, with Tek-Lock is $27.50 plus $3.50 shipping. Let me know what you need. Please make check or money order payable to

Dennis, USPS, I will find out the status, and call you
tomorrow. You will have them by Christmas, you have
my word on it.

Well, I never received the knives. Luckily I was able to get a replacement gift from my good friends at Top of Texas knives. It is really sad when someone like this comes along and rips off fellow forumites. Hopefully others won't fall into the trap. Has this guy posted anymore?

Something else fishy is the $7.50 discrepancy... $4 more expensive for Dennis' blade and it does NOT include shipping!

I happen to have a few ArcLites now. $23.50 shipped in the U.S. Email me if you are interested.

Well I have given him enough time to answer and he has not. So if you guys want me to ban him and remove his posting ability let me know.

Mike, I didn't get ripped off by this guy, but I think you should ban him. We don't need any deceiving liars on this forum. Also, would banning him also ban his privledges of posting under different usernames, or just disable him from posting under his current username? Banning only his handle wouldn't do much good.

I think everyone who got ripped by this guy should bombard him with phone calls and angry e-mails

. Also, make sure you report him to the post office for mail fraud.

Just reading about this guy ticks me off... especially since he gave his word to deliver before a given date, and said he had the arclites at a time when he couldn't even have gotten them yet.

I feel as though I have read this before! This guy seems to be getting around... Two almost the same story. Wow!

Mike,
I think that banning is really the only choice. I think it should be a conditional ban in that he cannot post here until he makes good with the three of us (assuming we are the only victims that is) then we can email you with the resolution and all is well and he can be unbanned.

He posted his phone number with both his replies on the forum and the email to each of us so he seems to be a legitimate business person and that is the only card to play in that he should want to protect whatever may be left of his reputation and would want to earn it back honestly.

Assuming he's an honest (at least initially that is) business person who is going through 'whatever' right now, he would be less likely to put the effort into creating a new business and starting over... IMHO.

I'd be interested in whatever Joker354 and Dennis have to say as well but that is my take on it.

Shawn

Shawn,

If Sam Wereb has had some unusual or unfortunate situation I would be willing to listen, but I can't imagine what would be a reasonable excuse. I mean, it appears that he straight up lied to some of us more than once before he disappeared.

I don't even care about the $27 anymore. You can only give someone so many chances and then that person has to be held accountable for their own actions for the sake and benefit of the rest of us.

Like I said before... Sam can come with any explanation he wants and I will listen, but if he runs with my money and I never see him again on BF, then good. I'd say we got rid of him for cheap... maybe one of the best bargains on BF so far. It's not like this place is short of great knife lovers to deal with.

Anyways, thanks for everyones input and concern so far.

Eric.

Don't ban him. Like one of the others said he could get another E-mail address and username and do this kind of thing all over again without people knowing it's him. Let him stay but let EVERYONE on Bladeforums know he is a liar and cheat. This way everyone will know what he did and not have any dealings with him again. Let him stagnate and become a ghost to the community.

You may want to contact your state's Attorney General's Office regarding this matter. Most AG's investigate these types of consumer affairs. Your local District Attorney may also be interested in the matter as well.

emailed him again and no response. I guess Im just out $55. Man I could have bought another Spyderco

If there were some way to make sure he doesn't just register under a different name I would say ban him from the forums. Not just because he burned me, both several others as well. His business practices are obviously less than acceptable.

Once again, a crook can't just register under a different name and go on scamming people -- it'd be a lot more complicated than that; he needs a lot more than a new forum name to establish a new identity that can receive and cash checks.

In this case it seems to be moot ... he doesn't seem to be posting any more and it doesn't look like he's going to have access to the net any more after the postal inspectors find him....

Is there any chance at all, however remote, that he might have made some kind of honest mistake ... confused ArcLites with MagLites ... thought he was taking orders for MagLites which he had in stock ... went on making that mistake for days ... then his computer exploded, his pet ferrets got out of the cage and ate his telephone, a pair of buzzards built a nest in his mailbox and the mailman has a phobia about buzzards, then it snowed and when he went out to shovel his driveway he fell down and hit his head and got amnesia ... and when he recovers from the head injury, gets a new computer, recaptures the ferrets and gets a new phone, rousts out the buzzards, and finishes shoveling his driveway he'll come online and post an explanation of what happened? If so I hope he has a more plausible explanation than that ... and if he finds he can't post because he's banned while he was dealing with those difficulties, he can always email me....

LOL Cougar! That is pretty much what I was expecting to get as an excuse as even that would be 'something'. Getting no response whatsoever is just mind numbing!

Unfortunately, he only supposedly deals the Arclite, OE, and one other brand of filet knife I believe (IF his previous info can be relied upon that is!) so the chances are so remotely slim that it was an honest mistake that I have nearly given up and I thought I was the ultimate 'give em a second chance' guy.

So, was he banned? I just want to be clear on that. I think the idea of letting them fade back and everyone know to protect themselves is good until we consider that there are 30 new registered members since last Sunday! That's a LOT of people to inform and a LOT of potential victims.
"Banning, in this situation, appears to be the only logical conclusion Captain (stroking my pointy ears and raising one eyebrow quizzically!)."

To date I have heard no response from USPS or BBB but all the paperwork is filed and I have the follow up person contact info. Unfortunately, as Dennis posted as well, I've heard nothing from Sam Wereb either. Somewhere around $100 couldn't have gotten him far.

??????,
Shawn

Got an email from Sam Wereb:
