Whacha Been Up To......

I join in this thread HUMBLY as I am such a novice but each project seems to get incrementally better. On the same sheath I have OH CRAP  moments and HORRAY🥰 moments. This one was all about wet forming and retention. With Dave's Horsewright Horsewright help - I learned to do the heat treat and it worked BEAUTIFULLY! I have an audible snap fit and it looks pretty good too. DEK1 from @Lorien:thumbsup:

Waiting on a MUMMERT CLIP ( there shipping system is surprisingly slow ) and a removable leather belt loop add on, that will allow it to hang lower on the belt than with the M Clip, for the next phase. Maybe next weekend. But for now...

Very nice 👍

Beautiful craft, beautiful life.

Always coming with the magical lighting too. Was just reading something about how open spaces are calming to our nervous systems due to the clearance of peripheral vision.

Some ancient mechanism in us that scouts for predators. Apparently you can calm yourself just by looking out of the corners of your eyes back and forth for a minute... like a primordial checklist for survival.

Was shooting pics of a new set of bags that Nichole had finished yesterday. Matching travel bag and duffelbag. Made from a charcoal water buffalo with water buffalo strapping and highlights too:

We had bought another bull last Thursday and we'd had him in the corral with a couple of heifers and a steer to kind of get use to the place for a few days before kicking him out. We'd already been weaning the heifers and the steer so just added the bull to the party and then kicked em all out yesterday.

When I picked him up last week I asked the folks at the ranch I was buying him from if he had a name. He's a registered Ultrablack bull and registered bulls often have nicknames. They said "Barney". I said "cool I like it, Barney it is."

Barney is a gentle giant:

But when I was shooting pics of him I was thinking of your statement about open spaces.

As always your work is top notch!!! That charcoal buffalo is awesome and I don't really like anything but brown for a knife sheath, but that would look great.... Nice bags, blades and pants sir!

This has a piece of beaver tail for a reinforcement, although I'm not convinced it's necessary in most cases. It does kind of set it off a bit.

So what's my girls doing in Vegas?

Hanging out in Gilley's?

Well yeah, but they went to see some guy sing:

Not just some guy, that guy!

That guy! Yep Garth Brooks:

Y4kGMHP.jpg

Nichole had seen him years ago, before he was really super famous and it had been her dream, a bucket list deal, to take our daughter Alyssa to see Garth. And all the stars alined in Vegas:

nyjnORn.jpg

His wife, Trisha Yearwood was the plus one too, so they got to hear her sing with Garth. They had a great time!

So Alyssa's grandfather had passed away a few months back. He was an avid marathon runner and had run over 100 marathons. All the big ones, Boston, New York, London, LA all of them. Her sister in law asked Alyssa if she wanted to run in the Rock and Roll half marathon in San Diego, so they decided to do it in memory of her Grandfather. Alyssa started training and the weekend after Garth in Vegas, it was San Diego. She did great and had fun doing it. They call it the Rock And Roll race because throughout the course, in downtown San Diego, every mile they have a band set up and playing. Alyssa bout 20 yds from the finish line:

Its a big deal, 25,000 runners and 100,000 spectators!

Kinda a cool thing but she carried her grandfather's number from the last marathon he ran in, with her, the whole way:

Alyssa works in the ER in one of the major hospitals down the hill. Her work put together a deep sea fishing trip and it was the next weekend. Wasn't till she got there and on the charter boat that she found out she was the only woman going:

No matter she had a great time and although she fishes a lot she'd never been out on the ocean before:

Brought home a big bag of rockfish filets that we turned into fish tacos and man were they good!

emHYx2v.jpg

All her girlfriends were telling her "man you got to do all the things, all at once!" So we're sitting around eating fish tacos and telling fishing stories and David Eugene, Alyssa's husband says he wants to take Big Dave, his dad, and Dave, me (see how we differentiate the Dave's in this outfit), deep sea fishing for Father's Day. So he books us a trip out of Morro Bay for yesterday. Morro Bay is quite a bit north of where Alyssa went out of at the Channel Islands. It was a very short trip as we had a lady angler on board that started having heart problems and we had to make an emergency run back into the dock. The charter boat company gave everybody on board a free pass to go again which was uber cool. Even though we only got to fish for a couple of hours it was pretty darn good. Very deep water though, 380 feet was the depth of the bottom where we were fishing where these guys were hanging out:

mGireJ3.jpg

We were using two jigs on each line and the jigs were baited with small cut pieces of squid. These bad boys came up on my line at the same time! Tell ya what, it was work reeling in these guys at the same time from 380 feet down!

Red Rockfish on the left in the pic above and a Salmon Grouper on the right:

Tested the pics to Alyssa and she said "Holy Cow those are huge!!! I wanna go out of Morro Bay next time!" So if you are ever in the Morro Bay, Central Coast area of California and wanna do some fishing? We were on the Rita G from Virg's Landing. Couldn't of asked for a better crew for sure!

Whacha been up too?

Damn... you do magical things with those handle materials. Excellent sense of taste.

Edit to add - What an amazing trip! Thanks for epic photos and taking us along for the ride :)

380’ of water. Sounds like electric reel time when you want to check your bait.
:)
Yes sir! I'd never heard of an electric reel before but they were talking about them. yep at that depth it was hard to even feel a bite. I got to where I was able to feel the difference when jigging the rod between the one pound weight and how it raised up and fell back down and when I had fish on and did the same thing. I only reeled in one time by mistake when I didn't have fish on. Alyssa and I are talking on when we're going. Got to use that free ticket before Dec.
