Whacha Been Up To......

I had a knife blade blank from Indy Hammered Knives. I added spalted maple scales and a sheath.

Horsewright Horsewright that’s quite the adventure and wow those are some great looking fish!
My dad was the fisherman in our family and probably why I’m not #Notagreatdad sad but true but that’s old history now.

Did the lady on the boat make out ok? Sounds like a tough situation for her!

And as always really appreciate taking the rest of us along for the ride!

Thanks G2! Yeah she did ok, seemed like. She was met at the dock by her husband and he ran her off to get checked. Even though it was short it was still a great trip. Ya bet my friend!

Lorien Lorien - I think your sheaths are ALWAYS equal to your knives. That you think there is room for improvement is among the reasons why your work is so consistently spectacular. Having said that - I don't like this one. 😵

A fellow contacted me to make a sheath for an older folder he picked up, it's seen some use. He found an image of one of my earlier sheaths and asked to make one similar with the same leather colour, which in that case was the neatsfoot oil treatment. It's been a while since I've done that and my wife expressed concern that I would muck up her oven with 'stuff' I explained that all the oven is being used for is to heat up the leather so it will readily accept the neatsfoot oil, which I also heated up a bit before brushing it onto the leather. There were a couple of range marks that surfaced once the oil was applied but that adds character. The knife does lack a lot of contour that I usually want in a folder so the sheath will have good retention, this one will hold the knife secure but not a pop in like say the Buck 110 folders do, but, it will work fine for this knife.

I got this sheath finished last night. It has a soft deerskin interior, and although it's quite simple, it's some of my best work to date. Always trying to improve!

Beautiful craftmanship Lorien. You know I appreciate the fact that your designs are almost always very lean and as compact as necessary for any given knife. In this case, the belt loop seems proportionately large and wide to me. I am sure you had a practical reason for that. Would you care to enlighten us more…

Thanks!

I was going to go further with this, but I just didn't. No reason, to be honest, other than laziness. I was super happy with how everything else went with this sheath, so I should probably revisit the belt loop. This knife was a battle the whole way through, so let's chalk it up to battle fatigue?
Thanks for explaining your criticism, that's really helpful. Not that "I don't like it" isn't helpful, it's just less so🤣
