Whacha Been Up To......

First one with the arbor press! I punched through most of the layers but didn't force it into the leather to get all the way through. I used a new thicker awl to complete the holes to the back side. Pretty happy with this one!!

Next time I will rubber cement the belt loop on before punching holes and use my old drill press to punch the awl thru the remainder of the leather to keep everything straighter instead of doing it by hand with the awl.

Nice job👍

Thanks! Really slowed down and focused on this one a lot yesterday. The drill press/awl method worked really well following the arbor press diamond prongs going partway thru the 3 layers. After the awl, I flipped the sheath over and used the diamond punches by hand just to tap into the holes to help me see them when sewing the backside. Sewing was MUCH easier as well!

A good system you have figured out. I do similar, but no press.

Even with the awl in the drill press, some holes angled slightly when my spacer piece on the back slipped out. I put a piece of leather along the belt loop to help keep the sheath level when I punched with the diamond prongs and the awl.

There's always. Some little thing that always has to be surmounted for shite to go smoothly...🙄......
Nice.to.figure it out sooner than later..😉

Very nice there Taz! Big improve ment from one to the other that you pictured there.

Some really nice work going inhere from lots of folks.

We've been busy too with lots of projects.

Nichole just finished off this Boot Top purse:. Literally from a pair of old Nocona boots:

She also did this one a short time ago. The construction on this one is completely different. She also had only one boot not a pair to work with:

Heck and why not a whole nether type of bag. Horsewrights first ever Range Bag. Nichole was looking for something smaller. Not your typical arsenal carrying range bag was what she was thinking.

Those bags are fantastic, Dave! Please pass along my words to Nichole. She’s gonna give you a run for your money! Haha!

I believe i am not overstating it when I say you two are awesome.

I've seen some people just use a stitch wheel and an awl to go through all three layers, no idea how they keep the stitching straight on the back side.
That’s how I always did it up until a couple of years ago when a bought a Cowboy 4500. Now that I have that, I wish I had it 25 years ago but I really didn’t have room in my old shop.

The Mrs. Is a southpaw???....
Good eye. No she's not but she does practice some that way. We were at the range just the other day too. She usually does one mag (nine rounds), worth left handed.

Like that very clean.

Smart lady......You don't or won't always have both.hands in some shit u ations..😉

True that!

Been busy too:

This style of sheath is very popular in the western world and lots of makers make one. I'd never really been happy with the fit on a larger knife like a Buck 110. I got a request for one from a fellow BF member and I modified the existing pattern for this sheath to hold a 110 better. Worked out great. The knife snaps into place and has great retention but ya don't need pliers to get it out either.

This one is water buffalo overlay.

These two belong to two different ranchers. One here locally and the other in AZ. Both were needing new sheaths:

Made a new one and tightened up his old one too:

The rancher in AZ sent me several other knives too for sheaths:

Belts too:

A guy still screws up once in a while. I was suppose to be making this holster for a 1911 5" with a rail underneath. Like the stainless one in this pic.

UCNOltz.jpg

But I screwed up and made my stitch line too tight for the rail. But it fit a regular 1911 without the rail perfectly. Built another one for the order and had an extra to put on the website for stock:

I put the extra on the site and it lasted overnight before it sold:

In its new home in WY:

Another holster and belt set. The Carlos border stamp with basket stamp inside is by far, my most popular tooling pattern for a holster.

My middle daughter, born on a Wednesday and as you can see from this old poem about folks born on certain days of the week are classified as;

Monday’s child is fair of face,
Tuesday’s child is full of grace,
Wednesday’s child is full of woe,
Thursdays child has far to go,
Fridays child is loving and giving,
Saturday’s child works hard for his living,
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day

Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay;

She actually has had some tough times through out her life, more so than most, plus she always reminds me that she is the Middle Child ;) in good fun but reminds me nonetheless. ;)

Any way she contacted me that a friend of hers from way back in high school ask if she knew anyone that could make a sheath for him, being a nice girl she offered up my name, she did ask me first for permission and since he was a friend I felt obliged to say ok. Woe is me, even though I was born on a Sunday :)

The fellow contacted me and told me a tale of an old German fixed blade knife, ugh I don't take on fixed blade sheath work but... He continued to tell me it belonged to his grandfather, another stab at my good nature to help...and he asked if I would make a sheath for it. He was in the process of cleaning up the very rusted blade. I asked for some images first, to make sure it was something that I would be able to make to hold the knife securely. He sent the photos, hidden tang stag handle with a very small brass guard, which did extend out past the edge of the blade. So, with all that I said I would help out. We met last Wednesday, he carried the knife unwrapped laying on his center console of his car where it proceeded to shift around and sliced along his forearm while he was driving! It didn't cut very deep, just enough to bleed down his arm. I thought What the Heck? Fortunately I had something to wrap the knife so I would be a little safer on the way home.

Oh...and as if taking this on wasn't enough, when I asked which side he wanted to carry it, of course he said LEFT hand side. Which me being right handed just goes against what I usually make, it just feels backwards to me.
Fixed blade
Left Handed
Ugh lol

So I started on it, making the welt, center piece runs all the way around the knife with two side pieces tapered and glued on either side of that to provide a little extra room to get the knife inserted. Also the top inside portion has a slight arc so the guard is cammed down into the sheath and a small shelf area there to prevent the knife from going too far into the sheath.

The belt loop shown here is folded over, glued down and hand stitched, notice that the stitching goes down and then back up, some people will run the stitching straight across but that creates a perforated section that in time and wear the leather will tear across there. I've repaired several sheaths of other makers and production type sheaths that had that problem so I know it can and does happen. This helps prevent it.

He wanted it dyed dark brown, I opted to use some tiger thread cigar coloured to compliment the sheath.

5 layers makes a thick section to hand sew through, I first marked out the stitching holes with a pricking iron and then used a small drill bit in my dremel to get through all the layers.

The knife snaps into the sheath, not overly tight but enough that it won't fall out, plus having 2/3 rds of the handle inserted in the sheath will help keep it there with just enough exposed to allow drawing the knife out.

It is strange how it feels to insert the knife the Wrong way since it's a left handed sheath ;) but that's just me.

And no, I am not taking fixed blade sheath orders :)
